不知…是好/才好: not knowing what to do
This advanced fixed pattern presents a speaker as unsure which action, option, or response would be best. Learn how its frame works, when it sounds natural, and how it differs from simply asking for information.

事情突然有了变化,我不知如何是好。
如何 supplies the unresolved action or response, and 是好 is the ending. The 是 is not introducing an 是…还是… choice here.

Meaning and pragmatic force
不知X是/才好 expresses uncertainty about what one should choose, say, or do. The speaker is not merely missing a fact: they are weighing possibilities and cannot readily decide which would be suitable or best. Depending on the context, the pattern can sound reflective, hesitant, or mildly troubled. It does not by itself prove that the situation is serious; surrounding details and tone determine how strong the concern feels.
Build the fixed frame
Read the outline’s 是/才好 as two endings sharing 好: 不知X是好 or 不知X才好. Compare 不知如何是好 and 不知怎么办才好. X usually contains the unresolved how, what, which, or whether decision. A plain action with no unresolved choice is not enough. An 是…还是… choice can occur inside X, but that 是 is a separate grammatical role, not the suffix 是好.
- X may be a question clause that names an unknown choice, such as which route to take or which problem to address first.
- X may contain an explicit choice, as in the examples with explaining in person or writing first. Those examples still use 才好 as their ending.
- A modal such as 该 can appear inside the question clause when the speaker is considering what ought to be done. It is not a required part of the fixed frame.
Examples in context
事情突然有了变化,我不知如何是好。
如何 supplies the unresolved action or response, and 是好 is the ending. The 是 is not introducing an 是…还是… choice here.
不知是当面解释,还是先写一封信才好。
是……还是…… presents contrasting possible responses.
不知是现在答应,还是等拿到完整资料以后再决定才好。
The options include a longer second action; the speaker is weighing timing as well as choice.
面对这种情况,我们不知该先解决哪一个问题才好。
该 places the question within what the speakers think ought to be done.
The first example demonstrates 是好 after 如何. The other three finish with 才好. In the two alternatives examples, the initial 是 belongs to 是…还是…, while the final 才好 evaluates the unresolved choice. In the final example, 该 helps express what should be prioritized.
When to use it and what to contrast
This can appear in conversation or narrative when someone is uncertain how to act or respond. 不知 is more compact and often more literary than 不知道, but 不知道选哪个才好 is natural in an everyday choice. The advanced outline level is not a rule that the whole pattern belongs only in formal situations.
Compare 我不知道车几点开 with 我不知明天几点出发才好. The first lacks a fact about the departure time; the second concerns choosing a suitable time to leave tomorrow. 才好 or 是好 contributes the search for an appropriate response. The sentence may be followed by a direct request for advice.
- First ask whether the sentence is about deciding what to do, say, or choose. If it is only about an unknown fact, this pattern may not fit the intended meaning.
- Put the unresolved choice or question in X. Use 是……还是…… when presenting explicit alternatives.
- Use 是好 or 才好 to close the unresolved-choice expression, and check that the context supports a search for an appropriate action or response.
Frequently asked questions
What does 是/才好 mean in the outline notation?
It abbreviates two endings: 是好 and 才好. 不知如何是好 uses the first; 不知选哪条路线才好 uses the second. Do not insert an arbitrary action between 是 and 才好. An 是…还是… choice inside the sentence is a different role for 是.
Can X contain more than two options?
The frame concerns an unresolved choice, and the alternatives construction can present options for comparison. Keep the choices clear; the outline does not specify a fixed maximum.
Does 才好 always translate as “would be best”?
No single English translation fits every context. It signals that the speaker is considering what would be suitable or preferable, so translations such as “what should I do?” or “which would be better?” may sound more natural.
