Using 不说,还 to Add a Further Consideration

The pattern 不说,还… presents one relevant fact and then adds another, often giving the second fact greater weight in the context. Learn the clause order, the role of 还, and how to keep the two parts logically connected.

first clause 不说,( Second-clause subject, if stated )还 Further predicate or action
Example sentence

这项研究需要长期跟踪参与者不说,还要处理大量数据。

Zhè xiàng yánjiū xūyào chángqī gēnzōng cānyùzhě bù shuō, hái yào chǔlǐ dàliàng shùjù.

This study requires long-term participant tracking, and on top of that, it also involves processing a large amount of data.

Correct. The second clause adds another substantial task related to the study.

Meaning and use

The outline places this pattern under additive or progressive compound sentences. In context, the first clause establishes a relevant fact; 不说 marks it as one point being set aside or taken as given, and 还 introduces a further fact. The second clause often sounds like an additional burden, requirement, ability, or quality, though its exact emphasis depends on context. The outline identifies the pattern and level; these explanations and examples are original teaching material. [hsk-7-9-g115]

Use it when the two clauses concern the same person, task, situation, or evaluation and the second point meaningfully extends the first. It is common in statements. A question is possible when the speaker is genuinely asking whether the additional point also applies, but the pattern itself does not make a sentence a question; context and question wording do that.

Form and punctuation

first clause 不说,( Second-clause subject, if stated )还 Further predicate or action

Place the first fact before 不说, then add the next point. 不说 stays attached to that first part; the usual written pause is after it, as in 需要长期跟踪参与者不说,还要处理大量数据. If the second clause has its own subject, place it before 还: 路不好走不说,天气还特别冷. A shared subject can be omitted when clear. The second predicate may state an ability, requirement, quality or further consequence.

A useful contrast

Simple addition with 还 can list another fact without the same framing effect. 不说 signals that the first fact is already worth mentioning, while the second adds another relevant point. Compare the intended relationship rather than translating each word mechanically. Use 不说,还 when the first clause is being treated as one consideration and the second extends it; use a plain 还 when you simply want to state that another fact is also true.

这项研究需要长期跟踪参与者,还要处理大量数据。

Zhè xiàng yánjiū xūyào chángqī gēnzōng cānyùzhě, hái yào chǔlǐ dàliàng shùjù.

This study requires long-term participant tracking, and on top of that, it also involves processing a large amount of data.

A grammatical comparison sentence with plain 还. It adds another task without explicitly setting aside the first through 不说; it is not a learner error.

Frequently asked questions

Can 不说 be translated literally as “without saying”?

Usually that translation is misleading here. Treat 不说,还 as a linking pattern: the first clause gives one consideration and the second adds another. Choose natural English wording such as “and also” or “on top of that” based on context.

Does this pattern only occur in statements?

Statements are the most straightforward teaching use. A question can use the pattern when the speaker asks whether the additional point also holds; the interrogative force comes from the sentence and context, not from 不说,还 alone.
