What logical order does
Logical order links sentences through the relationship between their ideas. A paragraph may present a claim and support it, describe a problem and respond to it, or state a result and explain its cause. The reader should be able to tell why each sentence follows the one before it.
This lesson follows the supplied outline point for levels 7–9, which names logical order within the sentence-group category. It does not establish which exam version is currently administered at any test centre. The examples and explanations here are original teaching material.
Common ways ideas develop
- Claim → evidence → inference: present a position, give supporting observations, then draw a conclusion. 由此看来 can mark an inference based on the preceding evidence.
- Cause → result: state why something happened, then show its consequence. 因此 can signal a result; it should point back to a reason that has actually been stated.
- Problem → response → outcome: establish a need or difficulty, describe a response, then explain what changed.
- Point → qualification → explanation: acknowledge a limitation or opposing circumstance, then show why the main position still holds. 尽管如此 signals that the next point holds despite the preceding one; it does not erase that point.
Read each passage as a chain

A problem leads to a participatory response and then an outcome. The passage develops a practical rationale; it does not claim that the new use solved every local need.
How to form a coherent passage
- Write the central point you want the paragraph to make.
- For each next sentence, identify its job: reason, consequence, evidence, inference, qualification, response, or outcome.
- Place information where the relationship becomes clear. A conclusion usually follows the evidence it summarizes; a response needs a stated problem to answer.
- Add a connector only when it clarifies the intended relationship. A word such as 因此 cannot make unrelated facts into a cause and result.
- Read the passage without its connectors. If the link is still understandable, the information flow is doing useful work; if not, supply the missing reason or evidence.
Useful contrasts and limits
Logical order concerns how ideas relate, not simply which event happened first. A passage can mention events in time order and still be logically weak if it never explains why one matters to the next. Conversely, a cause-and-result passage need not describe a sequence of events over time. Keep this point focused on relations among sentences; the outline lists time order, spatial order, topic extension, and topic shift as separate neighboring points.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a connector in every sentence?
No. Use one when it clarifies a relationship that might otherwise be unclear. Repeated connectors can make a passage heavy, and an unsupported connector can mislead readers.
Can 因此 introduce any sentence that follows a fact?
No. It signals a result or conclusion supported by what came before. If the next sentence is merely another fact, a cause-and-result connector may suggest a relationship that is not there.
Does 尽管如此 mean the first point is unimportant?
No. It acknowledges the preceding circumstance and signals that the following point holds despite it. Both parts remain relevant.
