Multi-layer Causal Sentences in Chinese

A multi-layer causal sentence has at least three clauses and two structural levels. An outer reason–result relationship may contain parallel reasons, an inner cause or a sequence of responses. Learn to group the clauses and check both the hierarchy and the reasoning.

Yóuyú gè bùmén de zìduàn dìngyì bù yízhì, tóng yì zhǐbiāo chūxiàn le bùtóng tǒngjì jiéguǒ, yīncǐ tuánduì juédìng xiān tǒngyī kǒujìng, zài chóngxīn jìsuàn.

Because the departments used inconsistent field definitions, the same metric produced different statistical results; the team therefore decided to standardize the criteria first and then recalculate.

Outer cause: the inconsistency and conflicting results motivate the team’s response. Within the reason group, inconsistent definitions explain the conflicting results; within the response, standardization precedes recalculation.

Find the outer cause and the inner relationship

The outline lists 多重因果复句 under sentence types for HSK 7–9; that establishes scope and level, not the examination version currently administered. Multi-layer means at least three clauses and two levels. Identify the largest reason and result groups first, then analyze the relationship inside a larger group. The inner relation may be causal, parallel, additive or sequential; it does not have to repeat the outer relation.

Two parallel reasons can form a group that explains a third clause: [because A and also B] → C. That has an outer causal relation and an inner relation between A and B. A chain can instead make an intermediate result part of a larger explanation. Merely listing three related causes in parallel, or joining two independent causal pairs, does not by itself establish an outer causal hierarchy.

Common ways to connect the clauses

In the field-definition example, group the inconsistent definitions and conflicting statistics as the reason for the response. Inside that group, the former explains the latter. The response in turn contains a sequence: align criteria, then recalculate. 因为 and 由于 introduce reasons, while 因此 introduces the resulting decision. Punctuation helps show these groups, but does not create the underlying relations.

Yóuyú gè bùmén de zìduàn dìngyì bù yízhì, tóng yì zhǐbiāo chūxiàn le bùtóng tǒngjì jiéguǒ, yīncǐ tuánduì juédìng xiān tǒngyī kǒujìng, zài chóngxīn jìsuàn.

The release example uses 之所以……是因为…… for the outer explanation. Inside the reason group, 而且 adds the unconfirmed review to the unstable metrics. Neither reason has to cause the other. In the supplier example, 既然……那么…… takes two stated premises as grounds for a recommended sequence of actions. The inference should remain proportionate: a commitment to deliver on time alone would not establish why delivery was late.

他之所以暂缓发布,是因为关键指标还不稳定,而且负责审核的同事尚未确认。

Tā zhī suǒyǐ zànhuǎn fābù, shì yīnwèi guānjiàn zhǐbiāo hái bù wěndìng, érqiě fùzé shěnhé de tóngshì shàngwèi quèrèn.

He postponed the release because the key metrics were still unstable and, in addition, the colleague responsible for review had not yet confirmed it.

The outer relation explains the postponed release. Within the reason group, 而且 adds a second reason. This gives two levels without requiring one reason to cause the other.

既然合同约定的交付标准没有变,而供应商也承认问题出在排产环节,那么我们就应先检查生产安排,再讨论补救方案。

Jìrán hétong yuēdìng de jiāofù biāozhǔn méiyǒu biàn, ér gōngyìngshāng yě chéngrèn wèntí chū zài páichǎn huánjié, nàme wǒmen jiù yīng xiān jiǎnchá shēngchǎn ānpái, zài tǎolùn bǔjiù fāng’àn.

Since the contract’s delivery standards have not changed and the supplier acknowledges a production-scheduling problem, we should first examine the production schedule and then discuss remedies.

The outer inference supports a proposed response, not a proven attribution of fault. The two premises are parallel; the response contains an ordered pair of actions. A promise of on-time delivery alone would not prove the cause of a delay.

Follow the reasoning, not just the markers

Read a long causal sentence in passes. First, locate the main outcome or conclusion. Next, ask what directly supports it. Then trace any earlier cause that explains how the supporting condition arose. For example, a writer may say that a report limits its conclusion because the sample is narrow; the sample’s limitations explain the caution, while the final clause states the reporting decision. This makes the causal direction easier to see than translating each marker mechanically.

由于样本数量有限,而且受访者主要来自同一行业,研究者没有把这一结果推广到所有企业;因此,报告只提出了一个待验证的解释。

Yóuyú yàngběn shùliàng yǒuxiàn, érqiě shòufǎngzhě zhǔyào láizì tóng yì hángyè, yánjiūzhě méiyǒu bǎ zhè yí jiéguǒ tuīguǎng dào suǒyǒu qǐyè; yīncǐ, bàogào zhǐ tíchū le yí ge dài yànzhèng de jiěshì.

Because the sample was limited in size and the interviewees came mainly from the same industry, the researchers did not generalize this result to all businesses; therefore, the report offered only one explanation still to be tested.

The outer causal relation links the sample limitations to cautious reporting. Inside the reason group, 而且 adds narrow industry coverage to limited sample size; the final 因此 continues the consequence. This is more than a flat list of three causes.

Build and check your own sentence

  • Write the main result or conclusion first, even if you move it later in the finished sentence.
  • Bracket the main reason and result groups, then identify the relationship inside each larger group.
  • Choose markers for their actual job: 因为 and 由于 introduce reasons; 所以 and 因此 introduce consequences; 既然……那么…… frames a premise and its consequence; 由此看来 introduces an inference.
  • Check that each later clause follows from the clauses before it. If a link is only possible or tentative, qualify the conclusion rather than presenting it as certain.
  • Use punctuation to clarify grouping, then check that the sentence has two real structural levels rather than only several causal markers.

The final example is a useful comparison, not an error: one causal pair explains the need to change a process, and a separate pair supports starting the change. The outer connection between those pairs is not explicitly causal. To make an outer causal hierarchy clear, one could instead write 因为旧流程需要重复录入数据,而且新系统已经完成测试,所以团队决定分阶段切换。 Here the inner additive group gives the grounds for the final decision.

这项调整之所以必要,是因为旧流程需要重复录入数据;既然新系统已经完成测试,团队便可以分阶段切换。

Zhè xiàng tiáozhěng zhī suǒyǐ bìyào, shì yīnwèi jiù liúchéng xūyào chóngfù lùrù shùjù; jìrán xīn xìtǒng yǐjīng wánchéng cèshì, tuánduì biàn kěyǐ fēn jiēduàn qiēhuàn.

This adjustment is necessary because the old process requires data to be entered repeatedly; since the new system has completed testing, the team can switch over in stages.

Comparison: these are two causal pairs placed side by side. Their meanings are connected, but the sentence does not explicitly put one pair inside the other. A grammatical long sentence is not automatically an example of an outer causal hierarchy.

A practical final check

Check three things: which groups form the outer cause and result, what relationship appears inside a group, and whether the explanation is credible. Multiple reasons and causal chains can both supply an inner layer. Do not decide the structure just by counting clauses or 因为 markers, and do not confuse a well-formed sentence with a proven causal argument.

Frequently asked questions

Does every multi-clause causal sentence have to form a strict chain?

No. An inner group can contain parallel or additive reasons that jointly explain an outer result. A strict causal chain is another possibility. In either case, show at least two structural levels; a flat list of reasons alone is not enough.

Can 因此 and 所以 always replace each other?

Both can introduce a consequence, but their placement and tone vary with the sentence. Choose the one that fits the clause structure and register; neither marker by itself proves that the preceding idea is a valid cause.

Can a multi-step causal sentence include more than one 因为?

Yes, when the clauses express distinct causal links or clearly organized reasons. Avoid repeating it mechanically: make each reason’s target clear, and use punctuation to help readers follow longer clauses.
