What this pattern compares
This pattern compares two people, groups, days or other things by an action. It tells you how their actions differ in amount or timing. The outline lists four comparison words: 多 (more), 少 (less), 早 (earlier) and 晚 (later). In this lesson, 多 and 少 compare an amount; 早 and 晚 compare when an action happens.
The final quantity phrase gives the size of the difference: two books, one hour or ten minutes, for example. With 早 and 晚, it commonly states how much earlier or later. The pattern does not simply say that one person did more overall; it compares the amount or timing of the stated action in a particular context.
How to form the sentence
Use this order: A + 比 + B + 多/少/早/晚 + verb + quantity phrase. A and B are the two sides being compared. Put the comparison word before the action, and put the quantity phrase after the action. The quantity phrase may include a number and a suitable measure word, such as 两本书 or 一个小时.
- Choose 多 or 少 when the difference concerns how much of the action was done: 多看两本书 means reading two books more than the comparison person.
- Choose 早 or 晚 when the difference concerns the timing of the action: 早到十分钟 means arriving ten minutes earlier.
- The verb names the action being compared. Keep the comparison context clear so the listener knows what the amount or timing is measured against.
Examples in context
In each sentence, 比 introduces the comparison side, while the final quantity phrase gives the difference. The exact action and context determine how to understand the measure.
姐姐比我多看两本书。
多 compares the number of books read.
小王比小李少工作一个小时。
少 compares the amount of time spent working.
今天的火车比昨天早到十分钟。
早 compares arrival timing; the trains are identified by day.
周末我比平时晚睡一个小时。
晚 compares the timing of going to bed.
A useful contrast: statements and questions
Compare the meaning of the middle word. 多 and 少 answer “how much more or less?”; 早 and 晚 answer “how much earlier or later?” The same sentence frame works for both, but the comparison word changes what the quantity measures.
To ask for the amount of the difference, replace a known quantity with an interrogative phrase such as 几道题. The interrogative 几 carries the question; punctuation records it in writing but does not create the grammar. 你比我多做了几道题? asks for the difference, not the total number each person did.
你比我多做了几道题?
几道题 asks for the amount of the difference.
Choosing the comparison that fits
Supply a sensible comparison, such as two people doing similar work or the arrival times of comparable trains on two days. Distinguish duration from timing: 少工作一个小时 gives one hour less work, while 晚睡一个小时 gives a bedtime one hour later, not an extra hour of sleep. The final quantity is the difference; it is not the total amount or clock time.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the quantity phrase go?
After the verb: 比 + comparison word + verb + quantity phrase.
Do 早 and 晚 mean that an action is good or bad?
No. Here they compare timing: earlier or later than the stated comparison side.
Can I ask a question with this pattern?
Yes. Put an interrogative quantity phrase such as 几道题 after the verb to ask for the difference. A question mark represents the question in writing; it is not the grammatical signal by itself.
