Using 为(了)……起见 to State a Purpose

The pattern 为(了)……起见,…… places a reasoned purpose before the action taken for it. Learn its structure, register, punctuation, and contrast with a plain 为 / 为了 phrase.

Meaning and use

This pattern means “for the sake of,” “in the interest of,” or “for the purpose of.” The opening phrase names the aim or consideration; the clause after the comma states an action taken with that aim in view. The purpose often concerns coordination, protection, clarity, or a later process.

The outline lists this construction under purpose clauses at levels 7–9. That identifies the teaching scope here; it does not establish which version is currently administered at any test centre.

Formation and punctuation

为(了) purpose phrase 起见, main clause

Place 为 or 为了 before the purpose phrase, put 起见 at its end, then use a comma before the main clause. The optional 了 belongs in 为了; it does not replace 起见. The purpose phrase can be a verb phrase or a longer phrase naming an intended outcome. Keep the main clause complete.

  • 为 + purpose + 起见, + main clause
  • 为了 + purpose + 起见, + main clause
  • The parenthesized 了 in the outline marks the choice between 为 and 为了; the construction still ends the purpose phrase with 起见.

Examples in context

For the sake of protecting the interviewees’ privacy, the report did not publish information that could identify individuals.

为避免重复劳动起见,两个小组先交换了各自的资料目录。

为了便于后续讨论起见,主持人把争议最大的三项问题单独列了出来。

To facilitate the subsequent discussion, the chair set out the three most contentious issues separately.

A useful contrast

A plain 为 / 为了 phrase can also introduce a purpose, but it does not use the specific frame ending in 起见. Compare the full pattern with an otherwise similar sentence that omits 起见. The latter may still be grammatical and convey a purpose; it is not an incorrect version of the target construction. Use 起见 when you want the more explicitly framed, considered tone.

A grammatical plain purpose sentence without 起见. It conveys the same protective aim in a shorter form; compare its wording with the more explicitly framed example using 起见.

Frequently asked questions

Where does 起见 go?

It closes the purpose phrase, immediately before the comma and the main clause.

Can I omit 了?

Yes. The outline gives 为(了), so either 为 or 为了 can introduce the purpose; 起见 remains part of the construction.

Does the construction always sound formal?

It tends to sound deliberate and somewhat formal, though speakers may use it in ordinary conversation when they want to emphasize the consideration behind a decision.
