HSK 7-9 Clause and Sentence Conjunctions: 鉴于, 况且, 免得, 若, 倘若, and 以防

At the advanced level, connecting clauses requires precise register and logical direction. This guide covers six HSK 7-9 conjunctions grouped by function: causal and additive reasoning (鉴于, 况且), preventive purpose (免得, 以防), and formal conditionals (若, 倘若).

鉴于 clause presenting the reason or situation , clause stating a decision or conclusion
Example sentence

鉴于近期天气变化剧烈,组委会决定推迟比赛。

Jiànyú jìnqī tiānqì biànhuà jùliè, zǔwěihuì juédìng tuīchí bǐsài.

In view of the drastic weather changes recently, the organizing committee decided to postpone the competition.

鉴于 introduces the weather situation as the reason for the committee’s decision. Here it is followed by a full clause.

A common mistake

× 多带一件厚外套吧,免得晚上不感冒。

Duō dài yī jiàn hòu wàitào ba, miǎnde wǎnshang bù gǎnmào.

Intended: Bring an extra thick coat so you do not catch a cold at night.

The intended unwanted event is catching a cold. Adding 不 before 感冒 after 免得 instead makes “not catching a cold” the event to avoid. Remove that 不, as in the next example.

Corrected example: 多带一件厚外套吧,免得晚上感冒。

Overview of Advanced Clause Connectors

In the HSK 7-9 syllabus outline, the conjunctions 鉴于 (sense 2), 况且, 免得, 若, 倘若, and 以防 are categorized together as connectors that link clauses or entire sentences. While intermediate learners can already express cause, purpose, and condition using everyday words, advanced proficiency requires selecting connectors that match the formality of official notices, academic arguments, or nuanced spoken persuasion.

A useful grouping is: a stated basis or additional reason (鉴于, 况且), a precaution against an unwanted event or its consequences (免得, 以防), and a hypothetical condition (若, 倘若). Check the relationship between the clauses before choosing the connector.

Causal Basis and Additive Reasoning: 鉴于 and 况且

The source distinguishes the conjunction use of 鉴于 with a sense-2 marker. In this lesson, 鉴于 introduces a reason or situation as the basis for a decision or conclusion. With a noun phrase it is treated as a preposition in the outline; with a clause it is treated as a conjunction. The reason need not be brief, directly observable, or already known to every reader.

鉴于 clause presenting the reason or situation , clause stating a decision or conclusion

况且 adds a further reason supporting the same conclusion. “Besides” and “moreover” are useful English equivalents. The added reason can be expressed in a clause with an understood subject. 还 or 也 often accompanies it but is not required; 况且 does not simply join two nouns as 和 does.

first reason clause ,况且 additional supporting reason clause

这趟列车票价不贵,况且时间也很合适,我们就坐这趟吧。

Zhè tàng lièchē piàojià bù guì, kuàngqiě shíjiān yě hěn héshì, wǒmen jiù zuò zhè tàng ba.

The ticket price for this train isn't expensive, and besides, the timing is very suitable, so let's take this one.

Uses 况且 paired with 也 to introduce a secondary supporting reason.

Preventive Purpose Connectors: 免得 and 以防

免得 usually follows an action and introduces an unwanted outcome to avoid. 以防 introduces a precaution against something that may happen; the action may reduce the harm rather than stop the event itself. For example, a backup does not stop a system crash but protects against its consequences. 以防万一 can also come first: 以防万一,请再备份一份.

precautionary action clause ,免得 / 以防 unwanted event to avoid or prepare for

免得 is common in conversation and also occurs in writing. It can introduce a clause or a shorter predicate phrase, as in 免得麻烦. 以防 is common in written precautions and also in speech. In 以防万一 and 以防不测, 万一 and 不测 are the compact expressions following 以防; they are not themselves four-character clauses.

你把地址写清楚,免得快递员找不到地方。

Nǐ bǎ dìzhǐ xiě qīngchu, miǎnde kuàidìyuán zhǎobudào dìfang.

Write the address clearly so the courier can find the place.

Natural conversational use of 免得; here 找不到 ('cannot find') is the unwanted problem itself.

请提前备份重要数据,以防系统突然崩溃。

Qǐng tíqián bèifèn zhòngyào shùjù, yǐfáng xìtǒng tūrán bēngkuì.

Please back up important data in advance in case the system suddenly crashes.

以防 presents the system crash as a possibility to prepare for. The backup protects the data; it does not itself prevent the system from crashing.

Formal Hypotheticals: 若 and 倘若

若 and 倘若 introduce hypothetical conditions, much like 如果 in this use. They often fit written or formal expression. Either can introduce a full clause, and an understood subject may be omitted. Their difference is not a fixed limit on the length of the following clause.

若 / 倘若 hypothetical condition clause , resulting consequence clause
  • 若 is concise and semi-classical. It frequently combines directly with single-syllable verbs or negators (such as 若有, 若无, 若非, or 若能) in legal clauses, public notices, and regulations.
  • 倘若 can stand before the subject, as in 倘若双方无法达成共识, or after it, as in 双方倘若无法达成共识. 若 also permits full clauses. Choose the phrasing and register that suit the sentence.

若无特别通知,明日的研讨会将照常举行。

Ruò wú tèbié tōngzhī, míngrì de yántǎohuì jiāng zhàocháng jǔxíng.

Unless there is a special notice, tomorrow's symposium will be held as scheduled.

Shows the compact, formal collocation 若无 in an announcement.

倘若双方无法达成共识,该项目只能暂时搁置。

Tǎngruò shuāngfāng wúfǎ dáchéng gòngshí, gāi xiàngmù zhǐ néng zànshí gēzhì.

If the two parties cannot reach a consensus, this project can only be temporarily shelved.

Uses 倘若 to introduce a full hypothetical clause in formal prose.

Common Learner Mistake: Redundant Negation After 免得 or 以防

After 免得 or 以防, describe the event you want to avoid or prepare for. Do not insert 不 merely to translate English “so that…not” or Thai “จะได้ไม่…”. If catching a cold is the unwanted event, 免得感冒 expresses that aim; 免得不感冒 reverses the intended relation. A negative predicate is appropriate when the failure is itself unwanted, as in 找不到地方.

多带一件厚外套吧,免得晚上感冒。

Duō dài yī jiàn hòu wàitào ba, miǎnde wǎnshang gǎnmào.

Bring an extra thick coat, so you don't catch a cold at night.

免得 directly introduces 感冒 as the event to avoid. The same extra coat and night-time situation remain.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the syllabus list 鉴于2 with a number?

The number distinguishes uses in the outline; it is not pronounced as part of the word. The outline places 鉴于1 with prepositions introducing a basis, and 鉴于2 with clause/sentence conjunctions. This lesson focuses on the latter, as in 鉴于近期天气变化剧烈.

Can 免得 or 以防 be placed at the very beginning of a sentence?

以防万一 can come first, as in 以防万一,请再备份一份. With 免得, the usual learner pattern puts the action first, then the unwanted outcome: 写清楚地址,免得找不到地方. Learn this useful pattern without turning it into a ban on every possible word order.

Can 若 and 倘若 always substitute for each other?

They often share a hypothetical meaning, but register and the whole sentence affect the choice. 若无 and 倘若没有 are useful alternatives, and both 若双方无法达成共识 and 倘若双方无法达成共识 are possible. It is not a rule that 若 requires a short clause and 倘若 a long one.
