Concessive contrast with X(倒)是X(了),……
This pattern grants that something is indeed true or has happened, then adds a qualification, limitation, or contrasting point. Learn how repetition works, when 倒 and 了 appear, and how the second clause completes the contrast.

Meaning: acknowledge, then qualify
This pattern first acknowledges a fact, action, or state as real, then turns to a qualification. The speaker effectively says “X is indeed X” or “X did happen,” while signaling that the first point does not settle the whole matter. The second clause supplies the limitation, reservation, or opposing consideration. The outline places this item under simple compound sentences and the category of contrastive clauses. Its listed scope is this pattern; that level label does not establish which examination version a test centre currently administers.
For example, a speaker might concede that a book has been finished, but explain that some parts remain unclear. The concession is not a retraction: the book was completed. The following clause narrows what that accomplishment means. This makes the pattern useful in discussion, evaluation, and polite disagreement, especially when you want to recognize the other side before stating your own qualification.
Formation and the roles of 倒 and 了
Repeat the same verb or adjective around (倒)是. In 这本书我读是读完了, 读 occurs first by itself and then with the result complement 完. The second occurrence may therefore contain a complement, object or aspect marker; it still repeats the same main word. A sentence such as 我倒是读完了 also concedes a fact, but lacks the repetition and is not the exact X是X construction taught here.
倒 is optional in the outline’s written pattern. In these uses it often gives the acknowledgment a conversational or mildly contrastive tone: the fact is granted, while the next clause limits its importance. 是 is part of the pattern; it is not the ordinary 是 that simply links a noun subject to a noun predicate.
了 is also shown as optional in the outline. With an event verb, it commonly presents the event as completed or achieved, as in 想出来了 and 读完了. With an adjective, it can mark a degree or change, as in 贵是贵了点儿. These examples show different uses of 了; do not assume it always has the same aspectual meaning or that it must be included in every sentence. The speaker’s intended meaning and the wording of the first clause matter.
- Adjective: 贵是贵了点儿,不过质量确实不错。
- Verb with 倒: 办法想倒是想出来了,可是还需要大家一起完善。
- Verb without 倒: 他来是来了,不过只待了十分钟就走了。
Examples in context
贵是贵了点儿,不过质量确实不错。
办法想倒是想出来了,可是还需要大家一起完善。
这本书我读是读完了,只是有些地方还没完全理解。
他来是来了,不过只待了十分钟就走了。
这个问题讨论倒是讨论过了,但目前还没有形成一致意见。
All five examples repeat the main word: 贵是贵, 想倒是想, 读是读, 来是来, and 讨论倒是讨论. The second occurrence can add material such as 出来、完、过 or 了. The speaker acknowledges the price, solution, reading, visit or discussion, then qualifies its significance; the repetition does not cancel the first fact.
Choosing the right context
Use the pattern when both parts are relevant: the first is accepted as true, yet the second changes the evaluation or adds an important qualification. It can soften a disagreement because it explicitly grants something before introducing a reservation. The contrast may be strong or mild; the wording after the comma determines its exact force.
Common follow-up connectors include 不过, 可是, 只是, and 但, but the outline’s formula does not require one fixed connector. A pause and the second clause can also establish the turn. Choose a connector that matches the relationship: 只是 often introduces a reservation or limitation, while 不过 and 可是 can mark a more explicit counterpoint. These are tendencies, not rigid rules.
Statements, questions, and a practical check
The acknowledgment may be followed by a question rather than a statement: 好是好,可是你用得上吗? (“It is good, but will you have a use for it?”). The speaker grants that it is good and questions its usefulness. The question comes from the second clause with 吗, not from repetition itself. Do not automatically turn an acknowledgment into a question just by adding a question mark.
Before using it, identify the repeated word, decide whether 倒 or 了 helps express your intended stance or event meaning, and write a complete second clause that supplies a real qualification. Read both parts together: if the second clause does not qualify or contrast with the first, the sentence may sound like an incomplete setup. Do not add a negative form merely to force disagreement; the contrast can concern degree, consequences, remaining work, or another limitation.
Frequently asked questions
Does X have to be an adjective?
No. The examples use both adjectives and verbs. Repeat the same main word in the first clause, then use the following clause to qualify or contrast with it.
Must I include 倒 and 了?
The supplied outline writes both in parentheses, indicating optional positions in its formula. Their usefulness depends on meaning and context: 倒 can add a conversational concessive tone, while 了 can mark completion or a state or degree change. Do not assume every use of 了 means the same thing.
Can I turn this into a question?
The following clause can ask a question, as in 好是好,可是你用得上吗? The first part grants that it is good; the second asks about usefulness. Repetition alone is not a question marker.
