HSK 6 Adversative Complex Sentences: 虽……,但/可/却/也……

In advanced Chinese, 虽……,但/可/却/也…… forms a compact adversative complex sentence that concedes a fact in the first clause and introduces an unexpected turn or qualifying assessment in the second. Mastering it requires controlling both the concise rhythm of 虽 and the distinct word-order rules separating conjunctions (但, 可) from adverbs (却, 也).

虽 Concessive Clause , 但 / 可 Subject (if present) Contrastive Predicate
Example sentence

这份策划案虽有几处细节需要完善,但整体框架已经相当成熟。

zhè fèn cèhuà'àn suī yǒu jǐ chù xìjié xūyào wánshàn , dàn zhěngtǐ kuàngjià yǐjīng xiāngdāng chéngshú .

Although this proposal has a few details that need refinement, the overall framework is already quite mature.

Uses 虽 with 但 for an objective, formal evaluation; the second clause introduces a new subject (整体框架) placed after the conjunction 但.

A common mistake

× 这番话虽说得委婉,却大家都听出了其中的弦外之音。

zhè fān huà suī shuō de wěiwǎn , què dàjiā dōu tīngchū le qízhōng de xiánwàizhīyīn .

Intended: Although these words were spoken tactfully, everyone still heard the implied meaning behind them.

Incorrect: 却 is an adverb, not a conjunction, so it cannot be placed before the explicit subject 大家. Replace with “他虽未亲自到场祝贺,却特意托人送来了一份厚礼。”-subj.

Corrected example: 这番话虽说得委婉,大家却都听出了其中的弦外之音。

Core Function and Syllabus Scope

In the official HSK 6 grammar outline, the pattern 虽……,但/可/却/也…… is categorized under sentence types as an adversative complex sentence (转折复句).

Like the lower-level conjunction 虽然, the monosyllabic 虽 introduces a concessive clause: it acknowledges a true situation, condition, or limitation first, before the second clause pivots in a different or unexpected direction. At the advanced level, 虽 is preferred over 虽然 when the writer or speaker wants a tighter, more concise rhythm, especially in formal prose, news commentary, business summaries, or idiomatic four-character expressions.

虽 can stand before or after the subject according to the construction and focus. The examples here often use Subject + 虽 + predicate, especially with compact phrases such as 虽有 or 虽未. Pre-subject 虽 also occurs in modern formal prose, as in 虽天气恶劣,救援仍在继续; it is not confined to rare classical inversions.

Syntactic Division: Conjunctions (但 / 可) vs. Adverbs (却 / 也)

Although the four markers 但, 可, 却, and 也 all pair with 虽 to complete the adversative turn, they do not belong to the same grammatical word class. Grouping them by syntax is essential whenever the second clause contains an explicit subject.

虽 Concessive Clause , 但 / 可 Subject (if present) Contrastive Predicate

但 (short for 但是) and 可 (short for 可是) are conjunctions. They stand at the very beginning of the second clause, immediately after the comma. If the second clause introduces a new subject or repeats the subject, that subject comes after 但 or 可.

虽 Concessive Clause , Subject (if present) 却 / 也 Contrastive Predicate

In the ordinary contrastive patterns taught here, 却 and 也 normally follow an explicit subject and precede the predicate or another preverbal modifier. If the shared subject is omitted in the second clause, they can appear just after the comma. This is a rule about 却 and 也 in these constructions, not every Chinese adverb: words such as 也许 can naturally precede a subject.

这番话虽说得委婉,大家却都听出了其中的弦外之音。

zhè fān huà suī shuō de wěiwǎn , dàjiā què dōu tīngchū le qízhōng de xiánwàizhīyīn .

Although these words were spoken tactfully, everyone still heard the implied meaning behind them.

Correct placement: because the second clause introduces a new subject (大家), the adverb 却 must stand after 大家.

zhè fān huà suī shuō de wěiwǎn , què dàjiā dōu tīngchū le qízhōng de xiánwàizhīyīn .

Intended: Although these words were spoken tactfully, everyone still heard the implied meaning behind them.

Incorrect: 却 is an adverb, not a conjunction, so it cannot be placed before the explicit subject 大家. Replace with “他虽未亲自到场祝贺,却特意托人送来了一份厚礼。”-subj.

Corrected example: 这番话虽说得委婉,大家却都听出了其中的弦外之音。

Semantic Nuances Across the Four Markers

Beyond word order, each of the four pairing words shapes the tone and pragmatic force of the second clause differently:

  • 虽……,但…… expresses an objective, balanced, and relatively formal contrast. It is the standard choice in analytical writing, project evaluations, and formal statements where the second clause states the main conclusion.
  • 虽……,可…… carries a livelier, slightly more conversational or emotive tone. Even when paired with the concise 虽, 可 highlights a personal observation or surprising contrast in everyday commentary.
  • 虽……,却…… emphasizes counter-expectation. It draws attention to a sharp or paradoxical turn between what the first clause leads you to expect and how the subject actually behaves or turns out.
  • 虽……,也…… softens the opposition into a resilient, accepting, or baseline evaluation. Instead of a sharp clash, it means 'even though A is true, B still holds / is still acceptable anyway.'

Uses 虽 with 但 for an objective, formal evaluation; the second clause introduces a new subject (整体框架) placed after the conjunction 但.

老街的茶馆虽不起眼,可那里的龙井茶真是地道。

lǎojiē de cháguǎn suī bù qǐyǎn , kě nàlǐ de lóngjǐngchá zhēn shì dìdào .

Although the teahouse on the old street is unremarkable, the Longjing tea there is truly authentic.

Uses 虽 with 可 in an evaluative statement with a warm, observational tone; the second clause's topic/subject (那里的龙井茶) follows the conjunction 可.

他虽未亲自到场祝贺,却特意托人送来了一份厚礼。

tā suī wèi qīnzì dàochǎng zhùhè , què tèyì tuō rén sònglái le yī fèn hòulǐ .

Although he did not attend in person to offer congratulations, he specially asked someone to deliver a generous gift.

Uses 虽 with the adverb 却 when both clauses share the same subject (他), highlighting a positive counter-expectation.

这趟考察虽没能达成最终协议,也算是摸清了对方的底线。

zhè tàng kǎochá suī méi néng dáchéng zuìzhōng xiéyì , yě suàn shì mōqīng le duìfāng de dǐxiàn .

Although this fact-finding visit did not lead to a final agreement, it at least clarified the other party's bottom line.

Uses 虽 with the adverb 也 to express a reconciling, baseline assessment rather than a sharp opposition.

Useful Contrasts and Register Qualifications

To use 虽……,但/可/却/也…… naturally at an advanced level, keep two practical boundaries in mind. First, compare 虽 with disyllabic 虽然. Their core concessive meaning is identical, and in many sentences they are grammatically interchangeable. However, Chinese prosody favors syllable balance: 虽 pairs exceptionally well with monosyllabic words or compact structures such as 虽有 (although there is), 虽未 (although not yet), 虽非 (although it is not), and 虽小 (although small). When the predicate is very loose and colloquial, 虽然 feels more relaxed than 虽.

Second, pay attention to the contrast with 即使……,也……. 虽……,也…… normally presents its premise as accepted for the discussion, then states what still holds despite it. 即使……,也…… explicitly entertains a condition, often hypothetical or extreme. A speaker's acceptance of a premise is not independent verification that it is factually true.

Frequently asked questions

Is 虽 always interchangeable with 虽然?

They share the same concessive meaning, so substituting one for the other rarely changes the truth value of a sentence. However, 虽 is more compact and formal. In tight four-character phrases or before literary negatives like 未 and 非, 虽 is strongly preferred; in casual spoken clauses, 虽然 sounds more natural.

How does 虽……,也…… differ from 即使……,也……?

虽……,也…… concedes an actual, already-known fact in the first clause and states what still holds true in the second. 即使……,也…… typically introduces a hypothetical or extreme condition ('even if').

Should 虽 go before or after the subject of the first clause?

Both positions are possible. Subject + 虽 + predicate is a useful compact order, as in 他虽未到场,礼物却到了. 虽 can also precede the subject in modern formal prose. Choose a clear sentence structure and focus rather than assuming that the pre-subject position is ungrammatical.
