HSK 6 Grammar: Expressing Exclusion with the Preposition 除 (chú)
Formal 除 (chú) can set aside an exception to a general statement. Practise the standard 除…外 / 之外 / 以外 frame and read the whole main clause to distinguish exclusion from addition. 都, 均, 还 and 也 can be clues, but no single adverb decides the meaning in every sentence.

除周经理之外,其他部门负责人全都按时出席了会议。
Uses 除……之外 paired with 其他 (other) and 全都 (all) to exclude one person from the group.
× 除周日,这家社区诊所每天都开门。
Incorrect: monosyllabic 除 cannot be used as a bare preposition before a comma without a closing word like 外, 之外, or 以外. Replace with the corrected form in “除周日外,这家社区诊所每天都开门。”.
Corrected example: 除周日外,这家社区诊所每天都开门。

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope
In the HSK 6 grammar outline (2025-11 edition with a 2026-07 implementation label), 除 (chú) is listed under prepositions (介词, jiècí) that express exclusion (表示排除, biǎoshì páichú). Please note that syllabus levels reflect the supplied curriculum outline rather than a guarantee of which test version is administered at a specific examination center.
In its exclusion use, 除 means “except for” or “apart from.” It sets aside a person, group, time or situation while the main clause describes the remaining scope. Pay attention to what is excluded: in the meeting example, the relevant statement is attendance on time, not simply attendance at all. 除 is more formal than the flexible conversational and written form 除了.
Core Sentence Structures
To express exclusion clearly, 除 works in two parts. First, the prepositional phrase opens with 除 and closes with a boundary word: 之外 (zhīwài), 以外 (yǐwài), or the concise single-character 外 (wài). Second, the main clause states the general rule for the remaining group, typically using a universal adverb such as 都 (dōu), 全 (quán), or the formal 均 (jūn, all) to show that everything else shares the same status.

Uses 除……之外 paired with 其他 (other) and 全都 (all) to exclude one person from the group.
In regulations, public signs, and formal summaries, writers frequently pair 除 with the monosyllabic 外 (wài). In this tighter frame, the main clause may use 均 (jūn) or an overarching statement of normality without needing colloquial markers.

Formal written style using 除……外 and the literary universal adverb 均 (all).
除个别航班因大雾延误以外,今天机场的整体运行十分正常。
Shows that the excluded element between 除 and 以外 can be a full subject-predicate clause.
Important Contrasts: Exclusion vs. Addition and 除 vs. 除了
The same 除…外 frame can support exclusion or addition. Interpret the whole sentence: identify the item set aside, the remaining group and what the main clause says about them. Main-clause adverbs help, but an automatic one-word test is insufficient.
- Exclusion: 都, 全, 均 and 其余 often help describe the remaining group. The exception may contain several people or things, not necessarily one item. A universal adverb is not compulsory: 除周日外,其余时间可办理 states the rule for the other times.
- Addition: 还, 也 or 又 can introduce something further, as in 除承担教学任务外,他还指导年轻教师. They are useful clues, not a reason to ignore other words: 也 and 都 can occur together. Check which activities or people the sentence includes and what it asserts about them.
- Register and rhythm (除 vs. 除了): 除了 is flexible across everyday speech and writing, and it can appear before a comma without 外 or 以外. Monosyllabic 除 is decidedly formal and requires a closing localizer (外, 之外, or 以外) to complete the prepositional frame.
除承担日常教学任务外,他还负责指导年轻教师。
Contrast example: grammatical, but expresses addition rather than exclusion because the main clause uses 还 (also).
除了周日,这家社区诊所每天都开门。
With the two-syllable preposition 除了, omitting 外 or 以外 before the comma is natural.
Structural Limits and Common Learner Mistakes
For this standard formal construction, learn 除 together with 外, 之外 or 以外. If you shorten 除了周日 to 除周日 in the next example, add 外 to complete the taught frame: 除周日外. The correction preserves the same clinic and weekly schedule.
除周日外,这家社区诊所每天都开门。
Correct replacement for “除周日,这家社区诊所每天都开门。”: adding 外 completes the required 除……外 frame.
Frequently asked questions
Can I always replace 除了 with 除 to make my writing sound more formal?
Only if the closing particle 外, 之外, or 以外 is present. If a sentence uses bare 除了 without a closing particle, dropping 了 makes the sentence ungrammatical until you add 外, 之外, or 以外 at the end of the prepositional phrase.
Is there a difference between 外, 之外, and 以外 when paired with 除?
All three close the exclusion phrase grammatically. Single-character 外 is the most compact and formal, especially after longer phrases; 之外 and 以外 have a two-syllable rhythm and work well after both short nouns and full clauses.
How do I know whether 除……外 means 'except for' or 'in addition to'?
Read the whole main clause. 都, 全 or 均 often accompany a statement about the remaining group; 还, 也 or 又 often introduce an additional fact. These words can co-occur, so check the group, predicate and scope as well. Exclusion can also be expressed without a universal adverb.
