Chinese Choice Sentences: 或者……,或者……
Learn to present two possible actions, choices, or outcomes with 或者……,或者……. See how the paired pattern works in statements and questions, and how its alternatives differ from actions happening at the same time.

周末我们或者去公园,或者在家看电影。
× 周末我们一边去公园,一边在家看电影。
For the intended either-or plan, 一边…一边… gives the wrong relationship: it suggests simultaneous activity. Use 周末我们或者去公园,或者在家看电影.
Corrected example: 周末我们或者去公园,或者在家看电影。

Meaning and use
The outline places 或者……,或者…… under choice compound sentences at HSK level 3. The pattern presents two alternatives: the speaker treats one possibility or the other as relevant. The alternatives may be actions, plans, or possible outcomes. The exact choice can be open, or it can depend on circumstances. The outline establishes this lesson’s scope and level; it does not establish which exam version is currently administered at every test centre.
- Use matching structures in both halves when possible: two actions, two places, or two complete clauses.
- The two alternatives do not need to be mutually exclusive in reality; the sentence presents them as the choices or possibilities under consideration.
- Statements normally use 或者 to present alternatives. A direct question asking the listener to choose generally uses 还是. A paired 或者 proposal can still be followed by 好吗 to ask whether the whole arrangement is acceptable.
Form the pair
Put 或者 before each alternative. Each half can be a complete clause with its own subject and predicate, or a shorter phrase when the shared context makes the relationship clear. Keep the alternatives parallel so the listener can compare them easily. A time or topic phrase may come first and apply to both halves.

周末我们或者去公园,或者在家看电影。
中午你或者吃米饭,或者吃面条。
我们或者坐地铁去,或者坐公共汽车去。
天气预报说明天或者下雨,或者刮风。
This states alternative forecast possibilities. It is not the unconditional “whether A or B, the same result follows” pattern.
我们或者今天晚上打电话,或者明天早上发消息,好吗?
好吗 asks whether the proposed arrangement is acceptable. To ask directly which option is wanted, use 还是: 你想今天晚上打电话,还是明天早上发消息?
Choice versus simultaneous actions
A useful contrast is 一边……,一边……, which describes two actions happening at the same time. It is not interchangeable with the choice pattern when the two activities cannot happen together in the stated context. For example, going to a park and watching a film at home are presented as alternative weekend plans, not simultaneous activities.
× 周末我们一边去公园,一边在家看电影。
For the intended either-or plan, 一边…一边… gives the wrong relationship: it suggests simultaneous activity. Use 周末我们或者去公园,或者在家看电影.
Corrected example: 周末我们或者去公园,或者在家看电影。
In the learner-error sentence, 一边……,一边…… is incorrect for the intended meaning of choosing one weekend plan. Replace it with 或者……,或者……, as in the corrected example. The error concerns this context and intended meaning; it does not mean that 一边……,一边…… is generally incorrect.
A quick way to choose
Ask whether you mean alternatives or simultaneous actions. For alternatives, use parallel options with 或者; for a direct choice question, compare 还是. In the final correct example, 好吗 asks for approval of a proposed arrangement rather than asking the listener to name one option. 不管A还是B,都C would instead say that the same result follows in either case.
Frequently asked questions
Can the alternatives be complete sentences?
Yes. Each half can contain a subject and predicate, or the halves can be shorter parallel phrases when context is clear.
Must 或者 appear twice?
The paired pattern taught here repeats it, but natural Chinese may omit one occurrence when context is clear.
Can I use this pattern in a question?
For a direct choice question, normally use 还是 rather than mechanically adding a question mark to 或者…或者…. The paired form can be part of a proposal followed by 好吗 to ask for approval.
