HSK 7-9 · Fixed patterns

Emphatic Verb Repetition: X都不/没X

In this fixed pattern, repeat a verb or verbal expression around 都不 or 都没: 看都不看, 想都没想. The first occurrence puts the action in focus; the second denies it emphatically. This is different from the non-repeated quantity pattern 一句话都没说.

Repeated verb or verbal expression 都不/没 Repeated verb or verbal expression
Example sentence

他离开办公室时,跟同事说都没说一声。

Tā líkāi bàngōngshì shí, gēn tóngshì shuō dōu méi shuō yì shēng.

When he left the office, he did not even let his coworkers know.

说 occurs before 都 and again after 没. 一声 follows the second occurrence; it is not the repeated X.

The frame and its force

The outline’s X都不/没X is a repeated-predicate format. In 看都不看, both X positions are 看; in 想都没想, both are 想. The first occurrence names the action under discussion and the second denies it with 不 or 没. 都 highlights that even this action is not undertaken. The first verb is not an assertion that the action actually happened.

Choosing 不 or 没

不 often presents a refusal, habit or non-action: 看都不看. It is not a present-tense ending; a past narrative can also describe someone’s refusal with 不. Choose it for the intended kind of denial, not merely because the event is “now”.

没 denies occurrence or realization in the relevant situation: 想都没想. It does not by itself tell us why the action did not happen; refusal, lack of opportunity and an unconsidered response are different possible contexts. 不 and 没 are not simply stronger and weaker versions of the same meaning.

  • Use a familiar verbal expression: 看都不看, 想都没想, 说都没说.
  • Put 都 before 不 or 没 and repeat the core predicate after the negative.
  • Objects and short complements can follow the second verb, as in 看都不看我一眼.

What can fill X

In these examples, X is the repeated verbal core: 说, 看, 问, 想 or 坐. Start with a short familiar verb or verbal expression that fits the sentence. 连 may appear before the first occurrence to reinforce “even”, as in 连看都不看, but it is not obligatory. Do not substitute a quantity phrase for the first verb and call it the same repeated pattern.

她连看都不看我一眼。

Tā lián kàn dōu bú kàn wǒ yì yǎn.

She would not even look at me.

看 is repeated on both sides of 都不. 连 adds an explicit “even” framing, while 我一眼 follows the second 看. 不 can convey refusal or a habitual lack of response in the relevant context.

这么重要的决定,你问都不问一句?

Zhème zhòngyào de juédìng, nǐ wèn dōu bú wèn yí jù?

This is such an important decision, and you are not even going to ask about it?

The question challenges the failure to ask. 不 is inside the repeated 问都不问 frame; intonation and context supply the challenge.

他想都没想,就接受了这个邀请。

Tā xiǎng dōu méi xiǎng, jiù jiēshòu le zhège yāoqǐng.

He accepted the invitation without even thinking about it.

想 is repeated around 都没. The expression portrays an unconsidered response; it can be an exaggeration rather than a measurable claim of zero mental activity.

她忙着照顾病人,整晚连坐都没坐一下。

Tā mángzhe zhàogù bìngrén, zhěng wǎn lián zuò dōu méi zuò yíxià.

She was busy looking after patients all night and did not even sit down for a moment.

坐 is the repeated verb. 整晚 gives the time context and 一下 adds a brief extent after the second 坐; neither replaces the repeated predicate.

When to use it and what it adds

Use the repetition to stress an absent action, often against an expectation that someone should at least do it. The tone may be reproachful, surprised, regretful or simply emphatic. It is common in conversation and expressive writing; the context determines whether it sounds like a complaint.

Compare 他没看这封信 with 他看都没看这封信. Both deny reading the letter; the repeated form foregrounds “not even looking at it”. It may imply that the omission was striking, but does not prove the person’s motive. In this use 都 is emphatic, not a quantifier saying “all people”.

  • Choose the action you want to foreground.
  • Repeat its verbal core around 都不 or 都没.
  • Choose 不 or 没 for the intended negation; keep any object or complement in a natural position.
  • Check the situation: what expectation makes “not even doing it” noteworthy?

Frequently asked questions

Why does X appear twice?

The first occurrence puts the action in focus; it does not assert the action happened. The second says it is not or was not done, with 都 adding “even”. In 看都不看我一眼, both occurrences are 看, while 我一眼 follows the second one.

Can I choose 不 or 没 freely?

No. 都 provides emphasis, but 不 and 没 still reflect the intended kind of negation. Use 不 for attitudes, preferences, habits, or refusal; use 没 to deny an action, event, or result that did not happen.

Is this pattern only conversational?

No. It is natural in conversation and can appear in writing. Because it is emphatic, use it selectively in formal or neutral factual prose.
