Core Placement and Syllabus Scope
The supplied Level 4 outline groups these time adverbs together: 按时 (on time), 从来 (all along), 赶紧 and 赶快 (without delay), 已 (already), 忽然 (suddenly), 将 and 将要 (future events), 从 (in expressions such as 从不), and 本来 (originally). 将要 is one word in the source list. 要 also appears below to contrast its everyday future and modal uses.
A useful starting pattern is Subject + Adverb + Predicate, as in 我们按时到达. Some words also frame a whole clause, such as 忽然 and 本来 before the subject. Learn the placement of each word with its example rather than assuming every time adverb has one fixed position.
Schedules and Original Situations: 按时 and 本来
Use 按时 when an action meets a fixed schedule, deadline, or appointed hour—such as taking medicine, submitting homework, or attending a meeting. By contrast, 本来 looks backward to how things were at the start or what someone originally planned before circumstances changed. Sentences with 本来 very often continue with a contrast clause introduced by words like 但是 (but) or 后来 (later).
请大家明天按时参加会议。
按时 stands between the time noun (明天) and the verb phrase (参加会议) to specify punctuality.
我本来想今天去北京,但是买不到票。
本来 introduces the initial plan, which is then revised in the second clause after 但是.
Habitual Negation: 从来 and 从
从来 describes a situation continuing from the past to the relevant present. Practise 从来不 for a consistent negative habit and 从来没(有) for the absence of a past experience. Affirmative uses also occur: 从来都喜欢喝茶 and 从来如此. Do not infer that every sentence without 不 or 没 is wrong. 从 commonly occurs in concise negatives such as 从不迟到.
他从来都喜欢喝茶。
A correct affirmative use: 从来都 emphasizes a preference that has consistently held. Compare it with the negative 从来不 in the next example; the two sentences have different meanings.
他从来不喝咖啡。
从来不 expresses a consistent negative habit: he does not drink coffee. This is a separate negative example, not a correction of the affirmative tea sentence.
这位老师从不迟到。
Single-character 从 functions as a concise time adverb directly before 不.
Urgency vs. Sudden Change: 赶紧, 赶快, and 忽然
赶紧 and 赶快 both prompt action without delay and can overlap in everyday requests. 赶紧 often highlights attending to a pressing situation; 赶快 can likewise mean “right away,” not necessarily performing the action at a faster physical speed. 忽然 describes a sudden event or change instead of giving an instruction to hurry.
- 赶紧 (hurriedly / without losing time): emphasizes mental urgency to handle a pressing situation.
- 赶快 (right away / quickly): prompts action without delay, as in 赶快睡觉; it need not mean doing the action faster.
- 忽然 (suddenly / all of a sudden): describes an unforeseen occurrence or shift; never used to command someone to hurry.
快下雨了,我们赶紧回家吧,你也赶快收衣服。
Both 赶紧 and 赶快 urge immediate action in response to a pressing situation.
天忽然黑了下来。
忽然 modifies an unexpected change rather than urging someone to act.
Completed and Upcoming Events: 已, 将, 将要, and 要
已 is a compact, often formal counterpart of 已经. It can present an existing state as well as an accomplished event: 已到达北京 and 已知道消息. 将 is a formal future marker widely used in written reports. These words do not form a complete tense system for Mandarin.
When expressing that an event is imminent, 将要 (about to / soon to) bridges formal and neutral registers, while 要 (often paired with 快要 or a sentence-final 了, as in 要…了) is the everyday way to say something is about to happen or scheduled to occur. Keep in mind that 要 can also function as a modal verb meaning 'want to' or 'need to' depending on context.
代表团已到达北京,并将访问上海。
已 (already) and 将 (will) are standard in formal announcements and news writing.
新学期将要开始,大家要做好准备。
将要 marks an upcoming event, while 要 indicates a planned or required future action.
Frequently asked questions
Can 从来 ever be used in a positive sentence without 不 or 没?
Yes. 从来都喜欢喝茶 and 从来如此 are affirmative uses. 都 or 就 often make the continuity or emphasis clear. For a simple conversational statement about an ongoing preference, 一直喜欢 or 从来都喜欢 can be useful choices; absence of 不 or 没 alone does not make a sentence wrong.
What is the difference between 已 and 已经?
They share the core meaning of 'already', but 已 is more compact and formal. You will see 已 frequently in written notices, news headlines, and fixed four-character expressions, whereas 已经 is preferred in casual conversation.
Why can't I use 赶紧 when something happens suddenly?
赶紧 urges someone to act without delay. If you mean that rain began suddenly or a thought occurred unexpectedly, use an expression for suddenness, such as 忽然 or 突然. The difference is between prompting immediate action and describing a sudden event.
