HSK 2 Separable Verbs (离合词): 帮忙, 游泳, 跳舞, and 跑步
In Chinese, separable verbs (离合词) act as single vocabulary words in basic statements, but split apart when you add aspect markers, time durations, or specific targets. This lesson explains how to use 帮忙 (to help), 游泳 (to swim), 跳舞 (to dance), and 跑步 (to run) naturally.

弟弟很喜欢游泳。
Correct: 游泳 stays unseparated when expressing a general preference after 喜欢.
× 请帮忙我。
Incorrect: 帮忙 is a verb-object compound (literally "help a favor") and cannot take an extra direct object like 我 after it. Replace it with 请帮我的忙 or 请帮我.
Corrected example: 请帮我的忙。

What Are Separable Verbs (离合词)?
When you learn English equivalents for Chinese actions—like "to swim," "to run," "to dance," or "to help"—it is easy to assume the two-character Chinese words work just like single English verbs. However, in the HSK 2 grammar outline, 帮忙 (bāngmáng), 游泳 (yóuyǒng), 跳舞 (tiàowǔ), and 跑步 (pǎobù) are classified as 离合词 (líhécí), or separable verbs.
In the separation patterns taught here, the first component carries verb-related marking and the second occupies an object-like position. The characters need not each have a freely usable modern noun meaning. Learn the full word and its accepted separated patterns rather than inventing a literal meaning for every component.
- 帮忙 (bāngmáng, to help): 帮 (verb: to help) + 忙 (noun object: busy work / a favor).
- 游泳 (to swim): in 游了...泳, verb-related material follows 游 and precedes the second component 泳. Do not use 泳 as a free noun meaning “a swimming stroke”.
- 跳舞 (tiàowǔ, to dance): 跳 (verb: to jump/perform) + 舞 (noun object: a dance).
- 跑步 (pǎobù, to run): 跑 (verb: to run) + 步 (noun object: footsteps/paces).
When to Keep Them Together
If you are simply stating a habit, an intention, an ongoing action, or a general preference without specifying how long the action lasted or who received the action directly, keep the two characters together as a normal verb.
弟弟很喜欢游泳。
Correct: 游泳 stays unseparated when expressing a general preference after 喜欢.
我每天早上跑步。
Correct: 跑步 stays together when describing a general habitual action without a specific duration.
Splitting for Aspect, Duration, and Quantity
Aspect marking, complements, and counts can occur inside a separable word, as the examples show. Another useful way to express duration is to repeat the verb: 他游泳游了一个小时. Do not assume every duration must split the original word, or that every numeral has the same position.
他昨天游了一个小时泳。
Correct: 游泳 splits so the aspect marker 了 and the duration 一个小时 can sit between the verb 游 and the inner object 泳.
姐姐跳了一支舞。
Correct: 跳舞 separates to allow the aspect marker 了 and the measure phrase 一支 to modify the noun 舞.
爸爸跑完步就去上班了。
Correct: The result complement 完 attaches directly to the verb stem 跑, placing the inner object 步 after 完.
The Direct Object Trap: 帮忙 vs. 帮
Among these four words, 帮忙 causes the most frequent learner errors. Because "help" takes a direct object in English ("Please help me"), learners often try to place a person directly after 帮忙. Because 忙 is already the grammatical object of 帮, adding a second object directly after 帮忙 is ungrammatical.
To specify who you are helping, you have two natural options. First, you can split 帮忙 and insert the person as a modifier before 忙 (often with 的). Second, you can drop 忙 altogether and use the single-syllable transitive verb 帮 (bāng) or the two-syllable non-separable verb 帮助 (bāngzhù).
× 请帮忙我。
Incorrect: 帮忙 is a verb-object compound (literally "help a favor") and cannot take an extra direct object like 我 after it. Replace it with 请帮我的忙 or 请帮我.
Corrected example: 请帮我的忙。
请帮我的忙。
Correct replacement: The target person 我 is placed inside 帮忙 as a possessive modifier (我的) before 忙.
请帮我。
Correct alternative: Using the single-character transitive verb 帮 allows you to place the direct object 我 right after the verb.
你帮了我一个大忙。
Correct: 帮忙 splits to take the aspect marker 了, the indirect object 我, and the modifier phrase 一个大 before 忙.
Usage Summary and Practical Limits
While all four words follow the same core V-O separation pattern, their inner nouns behave slightly differently in daily conversation. In 跳舞 and 帮忙, the second characters (舞 and 忙) can take standard noun classifiers and adjectives, such as 一支舞 (one dance) or 一个大忙 (a big favor). In contrast, 泳 in 游泳 and 步 in 跑步 are much more restricted; you rarely count them with 个 (gè), and instead insert time durations (like 半个小时, half an hour) or verbal measure words (like 游了一次泳, swam once).
- Keep intact after modal verbs and preferences: 想游泳 (want to swim), 喜欢跳舞 (like to dance), 去跑步 (go running), 来帮忙 (come to help).
- For a duration, an internal separated pattern or a suitable repeated-verb pattern can work. Keep the complement beside the verb that carries it, for example 跑步跑了半个小时.
- Never put a person or pronoun directly after 帮忙: split it into 帮...忙 or shorten the verb to 帮.
Frequently asked questions
Can 了 ever go after 游泳, 跳舞, or 跑步 without splitting the word?
Yes, final 了 can follow the whole word, as in 我去跑步了. If you specify duration, you can split inside the word or repeat the verb: 我跑步跑了半个小时. Do not require splitting in every duration sentence.
When should I use 帮忙 intact instead of splitting it?
Use 帮忙 intact when no target person follows the verb—for example, when offering or asking for help in general, such as 你能来帮忙吗? (Can you come help?) or 谢谢你帮忙 (Thank you for helping).
Can I use 泳 or 步 as standalone nouns in modern Chinese?
Distinguish them. 泳 is normally part of words such as 游泳, 蛙泳, or 自由泳, not a freely countable noun by itself. 步 is also a normal step/count unit, as in 走几步 (“walk a few steps”). Its use is not confined to 跑步.
