HSK 5 Comparative Pattern: A + Adjective + B + Quantity Complement

A restricted set of Chinese adjectives can directly precede the comparison target without 比, followed by a phrase measuring the difference: 哥哥大我三岁. Many common examples are monosyllabic, but syllable count alone does not determine which adjectives fit.

Subject Being Compared (A) Adjective that fits this comparison pattern Standard of Comparison (B) Quantity Complement
Example sentence

哥哥大我三岁,从小就很照顾我。

gēge dà wǒ sān suì , cóngxiǎo jiù hěn zhàogù wǒ .

My older brother is three years older than me, and he has taken great care of me since we were little.

Correct: 大 (older) directly precedes 我 (Entity B), followed by the required quantity complement 三岁 (three years).

A common mistake

× 哥哥大我。

gēge dà wǒ .

Intended: My older brother is older than me.

Incorrect: The pattern A + Adjective + B cannot stand alone without a quantity complement. Either add a quantity like 三岁 (see the corrected example) or say 哥哥比我大.

Corrected example: 哥哥大我三岁,从小就很照顾我。

What This Pattern Means and How It Forms

At Level 5 in the HSK outline under special sentence types, comparative sentence type 4 introduces a compact way to express a measured difference between two entities without using the preposition 比.

Subject Being Compared (A) Adjective that fits this comparison pattern Standard of Comparison (B) Quantity Complement

In this construction, the adjective is placed directly between the two compared entities, functioning almost like a transitive verb. Entity A possesses the quality to a greater degree than Entity B, and the quantity complement at the end states the exact margin of difference, such as three years, two hours, or half a head.

这位新同事高我半个头,站在人群里特别显眼。

zhè wèi xīn tóngshì gāo wǒ bàn ge tóu , zhàn zài rénqún lǐ tèbié xiǎnyǎn .

This new colleague is half a head taller than me and stands out particularly in a crowd.

Correct: 高 (taller) takes 我 as its direct reference point and 半个头 (half a head) as the quantity complement.

Which Adjectives and Complements Work Here

This direct pattern is more lexically restricted than an ordinary 比 comparison. Learn which adjective, comparison target and measurement naturally go together; the following points describe common combinations rather than an automatic rule based only on word length.

  • Frequent adjectives include 大, 小, 高, 低, 早 and 晚. Some longer words also allow this frame, such as 年长 in 他年长我三岁. Conversely, being monosyllabic does not make every adjective suitable.
  • Entity B is typically a personal pronoun or a concise noun phrase referring to a person, group, or scheduled event.
  • The quantity complement is obligatory. You cannot stop the clause right after Entity B; a specific number and measure word (or an approximate quantity phrase) must close the comparison.

妹妹只小他一届,所以他们在大学里见过几次。

mèimei zhǐ xiǎo tā yí jiè , suǒyǐ tāmen zài dàxué lǐ jiànguo jǐ cì .

My younger sister was only one year behind him in school, so they met a few times in college.

Correct: 小 (junior/lower in cohort) is used with 一届 (one graduating class/academic cohort) to compare student seniority.

老王的航班早我们两个小时,现在应该已经到酒店了。

Lǎo Wáng de hángbān zǎo wǒmen liǎng ge xiǎoshí , xiànzài yīnggāi yǐjīng dào jiǔdiàn le .

Old Wang's flight is two hours earlier than ours, so he should have arrived at the hotel by now.

Correct: 早 (earlier) directly precedes 我们 (shortened for 我们的航班 in natural context) with 两个小时 (two hours) specifying the time difference.

Statements, Questions, and Register

Speakers favor this pattern in conversational and narrative contexts when stating biographical facts, comparing school cohorts or work seniority, and coordinating schedules. Because it skips the preposition 比, the rhythm is brisk and compact.

To ask about the size of the difference, replace the number in the quantity complement with an interrogative word such as 几 (how many) or 多少 (how much), while keeping the exact same word order.

你爱人大你几岁?

nǐ àirén dà nǐ jǐ suì ?

How many years older than you is your spouse?

Correct: Replacing the number with 几 (how many) forms a natural question about the exact age gap.

Contrast with 比 Sentences and Common Pitfalls

Every sentence using A + Adjective + B + Quantity Complement can be rewritten using the standard 比 structure without changing its core factual meaning. Notice how the word order shifts: in a 比 sentence, the standard of comparison (Entity B) comes before the adjective.

Subject Being Compared (A) 比 Standard of Comparison (B) Adjective that fits this comparison pattern Quantity Complement

However, the reverse is not true. Not every 比 sentence with a quantity complement can be compressed into the A + Adjective + B + Quantity Complement form. When comparing prices with 贵 (expensive) or 便宜 (cheap), or when using two-syllable adjectives like 漂亮 (pretty) or 聪明 (smart), learners should use the standard 比 construction.

这件羽绒服比那件贵三百块钱。

zhè jiàn yǔróngfú bǐ nà jiàn guì sānbǎi kuài qián .

This down jacket is three hundred yuan more expensive than that one.

Correct contrast: With adjectives like 贵 (expensive) comparing objects, the standard 比 construction is preferred over putting Entity B after the adjective.

The most critical structural rule in this pattern is that the quantity complement holds the predicate together. If you want to make a general comparison without stating a quantity, you must use 比. Dropping the quantity complement from the direct adjective pattern produces an incomplete, ungrammatical sentence.

× 哥哥大我。

gēge dà wǒ .

Frequently asked questions

Can I use two-syllable adjectives in the A + Adjective + B + Quantity Complement pattern?

Some do fit: 他年长我三岁 is a natural example. Many common forms use a small set of monosyllabic words such as 大 and 高, but this is a lexical pattern, not a universal one-syllable rule. Do not freely substitute adjectives such as 聪明 or 便宜; use 比 for an unfamiliar combination.

Can I put 很 or 非常 before the adjective in this pattern?

For the target construction, say 大我三岁 rather than 很大我三岁. 很 and 非常 are not normally inserted before the adjective here, while a limiting adverb such as 只 can be: 只大我三岁. Learn this as a property of the construction, rather than a general logical ban on numbers occurring near degree words.

What happens if I do not know the exact quantity of difference?

If you do not want to state a specific or approximate quantity (such as 几岁 or 很多), you cannot place Entity B after the adjective. You must switch to the standard comparative pattern: A + 比 + B + Adjective.
