HSK 6 所 (suǒ): 所…的, 有所 and Formal Phrases
In phrases such as 我们所面临的挑战, 所 (suǒ) comes before the verb phrase and helps link it to the thing faced. Learn this formal 所…的 pattern alongside compact expressions such as 大家所想 and related patterns such as 有所提高.

我们所面临的挑战非常严峻。
所 precedes the two-syllable transitive verb 面临, and 挑战 is the logical object of 面临.
× 这是记者所采访他的人。
For the intended meaning, 人 is already the person interviewed. The extra 他 after 采访 redundantly fills that same object role; remove it as in the next example.
Corrected example: 这是记者所采访的人。

Core Function and Grammatical Role
The HSK 6 outline classifies 所 as a structural particle. In a useful modern pattern, 我们所面临的挑战, 挑战 corresponds to the object of 面临. 所 comes before the verb phrase, and 的 links that phrase to the noun. The pattern is associated with formal writing and speech. This object relationship is a starting model, not an explanation of every fixed expression containing 所.
- Position: 所 precedes the relevant verb phrase, after an expressed agent. Other material can follow 所, as in 所能解决的问题; it need not touch the main lexical verb directly.
- Object relationship in the core relative pattern: in 我们所面临的挑战, the noun is what is faced. It is not an agent carrying out 面临. A logical object need not be a person physically receiving an action.
- Register: Characteristic of formal writing, news reports, academic prose, and public speeches.
Main Structural Patterns
In modern prose, the most productive pattern pairs 所 before the verb with 的 after the verb. The noun following 的 is the semantic object of the verb. If the meaning of that noun is already clear from context or refers to an abstract concept like 'what' or 'that which', the head noun can be omitted, leaving 的 at the end of the nominal phrase.
我们所面临的挑战非常严峻。
所 precedes the two-syllable transitive verb 面临, and 挑战 is the logical object of 面临.
他所追求的并不是个人名誉。
Here the head noun after 的 is omitted, turning 他所追求的 into a nominal phrase meaning 'that which he pursues'.
Compact, partly classical expressions can omit 的 and a following noun. Learn whole combinations such as 据我所知, 大家所想 and 各有所长. They are not a rule that any verb can be placed after 所 to make a free-standing noun; the sentence frame and established usage matter.
这正是大家所想。
所 combines directly with the monosyllabic verb 想 without 的 to form a formal nominal phrase.
Related formal patterns include 有所提高 and 有所不同. 有所 can indicate some improvement or difference; it does not guarantee politeness or a positive change, as 有所下降 shows. 无所 also occurs in established phrases such as 无所畏惧, meaning “fear nothing.” Do not interpret every 有所 / 无所 phrase as a mild statement about change, or require every following predicate to be transitive.
经过几年的努力,他的专业能力有所提高。
有所提高 indicates some improvement without specifying its exact size. This is suitable for a formal evaluation, but not automatically polite or positive in every 有所 phrase.
Register Contrast: When to Use or Omit 所
Compare 我买的书 and 我所买的书. Both can identify the books I bought; the version with 所 is more formal. For an ordinary conversational statement, the shorter version is a good choice. The longer version can still fit a formal report or contrast. Concrete nouns and one-syllable verbs do not make 所 ungrammatical, and formal writing does not require it in every relative clause.
我买的书都在桌子上。
This version without 所 is a neutral choice in everyday conversation. 我所买的书 is also grammatical and more formal.
Structural Constraints and Common Learner Errors
In the next relative clause, 人 is the person interviewed. Adding 他 as another reference to that same person after 采访 leaves the intended object role expressed twice. Remove 他 to keep the intended meaning. This is a problem with that particular relative-clause structure; it is not a rule that every Chinese verb must have only one object or that every expression containing 所 uses identical syntax.
× 这是记者所采访他的人。
For the intended meaning, 人 is already the person interviewed. The extra 他 after 采访 redundantly fills that same object role; remove it as in the next example.
Corrected example: 这是记者所采访的人。
这是记者所采访的人。
Correct replacement: Remove the redundant pronoun 他 so that the transitive verb 采访 links cleanly to the head noun 人.
The verb phrase need not be bare. Compare 我所看到的景象 and 我所做过的工作: 到 is a complement in the first, and 过 marks experience in the second. Choose complements and aspect according to the intended event and the full construction; do not delete them merely because 所 is present.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use 所 when the modified noun is the subject (doer) of the verb rather than the object?
No. The structural particle 所 specifically marks the extraction of the logical object (the receiver of the action). If the noun being modified is the agent performing the action—for example, 'the reporter who interviewed me' (采访我的记者)—you cannot place 所 before the verb.
How does 所 work in the formal passive pattern 为……所……?
In formal passive sentences like 为大家所接受 (accepted by everyone), 为 introduces the agent (大家) and 所 precedes the transitive verb (接受). The grammatical subject of the whole sentence is still the logical object of the verb after 所, so the core object-marking function of 所 remains the same.
Why is the structural particle 所 listed under HSK 6?
In the supplied 2025-11 syllabus outline (labeled for 2026-07 implementation), the structural particle 所 is categorized at Level 6. Please note that syllabus levels define the scope of that reference outline and do not guarantee which exam version a specific test center administers on your test date.
