Choosing Between Alternatives with (是)……,还是……

Use 还是 to connect alternatives when the speaker is asking which one applies or reporting an unresolved choice. The pattern can form a direct question or appear inside a larger statement; context and punctuation help distinguish them.

Subject 今天 (是) 坐 First transport option ,还是坐 Second transport option ?
Example sentence

我们今天(是)坐地铁,还是坐公共汽车?

Wǒmen jīntiān (shì) zuò dìtiě, háishi zuò gōnggòng qìchē?

Are we taking the subway or the bus today?

A direct choice question. 是 is optional here; it does not change the alternatives.

Meaning: which alternative?

In a direct question, (是)……,还是…… presents alternatives and asks which applies. They may concern a fact, a preference or a planned action. Usually the speaker expects a choice, but an accurate answer can reject both or explain another possibility.

In the question above, the speaker is asking the listener to choose a way to travel today. The alternatives do not have to be physical objects: they can be times, places, actions, or people. Make each alternative fit the same question so the listener can compare them directly.

你明天上午有空,还是下午有空?

Nǐ míngtiān shàngwǔ yǒu kòng, háishi xiàwǔ yǒu kòng?

Are you free tomorrow morning or in the afternoon?

The time phrases are the two alternatives.

Form the alternatives

A useful frame is: subject or shared context + (是) + first alternative + 还是 + second alternative. Put 还是 before the second alternative. The alternatives usually have the same grammatical role, such as two times, two actions, or two possible owners. Shared words can be said once if the meaning remains clear.

  • Before verb alternatives, 是 can act as optional focus framing: 你(是)坐地铁还是坐公共汽车?. When 是 is the ordinary linking verb before a noun or identity, retain it in a complete neutral sentence: 他是老师还是学生?. The outline’s parentheses do not mean that every 是 in every choice question can be deleted.
  • The outline marks 是 as optional with parentheses. In many everyday questions, it is natural to leave it out; the choice is still expressed by 还是.
  • Do not add 是 mechanically to every choice question. Keep the wording concise and parallel.

这本书是你的,还是你朋友的?

Zhè běn shū shì nǐ de, háishi nǐ péngyou de?

Is this book yours or your friend's?

The question asks which person owns the book.

你们想在家吃饭,还是去饭馆吃?

Nǐmen xiǎng zài jiā chīfàn, háishi qù fànguǎn chī?

Would you like to eat at home or go to a restaurant?

The two actions answer the same practical question.

Here, the two alternatives are whether the book belongs to you or to your friend. The repeated 的 keeps the two owner phrases parallel. In the meal example, the actions differ, but both answer the same implied question about where or how to eat.

Ask directly or report an open choice

A direct choice question normally ends with a question mark and can be answered by naming one option, adding a different option, or explaining that neither fits. You do not need to repeat the whole question in your answer. The pattern asks for a choice; it does not by itself require the listener to choose only from the two options if another answer is relevant.

我还没决定是坐火车,还是坐飞机。

Wǒ hái méi juédìng shì zuò huǒchē, háishi zuò fēijī.

I haven't decided yet whether to take the train or the plane.

This is a statement about an unresolved choice, not a direct question.

The same alternatives can occur inside a statement. Here, 我还没决定 (“I have not decided yet”) introduces the choice under consideration, so the sentence reports uncertainty rather than directly asking the listener to choose. The final punctuation and the surrounding words help establish this use.

Contrast with a yes-or-no question

Compare an alternative question with a question that asks whether one proposition is true. With 还是, the speaker offers alternatives and asks which one. With 吗, the speaker asks for yes or no about a single proposition. These forms serve different purposes, so do not replace one with the other unless you intend to change the question.

  • 你坐地铁吗? asks whether you take the subway; a yes-or-no answer is appropriate.
  • 你是坐地铁,还是坐公共汽车? asks which of the two ways you will take.
  • When you want a choice, connect the alternatives with 还是. Do not put 吗 after the first alternative as if it joined the choices.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need 是 before the first alternative?

Not always. An optional focusing 是 before verb alternatives may be omitted. But a sentence such as 他是老师还是学生? uses 是 to link the subject with the noun alternatives; keep it in the full neutral form. Parentheses in the pattern do not license deleting any linking verb wherever it appears.

Does 还是 always mean “or”?

In this pattern, it links the alternatives in a choice question or a statement about an unresolved choice. Interpret it in context rather than treating it as a universal translation for “or.”

Must the answer be one of the two options?

Usually the speaker expects a choice between the offered alternatives, but the listener can clarify, reject both, or name another option when that is more accurate.
