HSK 6 Adverbs of Degree: 特, 异常, and 较为
特 gives strong colloquial emphasis, 异常 highlights an exceptional degree, and 较为 expresses a relative assessment, often in written analysis. Learn natural combinations such as 特好吃, 异常艰难 and 较为完善. Register and phrasing matter; a simple syllable-count rule does not explain every choice.

这家小店的面条特好吃,每天都排长队。
Correct: 特 modifies the adjective 好吃 in casual conversation.

Register and Intensity at a Glance
In the Level 6 grammar outline (2025-11 edition with a 2026-07 implementation label), the word-class category for adverbs groups together three adverbs of degree: 特, 异常, and 较为. Note that syllabus levels reflect this specific curriculum outline rather than a guarantee of what any particular test center administers on a given date. Mastering these three words requires looking beyond basic English translations like 'very' or 'quite' and paying close attention to formality and word length.
- 特: High intensity, distinctly colloquial and spoken (often bearing northern regional flavor), shortened in feel from 特别.
- 异常: Very high intensity ('exceptionally' or 'unusually'), used in formal, literary, or news registers to describe states that go beyond the norm.
- 较为: relative or qualified degree, often used in written assessment; its actual strength depends on the adjective and context.
Colloquial Emphasis with 特
In colloquial degree use, 特 emphasizes an adjective or a suitable psychological verb: 特好吃, 特佩服 or 特讨厌. It can express praise or dislike, not only enthusiasm. Learn this use separately from other meanings of 特.
这家小店的面条特好吃,每天都排长队。
Correct: 特 modifies the adjective 好吃 in casual conversation.
我特佩服那些能坚持早起锻炼的人。
Correct: 特 modifies the psychological verb 佩服 in spoken Chinese.
Extreme States with 异常
While 异常 can act as an adjective meaning 'abnormal' (as in anomalous data), as an adverb of degree it means 'exceptionally' or 'extraordinarily'. It implies that the degree of a quality surpasses ordinary expectations. You will encounter it frequently in written narratives, journalism, and formal commentary.
救援工作在暴风雪中显得异常艰难。
Correct: 异常 precedes the formal disyllabic adjective 艰难.
Unlike 特 and 较为, which must always precede the word they modify, 异常 also has a literary pattern where it follows a two-syllable adjective directly without 得, functioning as an intensifying complement.
谈判现场的气氛紧张异常,谁也不敢先开口。
Correct: 异常 follows the adjective 紧张 in a written narrative style to emphasize extreme degree.
Measured Moderation with 较为
较为 is useful for relative or qualified assessments in written explanation. It does not make a judgment objective or independently support it. Compare a predicate such as 风险较为可控 with a noun modifier such as 较为完善的解决方案. The attributive pattern below forms a noun phrase; it is not a complete subject-predicate sentence by itself.
目前来看,这几个投资项目的风险较为可控。
较为可控 presents a qualified risk assessment within this invented language example. The word choice does not verify any real investment project’s risk.
调查小组提出了一套较为完善的解决方案。
Correct: 较为 modifies 完善 inside an attributive phrase with 的.
Choosing Natural Combinations
Compare complete expressions rather than counting syllables in isolation. 较高, 较大 and 较快 are concise models; 较为完善 and 较为稳定 are useful longer combinations. The examples below keep the same material and degree judgment while showing a more concise wording. No universal two-syllable-only rule is established here.
这种新兴材料的稳定性较为高。
This wording conveys a relatively high level of stability, but 较高 in the next example is a clearer, more concise learner model for this short sentence. Treat the comparison as guidance about phrasing rather than deriving a universal grammatical ban from the syllable count.
这种新兴材料的稳定性较高。
较高 is a concise conventional expression for “relatively high.” It preserves the same material and stability assessment as the preceding example.
For this intended meaning, use 稳定性较高 as a compact model. 较为稳定 describes something as fairly stable, a different grammatical organization; it should not be substituted by changing the intended property or result. Learn each expression in its full sentence.
- Colloquial conversation about daily life: Choose 特 (or 特别 / 比较).
- Written assessment: learn combinations such as 较为完善 and concise forms such as 较高; choose from the intended adjective, context and phrasing.
- Formal narrative emphasizing an extraordinary or severe degree: Choose 异常.
Frequently asked questions
Can 特 always replace 特别?
No. 特好吃 illustrates a colloquial degree use corresponding to 特别好吃. But 特 has other meanings: 特来拜访 uses it for a special purpose in a more formal sentence. Meanwhile, the predicate 这个设计很特别 uses adjectival 特别. Learn these constructions separately rather than shortening every 特别 to 特.
Does 异常 only modify negative adjectives?
No. Although the adjective 异常 means 'abnormal', the degree adverb 异常 simply means 'exceptionally' or 'unusually'. It can modify challenging states (like 异常艰难 'exceptionally difficult'), neutral states (异常安静 'unusually quiet'), and positive states (异常精彩 'extraordinarily wonderful' or 异常兴奋 'exceptionally excited').
Is it wrong to say 较为 in everyday conversation?
It is not ungrammatical, but it sounds bookish and stiff in casual chat. In everyday speech, native speakers strongly prefer 比较 or 挺...的 instead of 较为.
