Causative 把 Sentences with an Agentive Object: 主语 + 把 + 宾语(施事) + 动词 + 其他成分
The HSK 6 pattern 主语 + 把 + 宾语(施事) + 动词 + 其他成分 puts the person performing the action after 把. In 这一大堆衣服把老王洗得腰酸背痛, Lao Wang does the washing, and the clothes form the workload associated with his resulting discomfort. Distinguish this from a person merely experiencing a stimulus.

他的一番话把大家都感动得流下了眼泪。
Contrast: 大家 experience being moved and shed tears. This shows a causative 把 sentence, but crying in the complement does not by itself make 大家 the actor of the main causative verb 感动.
× 那一大碗面把小李吃。
For the intended actor-result pattern, 小李 performs 吃, but the sentence stops without describing the resulting state. Add 得直打嗝 as in the next example.
Corrected example: 那一大碗面把小李吃得直打嗝。

What Does an Agentive Object in a 把 Sentence Mean?
Early in Chinese study, learners are taught that 把 marks a patient object—something a person picks up, moves, or changes, such as eating an apple or closing a door. At the advanced level, listed as Level 6 in the supplied HSK syllabus outline, you encounter a distinct subtype: 主语+把+宾语(施事)+动词+其他成分. Note that syllabus levels reflect the supplied curriculum outline rather than a guarantee about which exam version a specific test center administers.
Focus on the relationship between the noun after 把 and the main verb. In this subtype, that person performs the action: 老王 washes the clothes, or 我们 walk the mountain path. The sentence foregrounds the resulting effect on that actor. A person can be affected and still be the actor, but being affected alone is not enough to establish 施事.
他的一番话把大家都感动得流下了眼泪。
Contrast: 大家 experience being moved and shed tears. This shows a causative 把 sentence, but crying in the complement does not by itself make 大家 the actor of the main causative verb 感动.
The remarks example is a useful contrast. 大家 experience 感动 and perform the crying described in the complement, but the sentence does not mean 大家 perform the causative action 感动 on someone else. Keep the role of each predicate separate. The washing and walking examples below show the actor of the main action more directly.
Sentence Structure and Core Components
- Subject: in the walking and washing examples, this names the path or workload involved. It is not the person performing 走 or 洗.
- Actor after 把: identify who performs the main action. In the examples, 我们 walk and 老王 washes. Being the object of 把 is a grammatical position; 施事 is a semantic role relative to that action.
- Main action: use a compatible verb such as 走, 洗 or 吃 with the intended participant roles. A list of emotional words alone cannot identify this subtype.
- Continuation: the taught frame includes material after the verb, such as 得满头大汗 or 得腰酸背痛, describing the actor’s resulting condition. This is a model for this subtype, not an exhaustive rule for all 把 constructions.
这一段山路把我们走得满头大汗。
我们 perform 走. The path is what they walk, and 满头大汗 describes the resulting state of the walkers.
这一大堆衣服把老王洗得腰酸背痛。
老王 performs 洗; the clothes are what he washes. 腰酸背痛 describes his resulting condition, not a change in the clothes.
Useful Contrast: Disposal vs. Causation
把 can foreground an effect on a participant, while 让 and 使 can also express causation. A 把 sentence does not automatically imply a stronger or completely finished effect. The complement tells you the degree or result. Compare 这些活儿把我干得有点累: 有点 gives a modest degree.
Ask two questions: who performs the main action, and whose state does the complement describe? For 这一大堆衣服把老王洗得腰酸背痛, 老王 washes the clothes, and the aching state is his. Compare 他把衣服洗干净了: 他 does the washing, while 干净 describes the clothes.
突如其来的雷声把小猫吓得躲进了床底下。
Contrast: 小猫 experiences fright and then hides. This is causation with an experiencer and a resulting action; it is not the same role analysis as 老王 performing 洗 in the clothes example.
Structural Limits and Common Learner Mistakes
In this actor-result pattern, the continuation gives the condition reached by the person doing the action. The next unfinished example stops at 吃 and does not supply that information. Complete it with a suitable continuation, keeping the same intended event. Other 把 constructions have their own patterns, so do not extend this one into a universal rule based only on the number of syllables.
× 那一大碗面把小李吃。
For the intended actor-result pattern, 小李 performs 吃, but the sentence stops without describing the resulting state. Add 得直打嗝 as in the next example.
Corrected example: 那一大碗面把小李吃得直打嗝。
那一大碗面把小李吃得直打嗝。
小李 eats the noodles; 直打嗝 describes Xiao Li’s resulting reaction. The correction keeps the same bowl of noodles, actor and action.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the syllabus call the noun after 把 an agent (施事) instead of a patient (受事)?
In this subtype, that noun performs the main action. 老王 is after 把 but is the one washing the clothes. The complement describes his resulting state. By contrast, someone who merely feels frightened is an experiencer of fear; do not call every affected person an actor without checking the verb.
What counts as 'other elements' (其他成分) at the end of this pattern?
In the core examples, it is a continuation such as 得满头大汗, 得腰酸背痛 or 得直打嗝, giving the actor’s resulting condition. The outline’s label 其他成分 names this slot; choose wording that fits the event rather than adding a random result word merely to fill it.
