HSK 6 Conditional Sentences: 除非……,否则/不然……
除非……,否则/不然…… sets an exception or condition with 除非, then states what follows if that condition is not met. The consequence may be positive, negative, certain or qualified; the connector itself does not decide those details.

除非患者本人签署知情同意书,否则医院不能进行这项手术。
Formal register using 否则; the second clause states the institutional prohibition when the condition is not met.
× 除非你每天坚持练习口语,否则你的发音一定会越来越地道。
Incorrect for that intended message, although the sentence is syntactically possible. It says that if you do not practise, your pronunciation will definitely improve—the reverse of the intended relationship. The repair uses 很难, as in the linked example. Positive consequences after 否则 are not inherently wrong.
Corrected example: 除非你每天坚持练习口语,否则你的发音很难变得地道。

Core Meaning and Logical Polarity
The HSK 6 outline places 除非……,否则/不然…… among conditional complex sentences. 除非 introduces a condition or exception; the second clause states the consequence when that condition is absent. In English, use “Unless A, B” or “If not A, B” to keep the direction clear.
Read the structure as “If A does not hold, B”. 除非 introduces A; 否则 or 不然 introduces B for the opposite case. A may contain several requirements or alternatives. When A does hold, the sentence alone need not guarantee that B disappears or that a desired result is achieved.
除非患者本人签署知情同意书,否则医院不能进行这项手术。
Formal register using 否则; the second clause states the institutional prohibition when the condition is not met.
However, the second clause does not always have to be an undesirable failure. When the first clause describes an extreme or unlikely disruption, the clause after 否则 or 不然 simply states the default plan that will proceed in all other circumstances.
除非遇到极端恶劣的天气,否则明天的户外音乐节将照常举行。
Here 除非 introduces an unlikely disruption, so 否则 introduces the default plan that holds in all other cases.
Sentence Structure and Subject Placement
This pattern connects two clauses. 除非 stands in the first clause, either at the very beginning of the sentence before the subject, or immediately after the subject if the writer wants to topicalize the person or organization involved. 否则 or 不然 stands at the beginning of the second clause, right after the comma.
Common consequences include 不能、不会、很难 or 无法, and some speakers strengthen a claim with 肯定 or 必然. These words supply the certainty or difficulty; 否则/不然 itself simply places the clause in the case where the condition is absent.
除非你能拿出确凿的数据,否则委员会是不会批准这个预算方案的。
Uses 是……的 in the second clause to emphasize the certainty of the negative outcome.
这家企业除非彻底改革管理制度,不然很难在激烈的市场竞争中生存下去。
The subject 这家企业 is placed before 除非 as the main topic of both clauses.
Comparing 否则 and 不然
Within the pattern 除非……,否则/不然……, the conjunctions 否则 and 不然 occupy the exact same grammatical slot and express the same core meaning ('if not so, then...'). Choosing between them depends primarily on register and tone.
- 否则 (fǒuzé) is more formal and written in flavor (书面语). It fits naturally in institutional rules, legal or medical notices, news commentary, and formal business arguments.
- 不然 (bùrán) is versatile and slightly more conversational (口语). While it is also acceptable in standard written prose, it is the preferred choice in everyday spoken warnings, urgent reminders, and casual dialogue.
除非我们现在马上出发,不然肯定赶不上最后一班高铁。
Conversational register using 不然 for an urgent everyday situation.
Common Learner Pitfall: Reversing the Outcome Logic
The most frequent mistake advanced learners make with 除非……,否则/不然…… is confusing it with positive conditional structures that state what happens when a condition IS met. In Chinese, 除非 can pair with different second-clause markers, and the marker you choose completely flips the polarity of the second clause.
The second clause must describe the case where the condition after 除非 is not met. Check that this is the message you intend. A sentence can be grammatical yet reverse your intended advice, as in the practice example; an affirmative second clause is not automatically a contradiction.
除非你每天坚持练习口语,否则你的发音很难变得地道。
Correct: After 否则 ('if you do not practice every day'), the clause logically states the negative consequence (很难变得地道).
Frequently asked questions
Why shouldn't I translate both 除非 and 否则 into English when checking my sentence?
Translate the relationship rather than requiring a separate English word for every connector: “Unless A, B” or “If not A, B” usually conveys it. Chinese naturally pairs 除非 with 否则/不然 in this frame. The statement concerns the case without A; it need not assert the opposite outcome when A holds.
Does the subject go before or after 除非?
Both positions are grammatical. If both clauses share the same subject, placing the subject before 除非 highlights it as the topic (for example, 这家企业除非……), while placing 除非 at the very start of the sentence emphasizes the condition as a whole.
