Multi-level hypothetical sentences in Chinese
A multi-layer hypothetical sentence has an outer if–result relationship and at least one relationship inside a clause group. Learn to distinguish this hierarchy from separate conditional pairs and to analyze causes, further conditions and sequences within a hypothetical result.

如果航班延误,那么因为会议不能推迟,我们就改乘高铁。
Outer hypothesis: a flight delay leads to a response. Inside that response, the fixed meeting time explains the choice of transport.

What makes a hypothetical sentence multi-level?
The outline lists 多重假设复句 at levels 7–9. Multi-layer requires at least three clauses and two structural levels. Here a hypothetical condition governs a result group, and that group contains a further cause, condition or sequence. Two complete if–result pairs placed side by side may have an outer parallel relation instead; count relationships and their scope, not the number of 如果 markers. The supplied outline establishes the topic and level, not the examination version currently administered.
A result group can contain a cause or another condition
In the flight example, group the sentence as [if the flight is delayed] → [because the meeting cannot move, we switch to the train]. The outer relationship is hypothetical; the inner relationship is causal. This is different from [if A, do B; if C, do D], whose two pairs may simply be parallel. Such parallel pairs can be grammatical without illustrating an outer hypothetical relationship.

In the nested document example, the first condition sets the situation in which the second if–result link is considered. It has three clauses and two levels. 那么 can make the outer transition explicit, while 就 commonly signals a result. Their presence is not mandatory in every conditional sentence, and their absence does not remove a relationship established by context.
如果资料今晚能整理完,那么如果负责人也确认无误,我们明天就可以提交。
The second condition applies within the first.
Planning through successive conditions
The application example has one outer hypothesis: what happens if approval is refused? Its result consists of two ordered clauses, with the staff completing the materials before the responsible person submits again. The inner relationship is sequential, not a second hypothesis. The different relationship at each level is precisely what must be mapped.
如果这次申请没有通过,工作人员就会补齐材料,负责人随后再提交申请。
The outer condition governs the entire two-step response. Inside that response, completing the materials precedes resubmission; this is an inner sequence.
Counterfactuals and questions
A hypothetical may concern an unrealized past possibility. In the data example, 当时 and the unrealized consequences support that reading. 了 marks aspect and does not by itself mean a past counterfactual. The outer hypothetical result contains an inner causal link: discovering the outdated version would have prevented sending it. Context, rather than a Chinese tense ending, establishes the time and unrealized interpretation.
如果当时我们提前核实了数据,就会发现版本已经过期,也就不会把旧版本发给客户。
The unrealized outer condition governs a result group. Within that group, discovering the outdated version would have prevented sending it. The context supplies the past counterfactual reading; 了 alone does not.
A question can ask whether an inner condition is required under an outer hypothesis. In the supplier example, 如果 sets the possible delay; 只有……才…… asks whether client agreement is necessary in that situation. Do not mistake this for two independent questions or treat the necessary condition as sufficient.
如果供应商今天还不能确认交货日期,那么只有客户同意改期,我们才能继续履行订单吗?
The question concerns a necessary condition within the hypothesized supplier delay. Client agreement is presented as necessary, not as the sole requirement or a guarantee of fulfillment.
A practical reading and writing method
- Find the outer if clause and bracket its entire result group.
- Identify the clauses inside that result group and label their own relationship.
- Check for at least three clauses and two levels; do not count parallel if–result pairs as nested by default.
- Add connectors and punctuation only where they make the intended links easier to follow.
Plan the hierarchy before choosing connectors: first decide what the outer hypothesis governs, then choose the inner relationship that expresses your meaning. A cause, a further condition and a sequence make different claims. Read both levels separately and check that each English or Thai translation preserves the same scope.
Frequently asked questions
Must every conditional clause use 如果 and every result use 就?
No. 如果 and 就 are common and useful signals, but Chinese conditional sentences can omit or vary these connectors. In a longer sentence, make sure the condition-result links remain clear.
Do two 如果 clauses always describe mutually exclusive choices?
No. Parallel clauses give separate condition-result links, but the situations may both occur. Use context to show whether they are alternatives or independent possibilities.
Does 如果 by itself mean that something did not happen?
No. A past counterfactual reading comes from context and other wording, such as references to the past and expressions of an unrealized result.
