Using 连……都……,更不用说……了 to Build a Stronger Point
连 A 都 P,更不用说 B 了 makes the conclusion about B follow all the more from an emphatic statement about A. With failure, B may be a harder task; with success, B may be an easier or more expected case. Learn the scale rather than assuming that the second case is always less attainable.

Meaning: a surprising case, then a stronger one
The first part makes an emphatic statement about A with 连……都…… . 更不用说 B 了 then invites the same relevant conclusion about B all the more. A negative statement may move from failing at an easier task to the implausibility of a harder task. A positive ability statement can move from an unlikely person succeeding to a more expected person succeeding. The direction depends on the predicate and context, not on a fixed rule that B is harder. The outline lists this as a progressive relation at levels 7–9, which establishes lesson scope rather than current test-centre versions.
- Identify why A is surprising under the stated predicate. A need not be the easier or physically smaller case.
- 都 emphasizes that even the focused item is included in the statement. It does not mean “all” in every sentence; the focused item is identified by its place after 连.
- The second part normally inherits the relevant predicate. Infer what is asserted about B instead of reading B as an unrelated new event.
- Both negative and positive inferences are possible. Check the ordering of likelihood or difficulty in the particular context.

连刚学中文的游客都能看懂这个指示牌,更不用说本地居民了。
A positive ability inference: if even beginning learners can understand it, local residents are presented as more likely to manage it, not as facing a harder task.
Formation and clause order
A useful working frame is 连 + focused element + 都 + statement, followed by 更不用说 + stronger extension + 了. The focused element can be a noun phrase, such as a person or a piece of information, or an action or circumstance made prominent by the sentence. Put the predicate after 都 in the first clause. The second part should continue the same comparison or scale; it is not a free-standing topic that happens to come after the first clause.
- Choose a first case that is meaningful as a baseline in the context, then choose an extension that is clearly stronger on the same relevant scale.
- With inability, failure at a modest task supports failure at a harder one. With ability, success by a less expected person can support success by a more expected person. Keep the predicate and context consistent.
- 了 closes the extension in this pattern. The pattern does not by itself prove that the action in the 更不用说 clause happened.
- Use the paired clauses for a statement or argument. This lesson’s pattern is not simply two balanced alternatives or a neutral list.

Discussing solutions is a further step beyond answering the core question.
When the pattern fits
Use it when the first statement gives a convincing basis for the extension. Unverified raw data make reliable conclusions premature. A sign understood even by beginning learners is presented as accessible to local residents too. The inference may be critical, positive or simply emphatic; it need not describe two failed actions or a second event that actually occurred.
连打着伞步行都淋湿了,更不用说在雨里骑车了。
Walking under an umbrella still resulted in getting wet. The extension suggests that cycling would expose the rider at least as much; it does not report an actual cycling trip.
A useful contrast and common pitfalls
A sentence can also use 更不用说 to add an example or point without the paired 连……都…… frame. That is a broader construction and does not automatically express the same two-step progression. Here, 连 and 都 make the first case explicitly surprising or inclusive, while 更不用说 marks the next step on the scale. Do not treat the pattern as a rule that every second clause is impossible: it may be a reasonable inference, a rhetorical extension, or an emphatic comparison. What matters is the relation between the two cases in context.
- Avoid using two clauses that have no shared scale. A sudden topic change makes 更不用说 sound unmotivated.
- Do not assume 都 always means every member of a group. In this construction, it emphasizes inclusion of the focused case.
- Do not read the extension as a question just because it is not directly asserted. The full pattern commonly makes a statement; question force, if intended, must come from the surrounding sentence and context.
- Do not swap the pattern for a neighboring progression formula merely because an English translation also uses “let alone.” Different Chinese patterns can have different syntax and emphasis.
Frequently asked questions
Must the first clause always be negative?
No. Negative first clauses are common when the speaker describes failure or lack of ability, but a positive or descriptive first clause can also work if the second case is a coherent stronger point. The scale and context matter more than a fixed polarity rule.
Does the 更不用说 clause say that the second event happened?
Not necessarily. It is often an inferred extension or comparison, not a report of an event. Read it with the surrounding context.
Can I use this pattern in a question?
The pattern is naturally used to make a statement or argument. A larger sentence may be a question, but the interrogative force comes from that sentence and its context; the pattern itself does not turn into a question.
