Using 好 to Express Purpose in Chinese

In this HSK 4 pattern, 好 introduces an intended purpose or useful next step: one action is done so that another action or result is possible. Learn where 好 belongs, how the two parts connect, and when another connector is more suitable.

Action or arrangement ,(主语)好 Intended-purpose predicate
Example sentence

我先把座位留好,你们到了好一起吃饭。

Wǒ xiān bǎ zuòwèi liú hǎo, nǐmen dào le hǎo yìqǐ chīfàn.

I’ll save the seats first so that we can eat together when you arrive.

好 introduces the intended purpose of saving the seats.

Meaning: an action with a purpose

The pattern ……,好…… links an action with the purpose it is meant to serve. The first part says what someone does, arranges, or requests; the part after 好 says what that action will make possible or easier. In English, the relation often corresponds to “so that,” “so,” or “in order to.” The second part is an intended outcome, not necessarily a result that has already happened.

Here, keeping the seats is done for the purpose of eating together after everyone arrives. The sentence presents a plan; it does not report that the meal has already taken place.

我把地址发给你,你好直接打车过来。

Wǒ bǎ dìzhǐ fā gěi nǐ, nǐ hǎo zhíjiē dǎchē guòlái.

I’ll send you the address so that you can take a taxi straight here.

The stated purpose is to make the next step easier for the listener.

Form the two parts in order

State the action or arrangement first. For a different subject in the purpose part, put it before 好: 我把地址发给你,你好直接打车过来. With a shared or understood subject, use a verb phrase after 好, as in 好赶上第一班车. 好让…… is another option: 好让我知道…… means “so as to let me know…”, with 我 inside the 让 construction. Do not teach 好 + any complete clause as an unrestricted template.

Action or arrangement ,(主语)好 Intended-purpose predicate
  • First state the action, request, or arrangement.
  • Then add 好 and the intended purpose or useful next step.
  • Use context to identify who is expected to carry out the purpose.

When this pattern is useful

Use 好 when explaining the practical aim behind an action, especially in plans, instructions, and requests. The pattern can make a request sound purposeful: the speaker asks for one action because it will help with a later step. It is not limited to formal writing. In conversation, the surrounding context usually makes the intended connection clear.

请把重点记下来,好回去以后复习。

Qǐng bǎ zhòngdiǎn jì xiàlái, hǎo huíqù yǐhòu fùxí.

Please write down the key points so that you can review them after you get back.

好 introduces the purpose of the request.

你出门前给我打个电话,好让我知道你什么时候到。

Nǐ chūmén qián gěi wǒ dǎ ge diànhuà, hǎo ràng wǒ zhīdào nǐ shénme shíhou dào.

Call me before you leave so that I’ll know when you’re arriving.

The caller is 你; 我 is the person who learns the arrival time, within 好让 + 我 + 知道.

In the request to take notes, reviewing later is the goal. In the phone-call example, the fuller clause after 好 explains the useful purpose of calling: the speaker can learn the arrival time.

Purpose is different from reason

A purpose answers “What is this action for?” A reason answers “Why did this happen?” With 好, the second part normally describes an aim or intended next step. A reason connector instead explains the cause or grounds for the first statement. Choose the connector according to the relationship you mean; a sentence with a reason connector is not automatically ungrammatical, but it may express a different relationship.

我把座位留好了,因为你们马上就到。

Wǒ bǎ zuòwèi liú hǎo le, yīnwèi nǐmen mǎshàng jiù dào.

I have saved the seats because you will arrive any moment.

A correct reason sentence. The imminent arrival explains the action; it does not state the purpose through 好.

Common interpretation checks

Do not assume 好 itself means “good” in this construction. Here it links the preceding action to a purpose. Also avoid reading the second part as a guaranteed outcome: the sentence expresses intention or usefulness, while circumstances may prevent the purpose from being achieved. A natural translation depends on context, so “so that” is a guide to the relationship rather than a required word-for-word translation.

我们早点儿出发,好赶上第一班车。

Wǒmen zǎodiǎnr chūfā, hǎo gǎnshàng dì yī bān chē.

Let’s set out a little early so that we can catch the first bus.

Catching the bus is the intended result of leaving early.

Scope of this lesson

This lesson covers the purpose-clause pattern listed for this outline point. Frequently asked questions

Can the purpose part have a different subject?

Yes. In 我把地址发给你,你好直接打车过来, the purpose subject 你 appears before 好. In 你出门前给我打个电话,好让我知道你什么时候到, you call so that I can learn the arrival time.

Does 好 mean that the purpose was achieved?

No. It marks an intended purpose or useful next step; it does not guarantee the outcome.
