Verb + 个 + X: 问个明白, 玩个痛快
Use verb + 个 + a result, degree or duration expression to make an action vivid: ask until things are clear, enjoy yourself fully, or talk on and on. Distinguish these expressions from ordinary noun-classifier phrases such as 找个地方.

这件事我一定要问个明白。
明白 describes the desired clarity. It is not a single object being counted.

The frame and its usual effect
The outline’s broad label is 动词+个X. A key use puts a result or degree description after 个: 问个明白 and 玩个痛快. X is not limited to nouns. It can also describe continuation, as in 讲个没完, or give a duration, as in 休息个十分钟. The effect depends on the whole expression; 个 is not a universal marker meaning “just a little.”
Compare 问个明白 with 问个问题. In the first, 明白 describes the clarity sought through asking. In the second, 问题 is the thing asked about and 个 functions with a noun. Both can be natural, but they do not justify the same analysis. A written V个X formula alone does not tell you what role X has.
What can fill X
Check what X contributes. 明白 and 痛快 describe a result or degree, 没完 describes continuation, and 十分钟 measures duration. Learn natural combinations in context; do not attach 个 mechanically to any verb and any adjective or noun. Ask what the whole expression means, not just which word class follows 个.
这件事我一定要问个明白。
明白 describes the desired clarity. It is not a single object being counted.
他一开口就讲个没完。
没完 describes the excessive continuation of the talking; this is not a small, casual quantity.
咱们休息个十分钟再走吧。
十分钟 is a duration phrase. 个 gives the suggestion a conversational feel; it is not a noun naming an object of 休息.
When it sounds appropriate
The expression often sounds conversational and vivid. 玩个痛快 can be enthusiastic, 讲个没完 can be critical, and 休息个十分钟 can sound like an informal suggestion. The effect is not always softening, and an intensive phrase does not necessarily describe an event already completed. 想玩个痛快 expresses a wish.
考试结束了,大家想玩个痛快。
痛快 expresses a satisfying degree of enjoyment. 想 shows that this is a wish, not an already achieved result.
我想找个安静的地方看书。
A valid contrast: 个 here goes with the noun phrase 安静的地方 and can be understood as an unstated 一 + classifier. Do not use it to prove that X after every verb must be a noun.
A useful boundary
The adjacent outline point 动词+得个… is related but has the complement marker 得 as well, as in 弄得个一团糟. Do not insert 得 into every V个X expression or interpret 个 as always counting one noun. The outline locates this lesson’s scope and level; it does not verify the exam version currently offered by a particular centre.
Frequently asked questions
Must X after 个 be a noun?
No. 明白 in 问个明白 describes a result, and 痛快 in 玩个痛快 describes a satisfying degree. A noun phrase in 找个地方 is a different, ordinary classifier use.
Does 个 always make an action sound small or casual?
No. 讲个没完 can emphasize excessive continuation, while 玩个痛快 can intensify enjoyment. Read the following expression and context.
Does the frame mean that the action is already finished?
No. 想玩个痛快 states a wish, and 休息个十分钟再走吧 is a suggestion. Time and completion come from the whole sentence.
