HSK 6 Adverbs of Scope: 净, 一同, and 大都

This lesson explains the three adverbs of scope grouped at Level 6 in the HSK outline: 净, 一同, and 大都. You will learn how each word restricts or summarizes a range of actions, objects, or subjects, along with their register differences and structural limits.

Subject / Location 净 Verb Object / Category
Example sentence

他每次开会净说些没用的客套话。

tā měi cì kāihuì jìng shuō xiē méi yòng de kètaohuà .

At meetings, he says nothing but empty pleasantries.

Here 净 restricts the scope of what he says and conveys mild annoyance in spoken Chinese.

A common mistake

× 大都学生已经交了论文。

dàdōu xuésheng yǐjīng jiāo le lùnwén .

Intended: Most students have already handed in their papers.

Incorrect: 大都 is an adverb and cannot be placed before a noun like 学生 to modify it. Use the structure in “学生大都已经交了论文。” instead.

Corrected example: 学生大都已经交了论文。

What Are These Adverbs of Scope?

In the HSK Level 6 grammar outline, 净 (jìng), 一同 (yītóng), and 大都 (dàdōu) are grouped under adverbs of scope (范围副词). Adverbs of scope define the boundaries of a statement: whether an action involves only one category of things, whether participants act jointly as a single group, or whether a predicate applies to most members of a set.

Although all three sit in the pre-predicate adverbial position (after the subject or topic and before the main verb or adjective), they differ sharply in tone and function. Mastering them requires knowing both the scope each word marks and the register in which it sounds natural.

净: Colloquial Exclusivity ('Only' or 'Nothing But')

As an adverb of scope, 净 means 'only', 'solely', or 'all'. It restricts the scope of the predicate so that nothing outside the mentioned category is included. It is strongly colloquial and often carries a mildly complaining or exasperated tone, implying that someone keeps doing only one undesirable thing or that a place is filled exclusively with one type of item.

Subject / Location 净 Verb Object / Category

他每次开会净说些没用的客套话。

tā měi cì kāihuì jìng shuō xiē méi yòng de kètaohuà .

Here 净 restricts the scope of what he says and conveys mild annoyance in spoken Chinese.

箱子里净是旧杂志,没有一本新书。

xiāngzi lǐ jìng shì jiù zázhì , méiyǒu yī běn xīn shū .

In the box there are nothing but old magazines; there is not a single new book.

净是 limits the contents to old magazines. The sentence specifies no new books but does not say how many old magazines are present.

净是 emphasizes that the items belong to the stated category. It does not specify a large amount: a box containing only two old magazines can still be described as 净是旧杂志. The “nothing but” use is conversational; formal 净增 or 净收益 uses a separate “net, after deductions” meaning.

一同: Joint Action ('Together')

一同 means participating or acting together, with a somewhat written or formal tone compared with many uses of 一起. Joint action does not require everyone to occupy the same physical place: teams in different locations can 一同完成项目.

subject or topic; relevant group, partners or occasions may be understood 一同 Verb Phrase

两位专家受邀一同出席了闭幕式。

liǎng wèi zhuānjiā shòuyāo yītóng chūxí le bìmùshì .

The two experts were invited to attend the closing ceremony together.

一同 links the plural subject into a joint action in a formal register.

毕业后,他决定跟朋友一同创业。

bìyè hòu , tā juédìng gēn péngyou yītóng chuàngyè .

After graduating, he decided to start a business together with his friends.

A singular subject combines with 跟...一同 to express joint participation.

Multiple participants may be expressed in the subject, in a 跟/和/与 phrase, or understood from context. 你也一同来吧 has a singular subject while the other participants are already understood. Count the participants in the situation, not only the nouns overtly written as the subject.

大都: Majority Scope ('Mostly' or 'For the Most Part')

大都 means 'for the most part', 'mostly', or 'on the whole'. It summarizes a plural group or collection of cases, stating that the predicate applies to the majority of them while leaving room for exceptions. It is similar in meaning to 大多 (dàduō) and works well in both neutral spoken summaries and written exposition.

subject or topic; relevant group, partners or occasions may be understood 大都 Verb / Adjective Phrase

参会代表大都赞成这项改革方案。

cānhuì dàibiǎo dàdōu zànchéng zhè xiàng gǎigé fāng'àn .

The participating representatives mostly approve of this reform plan.

大都 follows the plural subject and precedes the verb 赞成.

沿海城市的气候大都比较湿润。

yánhǎi chéngshì de qìhòu dàdōu bǐjiào shīrùn .

The climate of coastal cities is mostly quite humid.

大都 summarizes a class of cases and modifies an adjectival predicate.

Key Contrasts and Common Learner Mistakes

In the student example, 大都 is being used as though it directly meant the noun modifier “most.” For that intended meaning, use 学生大都已经交了论文 or 大多数学生已经交了论文. The issue is grammatical function, not a general ban on sentence-initial 大都.

学生大都已经交了论文。

xuésheng dàdōu yǐjīng jiāo le lùnwén .

Most of the students have already handed in their papers.

The group is 学生, and 大都 states that most members have submitted. 大多数学生 already expresses that majority within the noun phrase and offers an alternative structure.

  • Do not use 大都 directly as the modifier in 大都学生. A sentence can nevertheless begin 大都是学生 when the group being discussed is understood; 是 supplies the predicate.
  • If you want to modify a noun directly before the subject position, use 大多数 or 大部分 instead (for example, placing 大多数 before the noun 'students').
  • Keep register in mind: 净 is strongly conversational, whereas 一同 and 大都 fit comfortably into formal writing and news style.
  • Check the relevant set: 一同 involves joint participants, possibly understood from context. 大都 can range over people, things or occasions; 我大都在家吃饭 has a singular subject but summarizes repeated occasions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 净 and 只?

Both can mean 'only', but 只 is register-neutral and simply restricts scope, whereas 净 is colloquial and often implies 'nothing but' or 'all full of', frequently carrying a mildly complaining tone.

Can 一同 and 一起 always replace each other?

They overlap in joint-action phrases such as 一同前往 and 一起前往. 一同 often sounds more written. 一起 also has other grammatical uses: 把文件放在一起 means to put the documents together, and 一同 does not replace 一起 in that location expression.

Why can't I put 大都 at the very beginning of a sentence before a noun?

The problem is using 大都 as a noun modifier in 大都学生. Use 学生大都已经交了论文 or 大多数学生已经交了论文. But 大都是学生 is possible with a group understood from context: 大都 then modifies 是, not 学生 directly.
