HSK 7-9 Degree Adverbs: Mastering Formal Nuance and Intensity

At advanced proficiency, speakers move beyond basic intensifiers to express precise shades of degree, comparison, effort, and register. This lesson breaks down the fourteen degree adverbs listed under Levels 7-9 in the supplied syllabus outline, showing how to pair each with the right predicate type and avoid common collocational errors.

Why Advanced Degree Adverbs Matter

The source groups fourteen items as degree adverbs. Their meanings include strong or slight degree, effort, emphasis and increasing degree. Learn the intended meaning and the whole predicate. Familiar syllable patterns and formal style are helpful guides, not a universal test that permits or rejects every phrase.

Subject Degree Adverb Adjective or Stative Predicate

Most of these adverbs precede two-syllable adjectives, psychological verbs, or stative verb phrases. However, several items in this syllabus group have specialized functions—such as expressing exclamation, exerted effort, or incremental change—that require closer inspection.

High, Comparative, and Exclamatory Intensity: 大为, 万分, 分外, 尤为, 何等, 颇

大为 often marks a strong reaction or change, as in 大为赞赏 and 大为改观. 万分 expresses very high degree in phrases such as 万分荣幸 or 危急万分; it is not confined to a person’s emotion and does not literally measure ten thousand units. The word order depends on the whole expression.

听到评审团的决定,她感到万分荣幸,在场的学者也大为赞赏。

Tīngdào píngshěntuán de juédìng, tā gǎndào wànfēn róngxìng, zàichǎng de xuézhě yě dàwéi zànshǎng.

Hearing the panel's decision, she felt extremely honored, and the scholars present also expressed great appreciation.

万分 modifies the subjective feeling 荣幸, while 大为 modifies the evaluative reaction 赞赏.

To highlight that something stands out against a baseline, use 分外 (exceptionally, particularly) or 尤为 (especially). 分外 carries a literary or descriptive tone, portraying a quality that exceeds normal expectations (such as scenery looking 格外 or 分外 clear after rain). 尤为 is more analytical; it singles out one item from a broader group as surpassing the rest.

雨后的山林分外幽静,其中古寺周围的景致尤为迷人。

Yǔhòu de shānlín fènwài yōujìng, qízhōng gǔsì zhōuwéi de jǐngzhì yóuwéi mírén.

After the rain, the mountain forest is exceptionally quiet, and the scenery around the ancient temple is particularly charming.

分外 highlights an extraordinary descriptive quality; 尤为 singles out one part within a larger scope.

何等 adds rhetorical or exclamatory force, as in 何等坚定的意志. It can express admiration, criticism or another evaluation according to context. 颇 gives a measured “quite / rather” in expressions such as 颇有见地, 颇受欢迎 and 数量颇多. These are useful pairings, not a rule requiring every following word to have one or two syllables.

在那样艰苦的条件下完成考察,需要何等坚定的意志!

Zài nàyàng jiānkǔ de tiáojiàn xià wánchéng kǎochá, xūyào héděng jiāndìng de yìzhì!

What tremendous determination it takes to complete an investigation under such harsh conditions!

何等 lends strong rhetorical and exclamatory force before the adjective 坚定.

这篇评论颇有见地,在学术界引起了广泛关注。

Zhè piān pínglùn pō yǒu jiàndì, zài xuéshùjiè yǐnqǐ le guǎngfàn guānzhù.

This commentary is quite insightful and has attracted widespread attention in academic circles.

颇 naturally pairs with the monosyllabic verb 有 in the formal phrase 颇有见地.

Slight Degree and Subtle Nuance: 略, 略微, 稍稍, 微

The outline includes four items indicating a low or slight degree: 略, 略微, 稍稍, and 微. Choosing among them depends heavily on syllable rhythm and syntactic environment.

  • 略 (slightly, briefly) is concise and formal. It frequently pairs with monosyllabic verbs like 略知 (know a little), 略显 (appear slightly), or 略带 (carry a hint of), or precedes two-syllable adjectives followed by comparative markers.
  • 略微 and 稍稍 both indicate a small degree. A following quantity or aspect expression is possible, but not obligatory: 他的语气略微不同 and 她稍稍紧张 are complete descriptions. Adding 一点儿, 一些 or a suitable aspect marker must fit the meaning, rather than fill an automatic slot.
  • 微 (faintly, slightly) as a standalone adverb is the most literary and restricted of the four. It typically precedes a single-syllable verb or adjective of facial expression, posture, or subtle sensation (such as 微一笑, 微怔, or 微酸), or forms tight compound words like 微调 (fine-tune).

经过几轮微调,新方案略显保守,但预算压力略微缓解了一些,团队也稍稍松了一口气。

Jīngguò jǐ lún wēitiáo, xīn fāng'àn lüè xiǎn bǎoshǒu, dàn yùsuàn yālì lüèwēi huǎnjiě le yīxiē, tuánduì yě shāoshāo sōng le yī kǒu qì.

After several rounds of fine-tuning, the new plan looks slightly conservative, but the budget pressure has eased a little, and the team also feels some relief.

略显, 略微缓解 and 稍稍松了一口气 show a small degree. The extra quantifying phrases in this particular sentence are possible, not required after every use of 略微 or 稍稍.

她闻言微怔,随即恢复了平静。

Tā wényán wēi zhèng, suíjí huīfù le píngjìng.

On hearing this, she was slightly taken aback, then regained her composure right away.

微 directly precedes a monosyllabic verb of subtle reaction (怔) in narrative prose.

Progressive Intensification: 愈加 and 越发

愈加 and 越发 present a quality or reaction as more pronounced than a relevant earlier or contextual baseline. The background can be understood from the conversation: 你越发自信了 need not have a written 随着 clause before it. An explicit time or condition clause is one useful way to supply that background.

optional explicit condition or time context Subject Progressive Adverb (愈加 / 越发) Adjective or Stative Predicate

愈加 is often more literary or formal; 越发 also fits conversation. Neither is categorically banned from a 比 construction. A temporal comparison such as 他比从前越发谨慎了 can emphasize increasing caution. For a simple A–B comparison, 更 is often the straightforward choice. Check the comparison and intended development instead of declaring every combination redundant.

随着证据陆续公开,案件的脉络愈加清晰,公众的讨论也越发深入。

Suízhe zhèngjù lùxù gōngkāi, ànjiàn de màiluò yùjiā qīngxī, gōngzhòng de tǎolùn yě yuèfā shēnrù.

As evidence was successively made public, the outline of the case became increasingly clear, and public discussion grew all the more in-depth.

愈加 and 越发 mark progressive intensification triggered by the 随着 clause.

Critical Contrast and Learner Trap: 极度 vs. 极力

The outline groups both 极度 and 极力 here, but they contribute different meanings. 极度 states a high degree; 极力 describes strong effort. Identify whether the predicate names a quality or the act of trying, rather than deciding whether the person is generally active or passive.

Subject 极力 Volitional Action Verb Phrase

Compare 极度疲惫, a high degree of exhaustion, with 极力劝阻, trying hard to dissuade. A longer phrase can modify a noun, as in 极度复杂的局势; this does not make 极度 a free-standing adjective. 极力 commonly accompanies an effortful act such as 维护, 否认 or 推荐.

面对极度复杂的局势,谈判代表极力维护双方的共同利益。

Miànduì jídù fùzá de júshì, tánpàn dàibiǎo jílì wéihù shuāngfāng de gòngtóng lìyì.

Facing an extremely complex situation, the negotiating representatives spared no effort to safeguard the common interests of both sides.

极度 modifies the state 复杂, whereas 极力 modifies the deliberate action 维护.

× 连续工作十几个小时后,值班医生感到极力疲惫。

Liánxù gōngzuò shí jǐ gè xiǎoshí hòu, zhíbān yīshēng gǎndào jílì píbèi.

Intended: After working continuously for over ten hours, the doctor on duty felt extremely exhausted.

极力 expresses effort at an action, while 疲惫 here is the state whose degree is being described. Replace 极力 with 极度 to keep the intended high degree of exhaustion.

Corrected example: 连续工作十几个小时后,值班医生感到极度疲惫。

连续工作十几个小时后,值班医生感到极度疲惫。

Liánxù gōngzuò shí jǐ gè xiǎoshí hòu, zhíbān yīshēng gǎndào jídù píbèi.

After working continuously for over ten hours, the on-duty doctor felt extremely exhausted.

极度 intensifies 疲惫. The same doctor, working hours and resulting exhaustion remain in the correction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace 很 with 颇 in any everyday sentence?

Not mechanically. 颇 often gives a literary or formal tone, as in 颇有见地 or 数量颇多. Ordinary vocabulary is not automatically incompatible with it; the tone of the whole sentence matters. 很 is the more general choice when no such stylistic effect is intended.

What is the main difference between 略 and 略微?

略 is shorter and often more compact in writing; 略微 has the same broad small-degree meaning in many contexts. Neither requires you to add a quantity phrase after every predicate. Compare 略显不同 and 略微不同, both of which can give a complete description.

Can 愈加 or 越发 be used in a 比 (bǐ) comparative sentence?

They can occur with 比; there is no blanket ban. Interpret the baseline and whether an increasing degree is intended. For a plain comparison, 更 may be simpler; 越发 or 愈加 adds a sense of becoming more pronounced. Do not replace a claim of stronger degree with 略 merely because a 比 phrase is present.
