Advanced Chinese Conjunctions: 加之, 乃至, and 且 (HSK 7-9)

In formal Chinese writing, 加之 introduces a supplementary cause or condition, 乃至 marks an escalation in scope or degree across items or clauses, and 且 links parallel predicates or clauses.

Reason A ,加之 Reason B , Result clause
Example sentence

原有设备老化,加之维护资金不足,生产效率明显下降。

Yuányǒu shèbèi lǎohuà, jiāzhī wéihù zījīn bùzú, shēngchǎn xiàolǜ míngxiǎn xiàjiàng.

The existing equipment is aging, and maintenance funding is also insufficient; together, these have caused a marked drop in production efficiency.

加之 links two causal clauses that together explain the final result.

A common mistake

× 会议邀请了教授且研究员参加讨论。

Huìyì yāoqǐng le jiàoshòu qiě yánjiūyuán cānjiā tǎolùn.

Intended: The conference invited professors and researchers to join the discussion.

For the intended list of two groups, 和 or 以及 is the normal coordinator. Professor and researcher are being listed as invited groups, not linked as predicate qualities.

Corrected example: 会议邀请了教授以及研究员参加讨论。

Syllabus Scope and Functional Overview

In the HSK 7-9 grammar outline, the conjunctions 加之, 乃至, and 且 are grouped under conjunctions that connect words or phrases as well as clauses or sentences. While all three appear predominantly in formal written Chinese, academic prose, news reports, and official documents, they do not share the same syntactic flexibility or logical relationship.

  • 加之 connects clauses or nominalized cause phrases to add a supplementary reason leading to an outcome.
  • 乃至 connects a further item, reach or consequence on a scale supplied by the context. This is often wider scope or greater severity, but it can also reach a more local level.
  • 且 connects parallel adjectives, verb phrases, or clauses to express simultaneous qualities or progressive statements.

加之: Adding a Supplementary Factor or Cause

加之 means in addition to this or compounded by. It introduces a secondary factor that combines with a previously stated situation to produce a specific result. Unlike general additive words that can link any two facts, 加之 almost always operates within a cause-and-effect framework. The final clause typically states a conclusion, difficulty, or notable change resulting from the combined factors.

Reason A ,加之 Reason B , Result clause

原有设备老化,加之维护资金不足,生产效率明显下降。

Yuányǒu shèbèi lǎohuà, jiāzhī wéihù zījīn bùzú, shēngchǎn xiàolǜ míngxiǎn xiàjiàng.

The existing equipment is aging, and maintenance funding is also insufficient; together, these have caused a marked drop in production efficiency.

加之 links two causal clauses that together explain the final result.

Although 加之 most commonly sits between two clauses, the element immediately following it can also be a compact noun phrase or four-character phrase that represents an event or condition.

山区地形复杂,加之连日暴雨,救援工作面临极大困难。

Shānqū dìxíng fùzá, jiāzhī liánrì bàoyǔ, jiùyuán gōngzuò miànlín jídà kùnnan.

The mountainous terrain is complex, and with the addition of days of torrential rain, rescue operations face immense difficulties.

加之 introduces a four-character nominal phrase acting as a secondary cause.

乃至: Further Reach on a Contextual Scale

乃至 means “and even / as far as.” It marks a further point on a contextually meaningful scale. That may be a wider field, a more serious consequence, or a more local level reached by an influence. It need not connect three items, and its order cannot be judged from geographic size alone.

Element A 、 Element B 乃至 Escalated element C

这一发现对医学界、生物学界乃至整个科学界都有深远影响。

Zhè yī fāxiàn duì yīxuéjiè, shēngwùxuéjiè nǎizhì zhěnggè kēxuéjiè dōu yǒu shēnyuǎn yǐngxiǎng.

This discovery has a profound impact on the medical community, the biological research community, and even the entire scientific community.

乃至 escalates from specific disciplines to the entire scientific field.

Between clauses, 乃至 can introduce a further consequence. In the erosion example, the progression is from reduced farm output to a threat to people’s living environment. The increase in severity comes from this example, not from an obligation to describe only bad outcomes.

若不及时治理,水土流失将导致农田减产,乃至危及下游居民的生存环境。

Ruò bù jíshí zhìlǐ, shuǐtǔ liúshī jiāng dǎozhì nóngtián jiǎnchǎn, nǎizhì wēijí xiàyóu jūmín de shēngcún huánjìng.

If not treated in time, soil erosion will lead to reduced agricultural output, and even endanger the living environment of downstream residents.

乃至 connects two verb-phrase clauses in order of increasing severity.

且: Formal Coordination of Predicates and Clauses

且 connects compatible predicate elements or clauses in compact written expression. Two-syllable pairings such as 简明且高效 are useful, but one-syllable adjectives also work, as in 大且圆. Choose a phrase whose meanings and grammatical roles fit together, rather than counting syllables.

Adjective/Verb A 且 Adjective/Verb B

研究团队提出了一个简明且高效的解决方案。

Yánjiū tuánduì tíchū le yī gè jiǎnmíng qiě gāoxiào de jiějué fāng’àn.

The research team proposed a concise and efficient solution.

且 connects two disyllabic adjectives modifying a single noun.

At the clause level, 且 follows a comma to add a supplementary or parallel statement, functioning as a concise written counterpart to 而且.

Clause A ,且 Clause B

合同条款规定得十分明确,且双方代表均已签字确认。

Hétong tiáokuǎn guīdìng de shífēn míngquè, qiě shuāngfāng dàibiǎo jūn yǐ qiānzì quèrèn.

The contract terms are stipulated very clearly, and representatives from both sides have signed to confirm.

且 connects two independent clauses in formal written Chinese.

Useful Contrasts and Common Learner Mistakes

  • 加之 vs. 加上: Both introduce an additional reason, but 加上 is neutral and common in everyday speech, whereas 加之 belongs to formal written registers and cannot take aspect particles or objects like a literal verb.
  • 乃至 vs. 甚至: both can mark a further or more striking item. 乃至 commonly links the relevant elements in written progression; 甚至 can also stand before a predicate, often with 都 or 也. Learn their placement in whole sentences rather than treating every occurrence of 甚至 as a conjunction interchangeable with 乃至.
  • 且 vs. 和 / 以及: for a straightforward list of groups, such as professors and researchers, 和 or 以及 is the natural choice. 且 is useful for linking predicate qualities or statements; do not copy it mechanically into every English “and” or Thai “และ” list.

In the invitation example, the intended meaning is that two groups are invited. Use 和 or 以及 to make the list clear. This is not a question of whether a noun refers to something concrete or abstract; it is the structure and intended coordination that matter.

会议邀请了教授以及研究员参加讨论。

Huìyì yāoqǐng le jiàoshòu yǐjí yánjiūyuán cānjiā tǎolùn.

The conference invited professors and researchers to join the discussion.

Correct replacement: 以及 properly coordinates two noun phrases in a formal register.

The two policy sentences below are not a wrong-and-right pair. One moves from a global perspective down to the local level; the other expands from local to global. Both can express meaningful progression with 乃至. Choose the order that matches the argument being made.

这项政策关系到全球、国家乃至地方的经济发展。

Zhè xiàng zhèngcè guānxì dào quánqiú, guójiā nǎizhì dìfāng de jīngjì fāzhǎn.

This policy concerns economic development at global and national levels, and even at the local level.

This order can emphasize how far the policy’s effects reach down to the local level. A smaller geographic unit is not inherently incompatible with 乃至.

这项政策关系到地方、国家乃至全球的经济发展。

Zhè xiàng zhèngcè guānxì dào dìfāng, guójiā nǎizhì quánqiú de jīngjì fāzhǎn.

This policy relates to local, national, and even global economic development.

This alternative expands the focus from local to national and then global development. It uses the same three levels with a different direction of emphasis.

Frequently asked questions

Can 加之 be used at the very beginning of a sentence?

It usually follows a comma after the first reason. In longer formal passages, it can occasionally start a new sentence right after a period to add a secondary factor to the preceding sentence, functioning like 'Furthermore, given that...'.

Can 且 link single-character adjectives?

Yes. 大且圆 is a natural written combination of one-syllable adjectives. 简明且高效 is also natural with two-syllable words. 又大又圆 gives another common way to express the two qualities; syllable count alone does not rule 且 out.

Does 乃至 require at least three items in a list?

No. A乃至B can directly link two elements. B marks a further reach or step on the scale relevant to the context. A three-part list such as A、B乃至C is another possible pattern, not a minimum requirement.
