HSK 6 因 (yīn): Formal Reasons and 因…而…

因 (yīn) introduces a reason in concise formal expressions such as 因病, 因公 and 因资金不足而暂停. Compare its style and pairings with 因为 and 由于. 而 can connect the reason to a result; 故 in 因…之故 is a noun meaning “reason,” not a particle that every 因 phrase requires.

因 reason noun phrase action or state predicate
Example sentence

今日航班因暴雪全部取消。

Jīnrì hángbān yīn bàoxuě quánbù qǔxiāo.

Today's flights are all canceled due to the heavy snowstorm.

Correct. Used in a public announcement style where 因 directly precedes a disyllabic noun (暴雪).

Core Function and Register of 因

In the supplied HSK 6 grammar outline, 因 (yīn) is classified as a preposition (介词, jiècí) used to introduce a purpose or cause (引出目的、原因). While learners acquire 因为 (yīnwèi) early on to state reasons, advanced written Chinese strongly favors economy and rhythmic balance. In official announcements, legal writing, journalism, and formal correspondence, writers routinely use the single character 因 to compress causal phrases.

The outline groups this item under purpose and cause. For 因, begin with the reason or ground for an action. 因病请假 states illness as the reason for leave; it does not mean taking leave in order to become ill. 因公出差 means travelling on work or official business, including company business. It need not refer to government service.

Correct. Used in a public announcement style where 因 directly precedes a disyllabic noun (暴雪).

王经理下周因公出差,暂不接待访客。

Wáng jīnglǐ xià zhōu yīn gōng chūchāi, zàn bù jiēdài fǎngkè.

Manager Wang will be away on business next week and will temporarily not receive visitors.

因公 means on work or official business. It can describe company business as well as public service; the sentence does not identify the manager as a government official.

Sentence Structures and Common Frames

因 precedes a reason expression, which may be a noun phrase or clause. It can follow the subject, as in 航班因暴雪取消, or introduce a reason before the main clause. The following patterns are useful models; a two- or four-syllable length is not a grammatical requirement.

因 reason noun phrase action or state predicate

Learn compact pairings such as 因病, 因公, 因私 and 因故. 因故 leaves the reason unspecified; it does not say that the reason was unforeseen. 而 can link a reason to the following result, as in 因资金不足而暂停施工, but reason length alone does not make 而 compulsory.

subject 因 reason phrase or clause 而 result predicate

这项工程因资金不足而暂停施工。

Zhè xiàng gōngchéng yīn zījīn bùzú ér zàntíng shīgōng.

This project has temporarily halted construction due to insufficient funds.

Correct. Demonstrates the classic formal 因...而... pattern linking a four-character causal phrase to the resulting action.

因…之故 is a literary, heavier way to frame a reason, as in the next example. A concise version is 他因身体不适,未能出席昨晚的颁奖典礼. Both keep the same cause and outcome; adding 之故 does not make the causal claim more certain or more correct.

因 formal reason phrase (之)故

他因身体不适之故,未能出席昨晚的颁奖典礼。

Tā yīn shēntǐ bùshì zhī gù, wèinéng chūxí zuówǎn de bānjiǎng diǎnlǐ.

On account of physical indisposition, he was unable to attend last night's awards ceremony.

Correct. Uses the highly formal 因...之故 frame to bracket the cause before the main clause.

Contrasting 因 with 因为 and 由于

To use 因 naturally at an advanced level, you must distinguish its register and syntactic limits from its close synonyms 因为 (yīnwèi) and 由于 (yóuyú).

  • Register: 因 often sounds more compressed or formal than 因为. 由于 is also common in formal explanation. Choose by the complete phrase and intended style, not a fixed syllable count or a ban on 了 after the reason verb.
  • Postposed explanation: 是因为 is a useful ordinary pattern, as in 他没来,是因为有事. Formal writing can also use 是因, for example 他未能出席,是因另有安排. 因 is therefore not categorically banned after 是; keep the intended reason and style clear.
  • Fixed expressions versus expanded phrases: 因病 and 因公 are compact units. Expanding the wording can still be grammatical, as in 因为生病而请假 or 因为有公务要处理而出差. You may need to expand the whole phrase; losing a fixed two-character form is not the same as making a sentence ungrammatical.

由于各方意见分歧较大,会议未能达成最终协议。

Yóuyú gè fāng yìjiàn fēnqí jiào dà, huìyì wèinéng dáchéng zuìzhōng xiéyì.

Because there were significant differences of opinion among the parties, the meeting failed to reach a final agreement.

Correct. Shows how 由于 naturally introduces a longer, full subject-predicate causal clause at the beginning of a formal sentence.

Conversational and Formal Explanations

The next pair describes the same missed breakfast. 因 makes the reason sound compressed; 因为 is the ordinary conversational choice. Neither the everyday subject matter nor 了 in 起晚了 alone establishes a grammar error. Distinguish a style recommendation from a sentence that cannot express the intended meaning.

我今天早上因起晚了,没吃早饭。

Wǒ jīntiān zǎoshang yīn qǐ wǎn le, méi chī zǎofàn.

I didn't eat breakfast this morning because I got up late.

因 gives this ordinary situation a more compressed, formal tone. The presence of 了 in 起晚了 does not make the sentence ungrammatical. For neutral everyday conversation, compare the version with 因为.

我今天早上因为起晚了,没吃早饭。

Wǒ jīntiān zǎoshang yīnwèi qǐ wǎn le, méi chī zǎofàn.

Because I woke up late this morning, I didn't eat breakfast.

因为 is a neutral conversational choice here. It keeps the same causal relationship between getting up late and not eating breakfast.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the syllabus say 因 introduces both purpose and cause?

The outline heading groups purpose and cause; not every marker under it expresses every meaning equally. 因公出差 gives the work-related ground for a trip, and 因病请假 gives illness as the reason for leave. For a forward-looking goal such as “in order to learn,” use 为了学习; do not replace 为了 with 因 simply because both relate to motivation.

Is the preposition 因 the same as 因此 (yīncǐ)?

No. Prepositional 因 introduces the cause ('because of...'). 因此 literally means 'because of this' and functions as a conjunction introducing the result ('therefore / as a result').
