Meaning: a further supporting point
This paired pattern presents a first fact, then adds another fact that makes the overall description fuller or more persuasive. The second part is not merely the next event: it develops the same general point by adding a related quality, ability, result, or reason. For example, a place may be quiet and also convenient; a person may cook and also have a special skill.
Formation and word order
With a shared subject, place 不仅/不光 after it: 她不仅会做饭,还会开车. With different subjects, the first marker can precede the first subject: 不仅孩子们喜欢这个故事,而且老师们也喜欢. In the library and train examples, the whole sentence has a shared topic, while 环境/开放时间 and 到达/车厢里的情况 describe different aspects; do not confuse a shared topic with an identical subject in every clause.
- 不仅 and 不光 both introduce the first point in this pattern. 不仅 is common in both speech and writing; 不光 often sounds conversational.
- Position matters as well as tone. 而且 can introduce a clause before its new subject: 而且老师们也喜欢. 还 is an adverb and normally follows the subject in its clause: 她还会开车. Do not swap them mechanically without checking word order.
- The outline lists these alternatives as part of the same teaching pattern. They are not four separate meanings to memorize.
Examples in context
这家图书馆不仅环境安静,而且开放时间也很方便。
她不光会做饭,还会做几道拿手的川菜。
这趟火车不仅准时到达,而且车厢里也很干净。
这个课程不光内容实用,而且老师讲得很清楚。
When to use it, and a useful contrast
The added points can be positive or negative. 他不仅迟到了,而且还忘了带资料 adds a second problem to the first; it does not praise him. The relation is an expansion of one coherent description, not necessarily an improvement. Questions are possible when the wording genuinely asks about the connected points.
Compare 这间屋子很干净,也很安静 with 这间屋子不仅很干净,而且很安静. Both are grammatical. The paired construction explicitly invites a further point after the first; the 也 sentence gives a simpler addition. If two facts are unrelated, add context that explains why you group them rather than treating a connector as enough to create the relationship.
- Before using it, ask whether the second clause adds a related quality, ability, result, or reason.
- Place the added-point marker where its grammar requires it: 而且 may introduce a new subject, while 还 normally follows that subject.
- Use punctuation to separate the clauses clearly; the comma marks the pause between them.
A practical decision
When you want to say “not only this; there is also that,” choose 不仅 or 不光 for the first clause and 还 or 而且 for the added clause. Check that both clauses contribute to one coherent description. Choose the alternative that fits your tone, then read the sentence as a whole to make sure the second point really advances the first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I freely swap 不仅 and 不光, or 还 and 而且?
They overlap in this paired construction, but tone and placement differ. 不光 is often conversational. 而且 can introduce a new clause before its subject; 还 normally stands after the subject. Check the whole sentence, rather than changing one word in isolation.
Must both clauses have the same subject?
No. The subject may remain the same, or the added clause may have a different subject. Make the relationship between the two points clear.
Does the pattern itself make a question?
No. It connects two points in a statement or in a question whose wording and context call for an answer about both points.
