Multi-layer Progressive Sentences in Chinese

Multi-layer progressive sentences have an outer “not only … but also …” relationship and an inner relationship within at least one side. Learn to map causes, conditions or concessions inside the added point, and distinguish structural layers from a simple rise in emphasis.

不但 Outer first proposition ,而且因为 Inner reason proposition , Inner result proposition 。

这项研究不但补充了此前被忽略的数据,而且由于分析方法有所改进,研究团队还修正了学界对事件起因的判断。

Zhè xiàng yánjiū bùdàn bǔchōng le cǐqián bèi hūlüè de shùjù, érqiě yóuyú fēnxī fāngfǎ yǒu suǒ gǎijìn, yánjiū tuánduì hái xiūzhèng le xuéjiè duì shìjiàn qǐyīn de pànduàn.

This study not only added previously overlooked data; improved analytical methods also enabled the research team to revise the scholarly assessment of the event’s cause.

Outer progression: adding evidence versus revising an assessment. Inside the added point, improved methods explain the revision. The sentence has three clauses and two levels.

How the progression works

A progressive relation adds a point beyond an earlier one in emphasis, scope or consequence. A multi-layer sentence needs more: at least three clauses and two structural levels. First identify the outer progression, then locate a cause, condition, concession or other relation inside a clause group. Adding 甚至 to a third point does not by itself prove this hierarchy.

不但 Outer first proposition ,而且因为 Inner reason proposition , Inner result proposition 。

In this model, 不但 introduces the first proposition, while 而且 introduces the larger added group. Inside that group, 因为 links a reason to its result. The research example uses 由于 in that inner role. A two-clause 不但……而且…… sentence can be complete and natural, but remains one level. 甚至 can add striking emphasis when context warrants it; it is not a compulsory multi-layer marker.

Build balanced clauses

Decide what the outer progression connects before choosing its markers. In 不但A,而且[因为B,C], the second side is a whole causal group, not just B. The first and second sides need not have identical length or internal shape. What matters is a clear added point and a separate relationship within a larger side.

  • Separate clauses from predicate phrases: several verbs alone do not guarantee a multi-layer compound sentence.
  • Keep the subject consistent when the meaning is clear; repeat it when a change of subject could confuse the reader.
  • Use punctuation to separate longer clauses, especially when they contain their own modifiers or embedded phrases.
  • The markers can introduce positive or negative content. The progression comes from the relation and emphasis between points, not from whether the facts are favorable.

新规不但要求平台公开推荐依据,而且如果申诉未在规定期限内得到处理,平台还须说明原因。

Xīn guī bùdàn yāoqiú píngtái gōngkāi tuījiàn yījù, érqiě rúguǒ shēnsù wèi zài guīdìng qīxiàn nèi dédào chǔlǐ, píngtái hái xū shuōmíng yuányīn.

The new rules not only require platforms to disclose the basis for recommendations; they also require platforms to explain why an appeal has not been handled within the specified period, if that happens.

Outer addition: disclosure plus a further obligation. The inner if clause specifies when an explanation is required. This is a handling deadline, not a deadline for lodging an appeal; the rule is a fictional teaching example.

The research example has an outer progression from new evidence to a revised assessment, with a cause inside the latter. The fictional rule example has an outer addition of obligations, with an if–result relation inside the second obligation. In the latter, the deadline concerns processing an appeal, not submitting one. These internal relations make the layers visible without requiring a third stage headed by 甚至.

Read the steps in context

团队不但完成了原定的田野调查,而且整理出一套可复核的访谈档案,甚至为后续研究建立了共享数据库。

Tuánduì bùdàn wánchéng le yuándìng de tiányě diàochá, érqiě zhěnglǐ chū yí tào kě fùhé de fǎngtán dàng'àn, shènzhì wèi hòuxù yánjiū jiànlì le gòngxiǎng shùjùkù.

The team not only completed the planned fieldwork but also organized a set of verifiable interview records, and it even established a shared database for future research.

Comparison: three related accomplishments rise in scope and emphasis. They are grammatical, but the three markers alone do not show which clauses form a structural sub-group; map that grouping before calling the sentence multi-layer.

他不但没有回避质疑,而且即使有人反对公开记录,他也坚持让公众查阅原始资料。

Tā bùdàn méiyǒu huíbì zhìyí, érqiě jíshǐ yǒu rén fǎnduì gōngkāi jìlù, tā yě jiānchí ràng gōngzhòng cháyuè yuánshǐ zīliào.

He not only did not evade the questions raised; even if someone objected to releasing the records, he would still insist on letting the public consult the original material.

Outer progression: not avoiding questions plus a further commitment to transparency. Inside that commitment, 即使……也…… says that objections would not change his stance.

这次合作不但扩大了双方的研究范围,而且让原本分散的资料得以互相验证。

Zhè cì hézuò bùdàn kuòdà le shuāngfāng de yánjiū fànwéi, érqiě ràng yuánběn fēnsàn de zīliào déyǐ hùxiāng yànzhèng.

This collaboration not only expanded the research scope of both sides but also enabled previously scattered materials to be checked against one another.

Comparison: a complete two-clause progression, with no need for 甚至. It has one relation level and does not by itself illustrate 多重递进复句.

The response example combines outer progression with an inner hypothetical concession. The team example is a comparison of three increasingly substantial accomplishments; the cooperation example is a complete two-clause progression. Neither the number of steps nor the force of 甚至 alone establishes a second structural level. Correct simpler patterns remain useful comparisons and should not be labeled errors.

Progression, addition, and emphasis

Distinguish three questions: are the ideas merely parallel, does the speaker present one as a further point, and is there a relationship inside one of the groups? The second question identifies progression; the third identifies another structural level. A short two-clause progression can be clearer than a long sentence when the message needs no inner relationship.

These examples are statements. The same progressive relation can be embedded in a question when the speaker asks about the whole claim, but the markers alone do not turn a sentence into a question. Put the question form where the intended question belongs and use appropriate punctuation. For instance, a speaker might ask whether a report not only identified a gap but also proposed a remedy; the question seeks confirmation of the sequence rather than changing the meaning of 不但 or 而且. Use this only when the context calls for a real question, not as a default template.

A practical editing check

Check the outer and inner relationships separately. First bracket what 不但 and 而且 connect. Then explain the relation inside the larger group without reusing the outer label automatically. Finally check whether the added point fits the speaker’s intended emphasis. If there is only one relationship level, use the simpler sentence naturally without calling it multi-layer.

  • Do not use 甚至 for a final point that is merely another equal item; it usually signals a notable extension or culmination.
  • Do not force three stages when the message has only two. 不但……而且…… can express a clear two-step progression.
  • Do not assume that a marker has only one possible position in every sentence. Place markers so their scope over the intended clause is clear.
  • Do not call a sentence incorrect just because it communicates a different degree of emphasis. Judge it against the meaning and context the speaker intends.

Frequently asked questions

Must every clause have the same subject?

No. A subject may change when the meaning remains clear. Repeat it when the reader might otherwise attach an action to the wrong person or group.

Does 甚至 always mean “even”?

In this progressive pattern, 甚至 commonly introduces a particularly notable or unexpected final step and can often be translated as “even.” The natural English wording depends on the sentence.

Can a progressive sentence have only two clauses?

Yes, a progressive sentence can have two clauses, but then it has only one relation level. 多重递进复句 requires an inner clause relationship as well as the outer progression; it is not simply a longer name for 不但……而且…….
