HSK and CSCA: check both before applying

A Chinese language score and an undergraduate academic assessment answer different admission questions.

HSKReady · 19 Oct 2026

What each requirement is for

HSK is evidence of Chinese-language proficiency. CSCA is the China Scholastic Competency Assessment referenced in current undergraduate admission and scholarship guidance. An HSK result does not automatically replace CSCA, and a CSCA result does not automatically remove a university’s language requirement.

The CSC undergraduate guidance requires applicants to check the assessment subjects with their university and obtain the report before the relevant deadline. This is a route-specific requirement: do not extend an undergraduate rule to every master’s, doctoral or short-term programme.

Match the exact programme

Record the intended intake, degree, teaching language, HSK level and minimum score, and any component-score conditions. Then record the CSCA subjects, accepted session and submission deadline separately. Some programmes also specify English-language evidence or an interview.

The university catalogue includes both 2027 notices and earlier reference intakes. The academic-year label “2026–2027” does not by itself mean autumn 2027 admission. If an official notice contains conflicting thresholds, ask the admissions office to resolve them rather than choosing the lower one.

Build two preparation tracks

Use the confirmed HSK target to plan vocabulary, question-format practice and mock exams. Separately plan the academic subjects and application documents required by your programme. HSKReady supports the HSK examination part of that plan; it does not currently provide CSCA subject preparation.

Before booking an assessment, check the current official CSCA information and the university notice. Do not infer an accepted test date, a subject exemption or a score threshold from a different institution’s example.
