宁可 / 宁愿……,也不……: Expressing a Firm Preference

宁可……,也不…… and 宁愿……,也不…… present a deliberate choice: the speaker accepts or prefers one course of action rather than the alternative, which is rejected. Learn the shared frame, the common variants in its second clause, and the contrast with a neutral list of options.

宁可/宁愿 preferred action or outcome ,也不 rejected action or outcome
Example sentence

我宁可多花一点时间,也不草率地提交这份报告。

Wǒ níngkě duō huā yìdiǎn shíjiān, yě bù cǎoshuài de tíjiāo zhè fèn bàogào.

I would rather spend a little more time than submit this report carelessly.

The speaker accepts the extra time and rejects a careless submission.

Meaning: a preference with a rejected alternative

This pattern presents two possible actions or outcomes as unequal. The first clause names the option the subject is prepared to accept or prefers; the second says what the subject would rather not do or accept. The overall message is close to “would rather do A than do B.” The choice often responds to a real constraint, risk, or value judgment, so the first option need not be attractive in itself. The speaker is saying that it is preferable to the second one.

The outline lists 宁可/宁愿……,也不…… as a choice-pattern point at levels 7–9. The examples and explanations here are original teaching material. This level label identifies the outline’s scope; it does not establish which examination version a particular centre currently administers.

The report may take longer, but the speaker chooses care over submitting careless work. The second clause identifies the rejected course, not a second equally welcome option.

Formation and wording

宁可/宁愿 preferred action or outcome ,也不 rejected action or outcome

Put the preferred action or outcome after 宁可 or 宁愿. After 也不, give the rejected action or outcome. The subject usually applies to both clauses, and it may be stated once before the first clause when the reference remains clear. Keep the two parts parallel enough that the reader can compare them easily: an action with an action, or an outcome with an outcome.

  • 宁可 and 宁愿 both introduce the preferred option in this pattern. They are close in meaning here; the choice between them is often stylistic or conventional, so avoid treating one as universally more formal or stronger.
  • The second clause can use 也不 with a verb, as in 也不想; it can also use a negative willingness or refusal expression such as 也不愿意 or 也不肯. Match the wording to the intended attitude.
  • Use 也不 to mark rejection of the second option. A sentence with a different negative expression can still be grammatical, but it may convey a different attitude or degree of willingness.

她宁愿暂时留在原来的岗位,也不想为了升职放弃自己的研究。

Tā níngyuàn zànshí liú zài yuánlái de gǎngwèi, yě bù xiǎng wèile shēngzhí fàngqì zìjǐ de yánjiū.

She would rather stay in her current position for now than give up her research for a promotion.

The first option is her preference; the second is what she does not want to do.

我们宁可改乘晚一点的火车,也不愿意冒险赶那班只剩十分钟的车。

Wǒmen níngkě gǎichéng wǎn yìdiǎn de huǒchē, yě bú yuànyì màoxiǎn gǎn nà bān zhǐ shèng shí fēnzhōng de chē.

We would rather take a later train than risk rushing for the train that leaves in just ten minutes.

The later train is acceptable compared with the rejected risk.

When the pattern is appropriate

Use this construction when you want to make a choice sound deliberate, especially when rejecting the second possibility matters to your point. It fits statements about trade-offs in work, travel, negotiation, and personal priorities. It can explain a decision or state a principle. The speaker need not be choosing at the exact moment of speaking; the sentence can describe a settled preference or a likely response to a situation.

他宁愿接受较低的报价,也不肯在合同里加入无法兑现的承诺。

Tā níngyuàn jiēshòu jiào dī de bàojià, yě bù kěn zài hétong lǐ jiārù wúfǎ duìxiàn de chéngnuò.

He would rather accept a lower offer than agree to include a promise in the contract that cannot be kept.

也不肯 conveys refusal to make the promise in this context.

这支队伍宁可少接一个项目,也不愿意让质量控制流于形式。

Zhè zhī duìwǔ níngkě shǎo jiē yí ge xiàngmù, yě bú yuànyì ràng zhìliàng kòngzhì liúyú xíngshì.

The team would rather take on one fewer project than let quality control become a mere formality.

The team gives up some work to avoid the outcome it rejects.

A useful contrast and a practical check

Before using the frame, ask: “Which option do I prefer or accept, and which one am I ruling out?” Put the preferred option first. Then check that the second clause really expresses rejection. If you only mean that two outcomes are possible, this pattern may overstate your meaning. Also check that both clauses concern the same decision and that the subject is clear.

  • 宁可 / 宁愿 marks the subject’s preference, which need not be the narrator’s own view. It does not say that the first choice is easy or ideal.
  • 也不想 focuses on not wanting to do the second action. 也不愿意 likewise expresses unwillingness; 也不肯 can sound like refusal or unwillingness to yield. Choose according to the context.
  • Use this lesson’s frame to express A over rejected B. The related pattern 与其……,宁愿/宁可…… orders its alternatives differently and is a separate outline point; it is not covered as a target pattern here.

For example, in the report sentence, additional time is acceptable because submitting careless work is rejected. In the travel sentence, taking a later train is preferred because rushing for the nearly departing train is not. In each case, the two clauses describe one decision, and the second makes the trade-off clear.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a difference between 宁可 and 宁愿 here?

In this pattern, both introduce the preferred option and are close in meaning. Usage can vary by context, so learn natural examples rather than assuming one is always more formal, emphatic, or correct.

Must the second clause contain only 不?

No. The pattern uses 也不 to reject the second option, and the clause may continue with wording such as 想、愿意, or 肯. These expressions add shades of wanting, willingness, or refusal.

Is this a question pattern?

It is commonly used in statements that express or explain a preference. A speaker can use such a statement during a conversation, but the frame itself does not turn the sentence into a question.
