HSK 6 · Fixed patterns

HSK 6 Fixed Phrase: X了就X了,(没)有 ……

The fixed pattern X了就X了,(没)有…… expresses pragmatic acceptance of an irreversible or undesired outcome, followed by a clause that dismisses worry or points out a reassuring fact.

completed event or state (X) 了就 completed event or state (X) 了,没有 reason for worry or regret
Example sentence

花瓶碎了就碎了,没有什么好心疼的。

huāpíng suì le jiù suì le , méiyǒu shénme hǎo xīnténg de .

If the vase is broken, then it's broken; there is nothing worth fretting over.

The noun 花瓶 is fronted as the topic, and the state verb 碎 is repeated in the X slot, followed by 没有 to dismiss regret.

Core Meaning and Pragmatic Tone

In the Level 6 grammar outline, X了就X了,(没)有…… is listed as a fixed phrase (固定短语). Speakers use it when an undesirable event has already happened—or is treated as unavoidable—and they want to stop dwelling on it. The first half (X了就X了) literally says that if X has happened, then it has happened. Pragmatically, it signals resignation, emotional release, or decisive acceptance. The second half introduces a follow-up with 没有 or 有 to explain why the situation does not warrant panic, grief, or regret.

Sentence Structure and the Two Follow-up Paths

The slot X is typically filled by a concise predicate indicating a change of state or a completed action, such as a single verb, an adjective expressing a result, or a brief negative verb phrase. Because repetition needs to sound rhythmic and punchy, speakers often front the topic or object to the start of the sentence and repeat only the core verb or adjective.

completed event or state (X) 了就 completed event or state (X) 了,没有 reason for worry or regret

没有 negates a reason to worry or regret, as in 没有什么大不了的 (“It’s no big deal”), 没有什么好难过的 (“There is nothing to be sad about”) or 没有必要 (“There is no need”).

车错过了就错过了,没有什么大不了的,我们改签下一班。

chē cuòguò le jiù cuòguò le , méiyǒu shénme dàbuliǎo de , wǒmen gǎiqiān xià yī bān .

If we missed the train, we missed it; it's no big deal—let's rebook onto the next one.

Uses 没有什么大不了的 to calm the listener down and pivot to a practical solution.

completed event or state (X) 了就 completed event or state (X) 了,有 rhetorical question with 什么 or reassuring fact

When the second clause uses 有, it operates in one of two ways. First, it frequently forms a rhetorical question with 什么, challenging the listener on why they are upset—which means the exact same thing as the 没有 statement, only more spirited. Second, 有 can introduce a concrete mitigating fact or backup resource that solves the problem.

面试没过就没过,有什么好难过的?

miànshì méi guò jiù méi guò , yǒu shénme hǎo nánguò de ?

If you didn't pass the interview, you didn't pass; what is there to be sad about?

没过 is repeated without completed-event 了. 有什么好难过的 is rhetorical here and dismisses the need for sadness. Depending on relationship and tone, it may reassure or seem insensitive.

衣服湿了就湿了,有备用的一套在包里呢。

yīfu shī le jiù shī le , yǒu bèiyòng de yī tào zài bāo lǐ ne .

If the clothes got wet, they got wet; there is a spare set in the bag.

Here 有 introduces a reassuring factual resource rather than a rhetorical question.

Useful Contrasts and Structural Limits

Learners sometimes equate X了就X了 with standard concessive structures like 虽然……但是…… (although... but...). While both acknowledge a fact before pivoting to a calmer reaction, their communicative functions are quite different.

虽然花瓶碎了,但是我一点儿也不心疼。

suīrán huāpíng suì le , dànshì wǒ yīdiǎnr yě bù xīnténg .

Although the vase broke, I don't feel bad about it at all.

Grammatically correct contrast sentence: this states a calm personal fact rather than actively brushing the incident aside with conversational finality.

  • 虽然……但是…… explicitly marks a concession or contrast; its emotional tone depends on context. X了就X了 presents the event as settled and commonly belongs to conversation. The former is not automatically calm, and the latter is not automatically comforting.
  • Losses and mistakes are useful contexts, but the construction does not require an irreversible or objectively bad event. 成功了就成功了,有什么好骄傲的? dismisses the importance of a positive achievement. That may sound belittling rather than congratulatory.
  • Short predicates give the repeated pattern a clear rhythm. Move a long modifier or an established topic outside the repeated part when it improves clarity; length is a style consideration, not a fixed grammatical word limit.

Topic choice and verb complements

Distinguish a verb’s direct object from a broader topic. 辞职 does not normally take 工作 as a direct object; 工作辞了 uses transitive 辞 instead. But Chinese also allows topics linked by context rather than an object gap: 工作方面,我已经辞职了 is understandable. A noun before a verb is not automatically its object.

工作,辞职了就辞职了,没有什么可后悔的。

gōngzuò , cízhí le jiù cízhí le , méiyǒu shénme kě hòuhuǐ de .

As for the job, you’ve resigned, so that’s that; there is nothing to regret.

A conversational broader topic: 工作 sets the area of discussion, with a pause. 辞职 does not take 工作 as its direct object. The shorter next example is clearer without a topic contrast; this is a wording comparison, not a ban on noun topics before intransitive verbs.

辞职了就辞职了,没有什么可后悔的。

cízhí le jiù cízhí le , méiyǒu shénme kě hòuhuǐ de .

Once you've resigned, you've resigned; there is nothing to regret.

A concise model with 辞职 repeated. It expresses acceptance without an extra topic; it does not prove that all broader topics are ungrammatical.

For a concise reassurance, 辞职了就辞职了,没有什么可后悔的 is enough. If you want an explicit object-topic, use 工作辞了就辞了. The broader-topic version 工作,辞职了就辞职了 can be understood in conversation, but the pause and context matter; choose the shorter model when no topic contrast is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can the X slot be a negative phrase like 没考上?

Yes: 没考上就没考上 and 没买到就没买到 express acceptance of a negative outcome. Use the negative predicate as it stands rather than mechanically adding completed-event 了 after 没. Sentence-final 了 has other functions, so adding it changes the analysis; it is not a freely optional part of every negative example.

Is X了就X了 polite to use with superiors or clients?

Use caution. When comforting a friend or taking responsibility for your own loss, it sounds generous and relaxed. However, if you make a mistake that harms a client or supervisor and say X了就X了, it will sound dismissive and irresponsible.

Does this Level 6 label mean this exact phrase will appear on my booked HSK test?

The Level 6 classification comes from the supplied 2025-11 HSK syllabus outline (marked for 2026-07 implementation). Because test administration versions vary by date and test center, treat this level tag as a study scope reference rather than a guarantee about a specific exam session.
