无论…都/也…: Regardless of the Circumstances
Use 无论……,都/也…… when the result holds regardless of which condition, choice, person, time, or degree applies. Learn how to build both clauses, choose 都 or 也, and distinguish this pattern from nearby conditional forms.

无论下不下雨,我们都按计划出发。
Correct example. 下不下雨 presents two possibilities; 都 introduces the result that holds in either case.

Meaning: the result does not change
无论……,都/也…… links a range of possible conditions to a result that remains true across that range. The first clause names what may vary; the second states what holds regardless. In English, the sense is often “no matter …, …” or “whatever …, …”. This is the HSK 4 outline point for the conditional compound sentence pattern 无论……,都/也……; the outline establishes scope and level, not which test version a centre currently administers.
The pattern is useful when you want to reassure, make a commitment, or state a general response that covers multiple possibilities. It does not mean that the first clause is unimportant: the speaker presents it as a real variable, then says the result will hold across its possible values.
无论下不下雨,我们都按计划出发。
Correct example. 下不下雨 presents two possibilities; 都 introduces the result that holds in either case.
Here, rain may or may not fall; either way, the plan remains the same.
无论你选哪一本书,我也会支持你。
无论 introduces the choice range. 也 can convey continued support or relate it to prior assurances; it does not by itself quantify “every choice.”
Build both clauses
After the 无论 clause, name the result subject when needed and place 都 or 也 after that subject: 我们都按计划出发. The remaining predicate states what holds across the range. A subject understood from context may be omitted.
The first clause can use a question word to represent a range, such as 谁 (who), 哪儿 (where), 什么时候 (when), or 什么 (what). It can also present two alternatives, as 下不下雨 (whether it rains or not) does, or describe a degree with 多 + adjective. Do not translate these question words as direct questions when they introduce a range within this pattern.
无论问题有多难,她都先自己想一想。
Correct example. 有多难 expresses a variable degree, not a direct question.
有多难 represents a range of degrees here, not a request for an answer. 想一想 says that she gives the problem some thought first; it does not guarantee that she fully solves it.
无论谁来问,我都会如实回答。
Correct example. 谁 represents the range of possible people.
Choosing 都 or 也
Both 都 and 也 can appear in the result clause in this pattern. 都 commonly highlights that every possibility in the stated range leads to the result. 也 can emphasize that the result applies in each case, often with a sense similar to “also” or “even then” in context. The choice depends on the sentence’s focus and surrounding discourse; do not assume that one marker is always required or always more emphatic.
In the book example, 无论 establishes that the support covers the available choices. 也 can convey that the support remains or connect it with a previous assurance; 都 can directly emphasize all relevant cases. Do not assign the full meaning of the construction to 也 alone or assume “also” always implies a second supporter.
无论你什么时候到,我都在办公室等你。
Correct example. 什么时候 marks the time variable and 都 signals that the result applies across its values.
什么时候 marks time as the variable; 都 makes clear that the speaker will wait regardless of the arrival time.
Contrast and practical checks
不管……,都/也…… is a neighboring HSK outline pattern. It often expresses a similar “no matter …” relationship, so the two can overlap in ordinary contexts. This lesson focuses on 无论; do not infer that the forms are interchangeable in every sentence or register. When learning a particular sentence, keep its original wording and check whether the first clause presents a range of alternatives and the second gives a result that holds across them.
Compare 要是下雨,我们就改计划 with 无论下不下雨,我们都按计划出发. The first connects one condition with a change of plan; the second keeps the plan across the alternatives. Read the complete relationship, not just the fact that both sentences mention rain.
- Identify the variable in the 无论 clause: a person, place, time, choice, or degree.
- Check that the second clause states a result that holds across the relevant possibilities.
- Place 都 or 也 in the result clause and choose it to fit the emphasis.
- If the first clause is phrased with a question word, read it as an open range rather than automatically as a direct question.
Frequently asked questions
Does 谁 or 什么时候 make the sentence a question?
Not by itself in this pattern. The question word introduces a range of possible people, times, or other values. The sentence states what happens across that range.
Can I use 都 and 也 interchangeably?
They can have overlapping uses in this pattern, but their emphasis and fit depend on context. 都 commonly highlights coverage of every possibility; 也 can highlight that the result applies in each case. Learn the sentence in context.
Is 无论……,都/也…… identical to 不管……,都/也……?
They often express a similar relationship and may overlap, but that does not establish that they are interchangeable in every context or register. This lesson covers the 无论 pattern.
