Telling the Time in Chinese: Clock Hours and Minutes

Learn the basic patterns for asking and telling clock time in Chinese: name the hour with 点, add minutes with 分, and use 半 for half past. See how the wording fits everyday questions, schedules, and appointments.

hour number 点
Example sentence

现在是早上八点。

Xiànzài shì zǎoshang bā diǎn.

It is eight in the morning now.

早上 identifies the morning. Without it, 八点 needs context to distinguish morning from evening.

A common mistake

× 我们八点分二十上课。

Wǒmen bā diǎn fēn èrshí shàngkè.

Intended meaning: Our class starts at 8:20.

The minute number must precede 分: 二十分. The corrected sentence is 我们八点二十分上课. The hour–minute order itself has not been reversed; the error is placing 分 before 二十.

Corrected example: 我们八点二十分上课。

Ask what time it is

To ask for the clock time, say 现在几点? (What time is it now?). The word 几 asks for an unknown number, and 点 marks the hour. In a conversation about a plan, you can ask 几点? when the context already makes clear that you mean a clock time.

现在几点?

Xiànzài jǐ diǎn?

What time is it now?

几点 asks for the clock time, not a duration in hours.

Say the hour

For an hour on the hour, put the number before 点. This gives a concise answer when the minutes are not needed or are understood from context. If precision matters, include the minutes too.

hour number 点

现在是早上八点。

Xiànzài shì zǎoshang bā diǎn.

It is eight in the morning now.

早上 identifies the morning. Without it, 八点 needs context to distinguish morning from evening.

Add the minutes

For a more exact time, say the hour, then the minute number, then 分. The order is hour first and minutes second. Use this form for class times, appointments, and other schedules where the exact minute matters.

hour number 点 minute number 分

我们八点二十分上课。

Wǒmen bā diǎn èrshí fēn shàngkè。

Our class starts at 8:20.

Read the hour first: 八点, then the minutes: 二十分.

When the minutes begin with zero, 零 can make the time clear: for example, ten oh five. In casual conversation, speakers may shorten or vary a clock expression when the context is clear, so the fully stated form is useful when clarity matters.

会议十点零五分开始。

Huìyì shí diǎn líng wǔ fēn kāishǐ。

The meeting starts at 10:05.

零五分 explicitly gives the five-minute value in 10:05.

Say half past

For half past an hour, say the hour followed by 点半. Here 半 means half an hour, or thirty minutes. It names a particular minute value, while a number followed by 分 can express other minute values.

hour number 点 半

电影九点半开始。

Diànyǐng jiǔ diǎn bàn kāishǐ。

The movie starts at 9:30.

九点半 and 九点三十分 can both name 9:30.

Choose a clear time for the situation

Use the hour-only form for a quick answer when the minute is unnecessary, and use hour plus minutes for a precise meeting or timetable. Use 点半 when the time is exactly half past. These forms express different degrees or types of precision; none should be treated as interchangeable in every situation.

  • A quick answer to the time: state the hour if that is enough.
  • A class or meeting with a specific start minute: state both the hour and minutes.
  • A half-hour time: use the hour followed by 点半.
  • If morning or evening could be unclear, add a suitable time-of-day phrase or explain the event.

In the incorrect example, 分 is placed before the minute number. Move it after 二十: 二十分. Keep the rest of the sentence unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Does 点半 mean half past the hour?

Yes. In a clock time, the hour followed by 点半 means that thirty minutes have passed after that hour.

Do I always need to say 分?

No. 八点二十分 and the shorter 八点二十 can both mean 8:20 in conversation. 分 makes the minute unit explicit; leave 点 before the hour’s minute part. For 8:00, 八点 is enough.

Does a clock time tell me whether it is morning or evening?

Not by itself. Add a time-of-day phrase or clear event context if that distinction matters.
