承前省略: Carrying Shared Information Across Sentences
承前省略 (chéngqián shěnglüè) is context-based omission that lets a later sentence leave out information already established earlier. Learn to track the referent, recover the omitted meaning, and judge when repetition or a clear noun is more useful.

调查员先核对了三家门店的记录。随后又联系各店负责人,确认了库存数字不一致的原因。核查结束后,将发现的问题写进报告。
The second and third Chinese sentences leave the investigator unspoken as subject. Restore 调查员 before 随后 and after 核查结束后. The managers are objects of 联系, and no competing actor takes over the investigation.

What carries forward
The outline places 承前省略 (chéngqián shěnglüè) under discourse and sentence groups at HSK 7–9 level. The label describes a relationship across sentences: a later sentence leaves something unspoken because the preceding discourse has already made it recoverable. The point is not simply that Chinese sentences can omit a subject. Ask instead what the reader has just been told, which participant or idea remains active, and whether the next sentence continues that information.

Recover the missing link
The first passage actually leaves out 调查员 in later sentences: [调查员]随后又联系…… and 核查结束后,[调查员]将…… . The brackets show an analytical restoration, not text that must be inserted. The managers remain objects of 联系, so the investigator is still the active actor. Do not mechanically delete a subject after a change of topic. For example, after 另外两家店的库存数字虽然准确, an unexpressed subject of 发现 may be harder to recover; naming 调查员 there can be clearer.
- Read the preceding sentence and identify the current actor, object, or situation.
- Check whether the next clause continues that same participant or event.
- Restore the likely omitted material mentally. If more than one reading fits, repeat or name the referent.
- Use nearby links such as 因此 (yīncǐ, therefore) and 但 (dàn, but) to follow the reasoning; these words signal relations, while context identifies what is omitted.
气象部门连续观测了六周的降雨量,并将数据与往年同期比较。发现今年雨季开始得较晚,因此建议农户暂缓播种。
The weather department is omitted before 发现 and 建议 in the Chinese. The rainy season is the subject only of the embedded finding, not the adviser. This is a fictional passage illustrating reference, not a real agricultural advisory.
How omission shapes a passage
In the rainfall passage, the weather department remains the source of the observation, finding and recommendation. The second sentence omits that subject before 发现 and 建议. 今年雨季 begins the finding embedded after 发现; it is not the adviser. 因此 links the finding to the recommendation but does not identify an omitted actor on its own. Restore the department mentally and check the meaning at both places.
A useful editing pass is to underline the main participant in each sentence, then mark which later mentions repeat an already active participant. Test each proposed omission by reading the passage without the repeated word or phrase. If the connection still feels immediate and the logic stays intact, omission may improve flow. If the reader must search backward, or could assign an action to a different participant, keep the noun or pronoun. Strategic repetition can itself preserve clarity in a long or information-dense passage.
这项新规规定,申请人必须提交完整的预算说明。提交材料后,还要等待部门审核。只有收到书面通知,才能开始采购。
申请人 is recoverable before submitting, waiting, receiving and purchasing. 部门 is the reviewer and 新规 names the rule; neither replaces the applicant as the person receiving notice. Written notice is presented as a necessary condition, not proof that every other requirement is satisfied.
Continuity is not automatic
The regulation passage carries the applicant forward without repeating the noun in each later sentence. The rule and reviewing department are also mentioned, but the roles of submitting, waiting and receiving notice make the applicant recoverable. In the mediator passage, proposing and agreeing belong to different participants. Naming the mediator and the parties keeps the subject changes clear. At the same time, the object of 接受 is omitted because the proposed compromises are already known.
调解员先提出了两种折中方案,但双方都没有接受。调解员随后提出一项调整交货时间的新方案,双方这次同意先试行一个月。
Contrast: the mediator proposes, while the two parties accept or reject. The repeated mediator makes the renewed actor clear after 双方. In 没有接受, the object 两种折中方案 is omitted; 试行 also recovers the new plan as object. Subject and object omission must be analyzed separately.
A practical editing check
- Draft the connected passage with its participants stated clearly.
- Mark each later mention that refers to an already introduced participant or idea.
- Try omitting one repeated mention at a time, especially where the same participant continues an action or conclusion.
- Reread for reference, contrast, and cause-and-effect. Restore the mention wherever the reader could misunderstand who did what or how the ideas connect.
Frequently asked questions
What can be omitted in 承前省略?
A later sentence may leave unspoken a participant or piece of information that the preceding discourse has already made recoverable. Identify what is active in the passage and check that the intended link is clear.
Does the subject always have to be repeated?
No. A repeated subject can sometimes be omitted when the same participant remains clear. Repetition is useful when the reference is uncertain, the passage is dense, or the subject changes.
Does any omission across a sentence boundary count as 承前省略?
For this lesson, the useful test is whether preceding context supplies the omitted information. A sentence boundary by itself does not explain what the reader is expected to recover.
