动不动就……: Happening Too Readily or Too Often

动不动就 presents an action or event as happening readily or repeatedly, often with the speaker’s sense that it happens too easily. Learn the frame, its conversational force, and when neutral frequency wording is a better fit.

subject 动不动就 recurring action or event
Example sentence

Meaning and pragmatic force

动不动就 describes something that happens easily, readily, or repeatedly, sometimes in response to a small trigger. The speaker commonly implies that the frequency or quickness is excessive, irritating, surprising, or otherwise worth commenting on. The pattern therefore conveys an attitude as well as recurrence. That attitude depends on context: it may sound like criticism, concern, or self-deprecating recognition.

The fixed frame

The basic frame here is subject + 动不动就 + predicate. Treat 动不动 as an adverbial expression, not a literal question about moving. 就 is common in this frame, but 动不动 can also be followed directly by a predicate: 他动不动发脾气. A subject identifies whose behavior or which events are being described. The following predicate supplies the recurring action, reaction or event and can include an object or complement.

subject 动不动就 recurring action or event

The subject can also be established earlier in the sentence or from context. The predicate need not name a deliberate human action: a machine that repeatedly crashes or a person who keeps forgetting something can both fit. The pattern does not specify an exact number of occurrences; it characterizes a recurring tendency or a readily triggered event.

Examples in context

他动不动就打断别人。

Tā dòng bu dòng jiù dǎduàn biérén.

He keeps interrupting people at the slightest opportunity.

The phrasing suggests that the speaker sees his interruptions as too frequent or too readily made.

这台电脑动不动就死机,影响了整个团队的进度。

Zhè tái diànnǎo dòng bu dòng jiù sǐjī, yǐngxiǎng le zhěnggè tuánduì de jìndù.

This computer keeps crashing at the slightest provocation, affecting the whole team’s progress.

The subject is a device, and the predicate describes a recurring event rather than a deliberate action.

她动不动就说要辞职。

Tā dòng bu dòng jiù shuō yào cízhí.

She keeps saying she wants to resign.

No trigger is stated. The speaker presents her recurring talk of resignation as too readily made.

项目刚有一点进展,他动不动就把功劳归给自己。

Xiàngmù gāng yǒu yìdiǎn jìnzhǎn, tā dòng bu dòng jiù bǎ gōngláo guī gěi zìjǐ.

As soon as the project makes a little progress, he is quick to take credit for it.

The clause gives a small trigger, while the main clause uses 动不动就 to convey a critical view of the repeated response.

我最近动不动就忘记带门卡,看来得换个地方放。

Wǒ zuìjìn dòng bu dòng jiù wàngjì dài ménkǎ, kànlái děi huàn ge dìfang fàng.

Lately I keep forgetting to bring my access card; I guess I need to put it somewhere else.

The speaker applies the pattern to their own habit, so the tone can be self-critical rather than accusatory.

Register and useful contrasts

This pattern is common in conversational Chinese and can also appear in informal narration or commentary. Because it often carries a judgment, use it thoughtfully when describing another person, especially in a formal or tactful exchange. It is appropriate when you want to convey that a behavior or event seems to happen too readily or repeatedly; a neutral frequency expression is safer when you only want to report how often something occurs.

  • Use 经常 or 常常 for a more neutral statement that something happens often. These words do not, by themselves, suggest that it happens too easily.
  • Use 总是 when you mean that something happens all the time or consistently. It can sound emphatic, but it does not automatically convey the same sense of a low trigger or excessive readiness as 动不动就.
  • Use 动不动就 when that readiness or notable recurrence is part of your point. In example 05, the speaker’s comment that a change may be needed makes the repeated forgetting personally relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Can 动不动就 simply mean “often”?

It can describe recurrence, but it usually adds the idea that something happens readily or more often than the speaker considers normal. For a neutral report of frequency, 经常 or 常常 is usually a better fit.

Does 动不动就 give an exact frequency?

No. It expresses a recurring tendency or readiness to act, not a precise count or schedule.

Must a trigger appear before 动不动就?

No. A trigger may be understood without being stated, as in the first and third examples. The fourth supplies a small amount of project progress as a trigger.
