Using 往 (wǎng) to Indicate Direction and Path in Chinese
The preposition 往 (wǎng) introduces the direction or path of an action, corresponding closely to English words like toward or in the direction of. In standard everyday Chinese, the phrase formed with 往 comes directly before the action verb.

请一直往前走。
往 introduces the direction 前 (ahead) right before the movement verb 走 (walk).
× 请走往前。
Incorrect: In giving directions with 走 and a direction word like 前, 往 + direction cannot follow the verb. Replace with 请往前走。
Corrected example: 请往前走。

Core Function: Introducing Direction and Path
In the HSK 2 grammar outline, 往 is categorized under prepositions (介词) that introduce a direction or a path (引出方向、路径). Note that this level designation reflects the supplied syllabus outline rather than a guarantee of what any individual test center currently administers.
When you describe someone walking, driving, turning, running, or looking in a certain direction, 往 marks the target orientation or route before the main verb appears. Rather than focusing on whether the person has arrived at a final destination, 往 highlights the trajectory of the movement itself.
请一直往前走。
往 introduces the direction 前 (ahead) right before the movement verb 走 (walk).
Sentence Structure and Word Order
Like most prepositional phrases in Mandarin, the combination of 往 plus a direction or place is placed after the subject and before the main action verb. You first establish who is acting, then state the direction they are heading toward, and finally state how they are moving.
你在路口往右拐。
When both a location phrase with 在 and a direction phrase with 往 appear, the location where the action happens (在路口) normally precedes the direction (往右).
If the sentence contains a modal verb, an adverb of manner, or a negative word such as 不 (bù), 没 (méi), or 不要 (búyào), those elements typically come before 往.
小狗不要往外跑。
The negative command 不要 is placed before the prepositional phrase 往外.
Common Direction Words and Nouns After 往
In everyday conversation—especially when giving street directions or guiding someone's physical movement—往 pairs frequently with two types of words.
- Single-syllable or two-syllable direction words (方位词), such as 前 (qián, forward/ahead), 后 (hòu, back), 左 (zuǒ, left), 右 (yòu, right), 上 (shàng, up), 下 (xià, down), 里 (lǐ, inside), and 外 (wài, outside). Unlike several other prepositions, 往 combines naturally with single-syllable direction words without needing 边 (biān) or 面 (miàn), though two-syllable forms are also possible.
- Concrete places or landmarks, such as 火车站 (huǒchēzhàn, train station), 学校 (xuéxiào, school), or 家 (jiā, home), to show the path a person or vehicle is taking.
这辆公共汽车往火车站开。
Here 往 takes a concrete place noun (火车站) to show the route of the bus.
大家往上看。
往 can also guide the direction of sensory or posture verbs like 看 (look).
Useful Contrasts and Usage Limits
Understanding what 往 cannot do helps keep your sentences natural and accurate:
- 往 marks the direction of movement, whether the movement is past, current, or planned. It does not itself say that the destination is reached. 到 can express arrival or reaching a point; choose according to the intended event.
- The concrete direction pattern is the focus here. 往 also occurs in figurative expressions such as 往好处想 (“look on the bright side”). For ordinary speech directed to a person, use a suitable pattern with 对, 向, or 跟; do not treat 往 as a replacement for every “toward/to”.
- In the basic spoken model 往学校走, 往 introduces the direction and 走 supplies the main action. Learn this use separately from compounds and more literary uses of 往; do not infer that the character can never have verbal uses.
Common Learner Mistake: English Word Order
Because English places prepositional phrases after the verb (for example, walk forward or turn toward the left), learners often put the verb first and the 往 + direction phrase second. With everyday verbs like 走 (zǒu, walk), 跑 (pǎo, run), and 拐 (guǎi, turn) + a single-syllable direction word, placing 往 after the verb is ungrammatical.
× 请走往前。
Incorrect: In giving directions with 走 and a direction word like 前, 往 + direction cannot follow the verb. Replace with 请往前走。
Corrected example: 请往前走。
请往前走。
Correct replacement: The prepositional phrase 往前 stands before the verb 走.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to add 边 (biān) or 面 (miàn) after direction words with 往?
No. One of the most convenient features of 往 is that it pairs directly with single-syllable direction words: 往前走 (walk forward), 往左拐 (turn left), and 往上看 (look up) are completely natural. Adding 边 (such as 往左边拐) is also grammatically fine, but the shorter one-syllable version is very common in speech.
Can I use 往 instead of 去 (qù) to say I am going somewhere?
For a basic “go to school” statement, say 我去学校. For the direction-focused model, say 我往学校走 (“I walk toward school”). Do not replace 去 mechanically with bare 往 in this ordinary sentence. Compounds such as 前往 and literary uses are separate patterns.
