Core Meaning and Grammatical Role
In the HSK 6 syllabus under sentence types and complex sentences (复句), 就算……,也…… is classified as a concessive complex sentence (让步复句). A concessive sentence temporarily grants a point—often an unfavorable obstacle, an extreme scenario, or a hypothetical condition—only to assert that the main conclusion or outcome remains unchanged.
The conjunction 就算 (jiùsuàn) means 'even if' or 'granted that'. It opens the subordinate clause by setting up a supposition. The adverb 也 (yě) appears in the main clause, translating to 'still' or 'even so', and locks in the invariable result. While 就算 most frequently introduces unverified future possibilities or counterfactual extremes, speakers also use it to concede an established fact while dismissing its relevance to the final outcome.

事已至此,就算他现在当面道歉,也挽回不了公司的声誉了。
Uses 就算……,也…… to dismiss the usefulness of a present action.
Sentence Structures and Word Order
In the basic paired frame, 就算 introduces the concession and 也 normally follows the second clause’s subject and precedes its predicate. Other adverbs may intervene before the main verb, as in 我们也一定要完成任务. The examples below show shared and different subjects.
- When the two clauses have different subjects, 就算 usually comes at the very beginning of the first clause, or immediately after the first subject, while the second subject precedes 也.
- When both clauses share the same subject or topic, that subject can be fronted before 就算, leaving 也 to introduce the second predicate directly.
- In conversation, 吧 can close the first clause to signal temporary acceptance: 就算你说得对吧,我们也得先核实. It is an optional tone choice, not part of the required frame.
这项技术极其复杂,就算资深专家亲自出面,也未必能当场找出故障原因。
Illustrates an extreme hypothetical scenario paired with 未必 (not necessarily) after 也.
这份合同他就算仔仔细细看上三遍,也未必能察觉其中的法律漏洞。
Demonstrates a fronted object topic ('this contract') and subject ('he') placed before 就算.
Register, Statements, and Rhetorical Questions
就算……也…… is common in conversation and argument. 即使……也…… often suits a more formal tone. These are usage tendencies: 就算 and 哪怕 can both occur in written arguments, so neither is inherently less standard or excluded from writing.
In standard declarative statements, the second clause almost always uses 也 (sometimes reinforced as 也还是 or 仍然). However, in rhetorical questions that challenge an interlocutor's assumption, speakers frequently replace or supplement 也 with 难道 (nándào) or 就 (jiù) to ask 'even if X happens, could it really be that Y?' This variation preserves the concessive logic while sharpening the argumentative tone.
就算你把责任全推给下属,难道就能掩盖管理上的失职吗?
Shows how a rhetorical question can use 难道就 in the second clause instead of a plain declarative 也.
Key Contrasts with Similar Conjunctions
Advanced learners need to distinguish 就算……,也…… from two closely related structures: formal hypothetical concessions and factual adversative sentences.
- 就算……,也…… vs. 即使……,也……: Both translate to 'even if..., still...' and follow identical word-order rules. The primary difference is register. 即使 is noticeably more formal and literary, frequently appearing in legal texts, academic writing, and official reports. 就算 feels more natural in spoken arguments, interviews, and general prose. Additionally, 就算 carries a vivid nuance of 'calculating or counting it as true for the sake of argument'.
- 虽然……但是…… presents a point as an accepted premise, while 就算……也…… grants a point for the argument, often hypothetically. This contrast concerns the speaker’s framing; 虽然 does not require an objectively proven or already completed event.
- 哪怕……也…… often highlights an extreme or minimal case: 哪怕只有一分钟,我也想见你 (“Even if it is only one minute, I still want to see you”). It is not restricted to frightening or negative situations. 就算 also grants a condition while maintaining the second-clause claim.
Common Learner Pitfalls
When practising this outline frame, make the pairing visible with 就算 and 也. Do not turn this exercise target into a blanket grammatical rule: the festival sentence below is already natural with 照常, and rhetorical questions can express the concession differently. Judge the whole sentence rather than counting connectives.
就算明天下暴雨,户外音乐节照常举行。
This sentence is grammatical: 照常 already expresses that the plan remains unchanged. The next example adds 也会 to practise the paired frame explicitly; it is not a necessary repair.
就算明天下暴雨,户外音乐节也会照常举行。
A version with an explicit 也会 after the subject 户外音乐节. Compare it with the equally grammatical preceding version using 照常 without 也.
Frequently asked questions
Can I always swap 就算 and 即使 in HSK 6 writing?
They are often interchangeable when granting a hypothetical concession, but the surrounding wording and tone still matter. 即使 often sounds more formal and 就算 more conversational. The outline lists a teaching pattern; it does not establish a scoring rule preferring one word in every essay.
Can I use 但是 instead of 也 in the second clause after 就算?
For the basic paired frame taught here, use 就算……也……. If another sentence includes 但是 to mark an explicit contrast, assess its complete context rather than calling it automatically ungrammatical. This outline entry does not supply an examination marking rule about that combination.
Why can 吧 appear at the end of the 就算 clause?
吧 can soften a temporary concession: “Let us grant that point.” It is optional. The main clause can use the explicit 也 frame practised here, while other natural concessive expressions are also possible.
