Connecting Clauses and Sentences in HSK 4: 此外, 而, 既然, 甚至, 不过, and 并且
At the intermediate level, natural Chinese requires moving beyond simple short sentences. This lesson explains six essential conjunctions from the Level 4 grammar outline—此外, 并且, 甚至, 而, 不过, and 既然—showing how each links clauses or full sentences to express addition, progression, contrast, and logical deduction.

Why Clause and Sentence Connectors Matter
The supplied Level 4 outline groups 此外, 而2, 既然, 甚至, 不过 and 并且 as connectors of clauses or sentences. Choose among them by the relationship between ideas and the tone of the passage; the punctuation patterns below are useful models, not rigid boundaries on every use.
Addition and Progression: 此外, 并且, and 甚至
When adding information, consider whether it is another point, a coordinated action or description, or a more unexpected point on the same scale. 并且 can connect clauses with the same or different subjects.
- 此外 means "in addition" or "furthermore". It is relatively formal and typically appears after a full stop or semicolon, followed by a comma, to add a new supporting point to what was just said.
- 并且 means “and” or “moreover”. It coordinates related verb phrases, descriptions or clauses. A shared subject is common but not required: 他负责订票,并且我负责订房.
- 甚至 means "even" (to the point that). It introduces a clause that represents a further step or an extreme, surprising example on the same scale as the previous clause. The second clause often uses 连...都/也... for extra emphasis.

此外 starts a new sentence and adds a second independent reason supporting the positive evaluation of the hotel.
他已经完成了报告,并且把文件发给了经理。
并且 adds a related action by the same subject here. The sequence comes from the actions described; 并且 itself does not always mean “and then”.
这几天太忙了,我连午饭都没时间吃,甚至连水都忘了喝。
甚至 introduces a more extreme example (forgetting to drink water) after the initial statement (no time for lunch).
Two Ways to Contrast: 而 (Sense 2) and 不过
The syllabus specifically lists 而2 (the adversative or contrasting sense of 而) alongside 不过. Both can translate to "but" or "however" in English, yet they serve very different conversational purposes.
In this usage, 而 contrasts parallel subjects, times or aspects, much like “whereas”. 不过 introduces a qualification or contrast and often sounds less forceful than 但是. It can raise a substantial objection too; do not infer that every point after 不过 must be minor or polite.
哥哥喜欢安静地看书,而弟弟喜欢出去踢足球。
Here 而 (sense 2) contrasts two parallel clauses with different subjects and opposite preferences.
这件大衣的质量很好,不过颜色有点儿太深了。
不过 affirms the coat's good quality first, then introduces a mild reservation about its color.
An Accepted Premise with 既然
既然 means "since" or "now that". It is placed in the first clause to state a fact that both the speaker and listener already know or accept. The second clause then draws a logical inference, makes a suggestion, or asks a rhetorical question, usually supported by 就, 那, or 也.
因为 explains a cause; 既然 presents a premise as accepted for the argument that follows. For a clear learning pattern, use 因为…所以… to explain a reason and 既然…就… to introduce a decision or inference. This is a difference in how the information is presented, not a rule that every occurrence of 既然 with 所以 is automatically meaningless.
因为外面下大雨了,所以我今天不出门了。
A correct 因为…所以… sentence explaining the reason. Compare the following 既然 sentence, which treats the rain as an accepted premise for the decision.
既然外面下大雨了,那我今天就不出门了。
The speaker takes the heavy rain as given and states a decision. 那 and 就 make that connection explicit without changing who will stay home.
Quick Selection Guide
- Use 此外 after a pause or period to add a separate, formal point to your argument.
- Use 并且 to coordinate related actions, descriptions or clauses; subjects may be shared or different.
- Use 甚至 when the second clause is an extreme or unexpected case that proves how far a situation goes.
- Use 而 to balance and contrast two parallel facts ("whereas"), and 不过 to gently qualify a statement ("though / however").
- Use 既然... (那)就... when moving from a shared, already-known fact to a logical suggestion or decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace 并且 with 和?
Usually no. 和 primarily connects nouns or pronouns, whereas 并且 connects clauses or verb phrases. When linking two full actions performed by a subject, use 并且.
Why does the syllabus write 而2?
The number is an outline entry label, not part of the word or its pronunciation. This lesson covers the contrasting clause connector 而, pronounced ér.
