HSK 1 Separable Verbs (离合词): Meaning, Splitting Rules, and Common Mistakes

The HSK 1 separable words in this lesson have a verb–object structure, as in 睡觉 or 说话. They can stay together or separate in suitable patterns. One common pattern inserts aspect markers and a count or duration between the parts; it is not the only way to express duration.

Subject Verb Half Object Half
Example sentence

我们八点上课,爸爸九点上班。

wǒmen bā diǎn shàngkè , bàba jiǔ diǎn shàngbān .

We start class at eight o'clock, and Dad starts work at nine o'clock.

In simple scheduled routines, 上课 and 上班 stay combined.

A common mistake

× 他喜欢说话老师。

tā xǐhuan shuōhuà lǎoshī .

[Incorrect] Intended: He likes talking to the teacher.

Incorrect for “talking with the teacher”: 话 is already the internal object of 说话. Introduce the partner before it with 跟 or 和: 他喜欢跟老师说话。

Corrected example: 他喜欢跟老师说话。

What Are Separable Verbs (离合词)?

When English speakers learn words like 'sleep' or 'talk', they treat them as single, indivisible verbs. In Mandarin, many everyday action words are actually two-character compounds made of an action verb followed by a default noun object. Grammar guides call them 离合词 (líhécí, literally 'separate-combine words'). They act like one word in simple statements, but they separate when you insert grammatical details.

In the supplied HSK 1 grammar outline (2025-11 edition with a 2026-07 implementation label), eight core separable verbs are listed for beginner study. Note that this syllabus reference defines our teaching scope here rather than guaranteeing which exam version a specific test center currently administers.

  • 看病 (kànbìng) — to see a doctor / be treated for an illness (literally: look at + illness)
  • 睡觉 (shuìjiào) — to sleep (literally: sleep + a sleep)
  • 说话 (shuōhuà) — to speak / talk (literally: speak + words)
  • 上课 (shàngkè) — to attend or teach class / start class; 上 here relates to attending or starting a class.
  • 下课 (xiàkè) — to finish class; 下 here marks the end of class.
  • 上班 (shàngbān) — to go to work / start a shift; 上 here relates to being on duty.
  • 下班 (xiàbān) — to get off work / finish a shift; 下 here marks leaving duty.
  • 生病 (shēngbìng) — to fall ill / get sick (literally: develop + illness)

When to Keep Them Together

When you state a general habit, a scheduled time, an intention with a modal verb, or a whole completed change of state at the end of a sentence, the verb and object halves stay together as a single unit.

Subject Verb Half Object Half

我们八点上课,爸爸九点上班。

wǒmen bā diǎn shàngkè , bàba jiǔ diǎn shàngbān .

We start class at eight o'clock, and Dad starts work at nine o'clock.

In simple scheduled routines, 上课 and 上班 stay combined.

弟弟今天生病了,下午去医院看病。

dìdi jīntiān shēngbìng le , xiàwǔ qù yīyuàn kànbìng .

My younger brother got sick today and is going to the hospital this afternoon to see a doctor.

生病了 uses sentence-final 了 to mark a change of state, while 看病 expresses the purpose of going to the hospital.

How and Why They Separate

A common separated pattern puts a verb-level aspect marker after the verb half and a count or modifier before the object half, as in 上了两节课 or 睡了八个小时的觉. Other duration patterns also exist, such as 睡觉睡了八个小时 with the verb repeated. Learn each word’s natural combinations instead of assuming one split rule works identically for all eight.

Subject Verb Half 了 / 过 Duration / Count / Description Object Half

我昨天睡了八个小时的觉。

wǒ zuótiān shuì le bā gè xiǎoshí de jiào.

I slept for eight hours yesterday.

睡 and 觉 separate around 了 and the duration modifier 八个小时的. The optional linking 的 makes the duration-modified object explicit in this example.

她上午上了两节汉语课。

tā shàngwǔ shàng le liǎng jié Hànyǔ kè .

She had two Chinese classes this morning.

上课 splits into 上 and 课 to hold the count (两节) and the subject modifier (汉语).

他上个月生过一次病。

tā shàng gè yuè shēng guò yī cì bìng .

He was sick once last month.

生病 splits to place the experiential particle 过 and the frequency 一次 right after the verb 生.

Common Mistake: Adding an Extra Direct Object

The biggest trap for learners is trying to attach a person or target directly after a separable verb, translating word-for-word from English phrases like 'talk to the teacher'. Because 说话 (shuōhuà) already has the built-in object 话 (words), its object slot is full. You cannot put another noun directly after it.

To include the person you are talking to, introduce them before the verb using a preposition like 跟 (gēn) or 和 (hé), meaning 'with'.

Subject 跟 / 和 Person Verb Half Object Half

× 他喜欢说话老师。

tā xǐhuan shuōhuà lǎoshī .

他喜欢跟老师说话。

tā xǐhuan gēn lǎoshī shuōhuà .

He likes talking with the teacher.

Correct replacement: Use 跟 (with) + person before 说话.

Useful Contrasts and Limits Within the Eight Words

Not all eight separable verbs split with the same frequency in everyday speech. Understanding how they pair up and where their limits lie helps you sound natural:

  • 上课 vs. 下课 and 上班 vs. 下班: Here, 上 marks starting or attending, while 下 marks finishing. It is very common to split 上课 to specify the number or type of classes (上了两节课). In contrast, 下课 and 下班 mark a transition point ('finish class / get off work'), so in daily beginner conversation they usually stay together with a time word or sentence-final 了.
  • 说话 vs. 说: Use 说话 when the focus is the act of talking itself ('speaking with someone'). If you want to name the language or exact message right after the verb—such as 'speak Chinese'—drop the default object 话 and just use the base verb 说 (shuō) plus the new object.
  • 生病 vs. 看病: Both share the object 病 (illness), but 生病 is an involuntary event ('falling ill'), whereas 看病 is a purposeful action ('seeking treatment').

我们四点下课,妈妈六点下班。

wǒmen sì diǎn xiàkè , māma liù diǎn xiàbān .

We finish class at four o'clock, and Mom gets off work at six o'clock.

下课 and 下班 naturally stay together when stating the time an activity ends.

Frequently asked questions

Can I say 说话汉语 to mean 'speak Chinese'?

No. In 说话 (shuōhuà), the second character 话 (words/speech) is already the object of 说 (speak). When you specify 'Chinese', 汉语 replaces 话 as the object, so you simply say 说汉语.

Does 了 always have to go in the middle of a separable verb?

No. A sentence-final 了 can follow the complete word to mark a new situation, as in 生病了. In the separated pattern taught here, aspect 了 follows the verb half: 睡了八个小时的觉. Other structures, including verb repetition, can express duration without the same word-internal pattern.

Do 下课 and 下班 split as often as 睡觉 and 上课?

No. Because 下课 and 下班 describe the moment of finishing class or a work shift rather than an ongoing activity with a length of time, you will mostly use them in their combined form in beginner Chinese.
