Scope and Register of Advanced Time Adverbs
In the HSK 7-9 grammar outline under word classes and adverbs, thirteen specific items are grouped as time adverbs: 姑且, 即, 即时, 届时, 尽早, 就此, 历来, 尚, 随即, 向来, 一经, 暂且, and 早日. Unlike basic temporal markers that simply state when an event happens, these advanced adverbs compress complex temporal relationships—such as conditional immediacy, tentative postponement, or unbroken historical habit—into concise two-character or single-character modifiers.
Most of these adverbs belong to formal written Chinese, official notices, news reporting, or polite correspondence. Knowing how to group them by temporal function makes it much easier to choose the right word for a specific context.
Immediate Sequence and Termination: 一经, 即, 即时, 随即, 就此
Five adverbs in this group deal with actions that follow closely upon a trigger or conclude at a specific point. They differ in whether they introduce a condition, mark the resulting action, or close an ongoing process.
- 一经 (“once / as soon as”): introduces an event treated as triggering the following consequence. The phrase need not be exactly two syllables. 一经…即… is one formal model, not the only possible pairing.
- 即 (immediately / then): A concise single-character adverb placed directly before the result verb, often paired with 一经 in the prior clause.
- 即时 (“immediately / in real time”): presents an action as occurring directly or in real time, as in 即时保存. It need not mean “right now” relative to the speaker: the action may be discussed as a future function or event.
- 随即 (shortly afterward / right away): Narrates two past or sequential events where the second happens right on the heels of the first.
- 就此 (at this point / thus / hereupon): Indicates that an action concludes or transitions right at the current time or circumstance mentioned.

一经 introduces the prerequisite action in an official style, and 即 marks the immediate consequence.
主持人宣布散会,大家随即离开,讨论也就此结束。
随即 connects two sequential actions in narrative, while 就此 marks the point where the process stops.
Appointed Time and Earliness: 届时, 尽早, 早日
When referring to future events, advanced Chinese distinguishes between a fixed future point and the desire to make an event happen sooner.
届时 refers to when an expected or appointed time arrives. The time can be established by earlier text, a shared plan or the wider situation; it need not be repeated in the immediately preceding clause. It is not a general substitute for “sometime in the future.” 尽早 and 早日 instead express a wish or intention for something to happen sooner.
培训将于下周举行,届时会演示系统如何即时保存文件。
届时 refers to the training time mentioned earlier. 即时 describes the way the system saves files; it does not order the listener to save something at the moment of speaking.
尽早 means as early or soon as possible, often in requests and plans. 早日 means at an early date or soon, often for desired developments such as 早日完成任务 or 早日康复. These are tendencies, not a rule that one requires full personal control or the other occurs only in blessings. For an earlier time on a particular morning, use 早点 or 早些.
你应该尽早去医院检查,祝你早日康复。
尽早 expresses urgency in the suggested checkup; 早日 expresses the hoped-for recovery. These collocations illustrate common uses, not a requirement that an outcome be fully under the person’s control.
× 为了避免迟到,我明天早日起床。
The intended meaning is an earlier time tomorrow morning, not reaching a milestone at an early date. Replace 早日 with 早点, as in the next sentence.
Corrected example: 为了避免迟到,我明天早点起床。
为了避免迟到,我明天早点起床。
早点 gives the earlier time of day. 尽早起床 can instead stress getting up as early as possible, which is stronger than this simple earlier-morning intention.
Provisional and Temporary Action: 姑且 and 暂且
Both 姑且 and 暂且 translate roughly as for the time being or tentatively, and both stand before the verb phrase. However, they emphasize different reasons for acting temporarily.
姑且 often suggests accepting, trying or leaving something aside for now despite reservations. 暂且 foregrounds a temporary arrangement. Their meanings can overlap: 暂且相信你 also accepts something for the time being. Do not infer a particular hidden doubt or timetable from either word alone.
既然没有更好的办法,我们姑且试试这个方案,其余问题暂且搁置。
姑且 expresses a concessive decision to try something despite limitations; 暂且 marks temporary postponement.
Continuity and Ongoing States: 历来, 向来, 尚
The remaining three adverbs describe states that stretch from the past into the present or remain unfinished at the reference point.
- 历来 (“all along / traditionally”): describes a long-standing pattern. It can apply to people as well as institutions or traditions; it is not reserved for an organization.
- 向来 (“all along / always”): describes an established habit, attitude or pattern of a person or group. It overlaps with 历来; the subject is not a mechanical person-versus-institution test.
- 尚 (“still / yet”): marks a remaining state or pending action in expressions such as 尚未, 尚可 and 尚待观察. It does not freely replace every meaning of 还, and the following word need not always have two syllables.
这家店历来重视品质,我也向来支持他们,但新产品的效果尚待观察。
历来 and 向来 both describe established patterns here, while 尚 marks that the product’s effect remains to be observed. The two continuity words are not restricted to institutional and personal subjects respectively.
Frequently asked questions
Can 随即 and 即 be swapped freely?
Not always. 即 is a single-character literary adverb often used in rules, definitions, or paired conditionals (such as 一经...即...), whereas 随即 is primarily a narrative adverb describing what happened right after a specific event.
What is the main difference between 历来 and 向来?
Both can describe a long-standing pattern of people, groups or institutions. 历来 can emphasize a history of practice, and 向来 an established habit or attitude. There is overlap; choose by the whole phrase rather than assigning one word only to organizations and the other only to individuals.
Can I start a conversation with 届时 to mean in the future?
届时 points to an expected or appointed time recoverable from the discussion or situation. It is not simply “in the future.” A shared plan may supply that reference even if the time is not written in the preceding sentence.
