假若 / 假使: Building Hypothetical Sentences

假若 and 假使 introduce a possible or imagined situation and connect it to a result, response, or question. This lesson explains their shared pattern, the role of the second clause, and how to choose a fitting context.

Example sentence

假若双方都能按期提交材料,项目就可以在下月启动。

Jiǎruò shuāngfāng dōu néng ànqī tíjiāo cáiliào, xiàngmù jiù kěyǐ zài xià yuè qǐdòng.

If both parties can submit the materials on time, the project can begin next month.

Meaning and scope

假若 (jiǎruò) and 假使 (jiǎshǐ) introduce a situation that the speaker asks the listener to suppose. The second clause then gives a consequence, response, recommendation, or question based on that supposition. In English, the relationship is often expressed with “if …, …” or “suppose …, …”. The outline lists both forms for this simple compound sentence pattern. It does not specify a difference in meaning between them, so this lesson treats them as alternatives in the pattern without claiming that they are interchangeable in every possible context.

The opening clause sets up a condition for reasoning; it does not assert that the situation is true or likely. The second clause should make the speaker’s response clear. Depending on the context, that response may be a prediction, a plan, an instruction, or a question. A hypothetical sentence can discuss a realistic possibility or an imagined case; the marker itself does not tell us how likely the speaker thinks it is.

Build the two clauses

Place 假若 or 假使 before the hypothetical clause, then follow it with a comma and the main clause. The subject may appear in either clause as needed, and it can be omitted when context makes it clear. The result clause does not require a single fixed marker. Words such as 就 (jiù) can make a consequence explicit, while a suggestion or instruction may use a different structure. Choose the second clause to match what you intend to say.

假若/假使 hypothetical clause , result, response, or question
  • First clause: name the situation to suppose.
  • Second clause: state what follows, what someone should do, or what you want to find out.
  • Use punctuation that matches the whole sentence: a statement ends with a full stop; a direct question ends with a question mark.

Choose a response that fits

A consequence can be direct and practical. In the first example, 就 links the partners’ timely submission to the project’s possible start. The sentence presents a conditional plan, not a promise that the project will definitely begin: the result still depends on the situation in the first clause.

假若双方都能按期提交材料,项目就可以在下月启动。

Jiǎruò shuāngfāng dōu néng ànqī tíjiāo cáiliào, xiàngmù jiù kěyǐ zài xià yuè qǐdòng.

If both parties can submit the materials on time, the project can begin next month.

The second clause may instead describe a next step. In the data example, the speaker proposes adjusting the model only after the data remain reliable on review. In the meeting example, the second clause is an instruction. These are both natural ways to respond to a supposition; the response need not be a prediction.

假使这组数据经过复核仍然可靠,我们再据此调整模型。

Jiǎshǐ zhè zǔ shùjù jīngguò fùhé réngrán kěkào, wǒmen zài jùcǐ tiáozhěng móxíng.

If this set of data remains reliable after review, we will adjust the model on that basis.

假若会议临时取消,请尽早通知外地的参会者。

Jiǎruò huìyì línshí qǔxiāo, qǐng jǐnzǎo tōngzhī wàidì de cānhuìzhě.

If the meeting is canceled at short notice, please notify the participants coming from out of town as early as possible.

The same opening pattern can introduce a question. Here the speaker asks what consequence would be most concerning if the listener disagreed. The question mark applies to the complete sentence, and the second clause is a direct question rather than a stated result.

假使你不同意这个方案,最担心的后果是什么?

Jiǎshǐ nǐ bù tóngyì zhège fāng'àn, zuì dānxīn de hòuguǒ shì shénme?

If you disagree with this proposal, what consequence concerns you most?

Separate the condition from the certainty of the outcome

In the deadline example, 恐怕 (“I’m afraid”) makes the result a cautious forecast under the stated supposition. It does not say that missing the review is possible only under that condition: other causes could also produce the same outcome. 假若 and 假使 introduce the condition; words in the main clause determine whether the response is cautious, definite, a promise, or a question.

假若我们现在才开始整理档案,恐怕赶不上月底的审查。

Jiǎruò wǒmen xiànzài cái kāishǐ zhěnglǐ dàng'àn, kǒngpà gǎn bù shàng yuèdǐ de shěnchá.

If we only start organizing the files now, I’m afraid we will miss the review at the end of the month.

Use the pattern in context

Choose a situation to suppose and a response connected to it. The main clause may give a plan, advice, a prediction or a question. A conditional promise is also possible: 假若你明天来,我一定等你 (“If you come tomorrow, I will definitely wait for you”). The condition marker does not itself settle the result’s certainty; 一定 supplies that commitment under the condition. Do not confuse “if A, then B” with “B can happen only if A.”

Frequently asked questions

Do 假若 and 假使 mean different things here?

Both can mean “if” or “suppose” in this frame. They introduce an imagined condition, rather than asserting it as a fact. Either fits the shared pattern here; learn the natural wording of each sentence rather than assuming every expression with one can always take the other.

Must the result clause contain 就?

No fixed result marker is specified for this pattern. 就 can make a consequence explicit, but a proposal, instruction, or question may be expressed without it.

Does 假若 or 假使 mean the situation is likely?

The marker introduces a supposition; by itself it does not state how likely the situation is or guarantee the result.
