HSK 7-9 Manner Adverbs (方式副词): Structure, Subgroups, and Collocations
At the HSK 7-9 level, manner adverbs (方式副词) specify how, under what stance, or by what procedural pattern an action unfolds. Because these words are highly selective about register, emotional polarity, and verb collocation, mastering them requires grouping them by function rather than memorizing isolated translations.

按理他早该收到通知了,不知为什么还没动静。
按理 introduces a logical expectation, paired with 早该 and followed by a real-world contrast.
× 他的管理风格跟前任截然很相似。
For the intended similarity, remove 截然 and keep 很相似. 截然不同 would express a different, opposite claim, so it is not a meaning-preserving correction of this example.
Corrected example: 他的管理风格跟前任很相似。

What Manner Adverbs Do at the Advanced Level
In the HSK 7-9 grammar outline, manner adverbs (方式副词) form a dense lexical category that allows speakers to compress complex descriptions of attitude, procedure, or authority into a concise modifier before the predicate. Instead of adding a long prepositional phrase or subordinate clause, advanced Chinese frequently relies on a disyllabic or monosyllabic adverb to signal whether an action was taken resolutely, without authorization, step by step, or as usual.
Core Sentence Structures and Placement
Most manner adverbs occupy the standard adverbial slot between the subject (or topic) and the main verb phrase. When negation or modal verbs are present, the relative order depends on the scope of modification: adverbs describing the concrete execution of an action (such as 逐一, 强行, or 就近) generally stand after modal verbs and negative markers like 不得 or 没有, directly preceding the verb.
按理 and 按说 present an expectation based on reasoning or ordinary circumstances. They can come before or after the subject. A modal or later contrast is possible, not compulsory: 按理这个安排是可行的 can simply state an assessment. The first example adds an actual contrast with 还没动静.

Functional Subgroups in the HSK 7-9 List
The source row contains 36 words. The following groups are learning aids based on meaning; a word may have uses that cross these boundaries. 大肆 and 如期 are single entries, not 大 plus 肆 or 如 plus 期.
- Resolve, effort and impulse: 百般 (in every possible way), 竭力 (with all one’s effort), 拼命 (desperately / with all one’s might), 尽情 (to one’s heart’s content), 断然 (firmly / flatly), 毅然 (resolutely), 执意 (insistently), 刻意 (deliberately / with particular effort), 有意 (intentionally / with an intention), 不由得 (cannot help but). Resoluteness does not by itself prove that a decision is noble or wise.
- Timing and change: 趁早 (early, while there is still time), 趁机 (take an opportunity), 火速 (with great urgency), 骤然 (abruptly), 日趋 (increasingly / tending toward a state), 如期 (as scheduled). 日趋 indicates a developing tendency, not a grammatical requirement for a two-syllable predicate.
- Authority, transgression, and excess: 擅自 (without authorization), 私自 (privately/without permission), 强行 (forcibly), 公然 (openly/brazenly), 大肆 (wantonly/on a large scale, derogatory), 任意 (arbitrarily/at will), and 瞎 (blindly/groundlessly, colloquial).
- Scope and sequence: 逐一 (one by one), 一并 (together in the same handling), 一举 (at one stroke), 一手 (personally directing or carrying out something), 就近 (at a nearby suitable place), 专程 (making a trip for a particular purpose). 一手 can credit someone with taking charge; context determines whether anyone helped.
- Routine, reasoning and declaration: 按理 (according to reason), 按说 (normally / one would expect), 照常 (as usual), 照例 (following precedent), 照样 (still the same / in the same way), 截然 (clear-cut, especially in contrasts), 特此 (hereby in a formal written statement). The style of 特此 is not limited to government documents.
面对突如其来的危机,团队毅然调整方案,竭力挽回损失。
毅然 highlights decisive resolve in a difficult moment; 竭力 highlights maximum effort.
专家组专程赶赴现场,逐一核查了所有安全隐患。
专程 specifies the dedicated purpose of the trip, while 逐一 marks sequential, item-by-item verification.
Important Synonym Contrasts
Several items in this group overlap in English translation but differ in register or focus:
- 擅自 highlights acting without the required authority or permission. 私自 highlights private action without permission or others’ knowledge. It does not necessarily prove a financial benefit or selfish motive; both words describe how the action relates to authorization.
- 照常 vs. 照例 vs. 照样: 照常 focuses on operations continuing normally despite potential disruption (such as 照常营业). 照例 highlights following an established precedent or regular custom. 照样 stresses that the outcome or manner remains unchanged even under concessive conditions, often pairing with 尽管 or 即使.
- 刻意 vs. 有意: 有意 simply means doing something on purpose rather than by accident (and can also mean having the desire to do something). 刻意 adds the nuance of putting in calculated effort or going out of one's way, which can sometimes sound overly artificial.
- 按理 and 按说 both frame an expectation. 按理 emphasizes reasoning from what is known; 按说 is often conversational. Either can precede a contrast, but neither guarantees an objective conclusion or requires reality to turn out differently.
任何单位不得擅自更改规划,员工也不得私自拷贝内部数据。
擅自 focuses on overstepping official authority; 私自 focuses on unauthorized private action.
研讨会照例在周五举行;尽管下着暴雨,大家照样准时出席。
照例 marks routine precedent, whereas 照样 emphasizes that the action proceeds unchanged despite adverse conditions.
Collocation Limits and Common Learner Mistakes
A frequent pitfall at advanced levels is treating bound manner adverbs as free degree modifiers. For example, 截然 conveys a sharp, clear-cut boundary, so it only modifies words expressing difference or opposition—such as 不同, 相反, or 分开. It cannot be used as a general intensifier meaning 'very' before words of similarity or ordinary adjectives.
× 他的管理风格跟前任截然很相似。
For the intended similarity, remove 截然 and keep 很相似. 截然不同 would express a different, opposite claim, so it is not a meaning-preserving correction of this example.
Corrected example: 他的管理风格跟前任很相似。
他的管理风格跟前任很相似。
The sentence keeps the original similarity claim. For a separate example of 截然不同, compare 这两个方案的结果截然不同, “The outcomes of these two plans are completely different.”
特此 appears in formal written acts such as 特此通知 and 特此声明. It is not restricted to four characters: 特此向各位致谢 is also a complete expression. It can appear in company or personal correspondence as well as official notices. 瞎 is colloquial and evaluative, as in 瞎说 or 瞎忙; choose it only when that voice fits the text.
Frequently asked questions
Can 特此 be used in everyday conversation to mean 'specifically for this reason'?
特此 means something like “hereby” in a written notice or declaration. It is not the ordinary conversational word for “especially for this purpose.” In casual speech, choose wording appropriate to the actual action, such as 特意 or 专门 when you mean deliberately or specifically. A playful formal quotation in conversation has a different effect.
Can 大肆 describe positive achievements on a large scale?
大肆 usually presents an action as excessive or disapproved of, as in 大肆挥霍 or 大肆吹嘘. The evaluation is the speaker’s stance, not proof that the action is objectively wrong. For straightforward praise of large-scale work, 大力 or 大规模 is usually a better fit.
Where can 不由得 be placed in a sentence?
不由得 usually comes before the reaction or mental response, as in 他不由得笑了起来 (“He could not help laughing”). It can also frame a reaction with an understood cause or experiencer. Check who experiences the reaction rather than treating one fixed position as obligatory.
