Noun Suffix —头 (tou): Word Formation, Meaning, and Usage Limits

Common words with —头 include concrete nouns, location words and abstract nouns. In examples such as 石头, 里头 and 看头, 头 is neutral-tone tou. Learn the complete words and their meanings; this does not license attaching 头 to every root or predicting every pronunciation from meaning alone.

Noun, verb, adjective, or directional root 头
Example sentence

工人们把路边的石头和木头都搬走了。

Gōngrénmen bǎ lùbiān de shítou hé mùtou dōu bānzǒu le.

The workers moved away all the stones and wood by the side of the road.

Here —头 attaches to the noun roots 石 and 木 in a neutral tone to form everyday concrete nouns.

What the Suffix —头 Does

The supplied HSK 5 outline lists —头 as a suffix. The independent noun 头 is pronounced tóu, in the second tone. In common suffix words such as 石头 and 看头, tou is neutral-tone and helps form a noun. This is a useful learner pattern, not a complete historical or pronunciation rule for every word containing 头.

Noun, verb, adjective, or directional root 头

The root preceding —头 can be a noun root, a verb, an adjective, or a directional morpheme. Because suffixation in Mandarin is lexicalized rather than freely productive across all words, learners should group —头 words by the type of root they attach to and learn the most natural patterns.

Forming Concrete Objects and Location Words

Familiar concrete nouns include 石头 (shítou, stone), 木头 (mùtou, wood), 舌头 (shétou, tongue), 骨头 (gǔtou, bone), 枕头 (zhěntou, pillow) and 罐头 (guàntou, canned food). Learn them as complete vocabulary items. In particular, do not classify 罐 as an action verb merely because 罐头 ends in 头.

In spoken Mandarin, —头 also attaches to directional morphemes like 上 (shàng, up), 下 (xià, down), 里 (lǐ, inside), 外 (wài, outside), 前 (qián, front), and 后 (hòu, back) to form location nouns such as 里头 (lǐtou) and 外头 (wàitou). These work very much like their counterparts with —面 (miàn) or —边 (biān), such as 里面 (lǐmiàn) and 外面 (wàimiàn), though the —头 forms carry a more colloquial, conversational tone.

天太冷了,别在外头站着,快进屋里头来。

Tiān tài lěng le, bié zài wàitou zhànzhe, kuài jìn wū lǐtou lái.

It is too cold; don't stand outside, come inside the room quickly.

Attached to directional roots, 外头 and 里头 function as colloquial location nouns.

Expressing Worth, Benefit, and Abstract Qualities

Some —头 nouns express interest, value or prospects and often occur with 有, 没有 or 没什么, as in 很有看头. Others have their own lexical meanings, such as 念头 meaning an idea or thought. Do not interpret every verb-root plus 头 as “worth doing,” or require every resulting noun to follow 有.

有 / 没有 Monosyllabic action verb 头
  • 看头 (kàntou): something worth watching or reading.
  • 说头 (shuōtou): something worth talking about or discussing.
  • 听头 (tīngtou): something worth listening to.
  • 搞头 (gǎotou) / 奔头 (bèntou): prospects, something worth pursuing or working toward.
  • 念头 (niàntou): an idea, thought or intention; for example, 打消这个念头 means to abandon this idea. It is a lexical noun, not the “worth doing” pattern.

这部电影情节很平淡,实在没什么看头。

Zhè bù diànyǐng qíngjié hěn píngdàn, shízài méi shénme kàntou.

The plot of this movie is very flat; there is really nothing worth watching in it.

看头 follows 没什么 to express that the movie lacks anything interesting to watch.

Similarly, —头 can attach to a small set of adjectives to turn a quality into an abstract noun. Well-established examples include 甜头 (tiántou, sweet taste, benefit, or small reward), 苦头 (kǔtou, hardship or suffering, often used in 吃苦头, chī kǔtou), and 准头 (zhǔntou, accuracy).

经过几年的努力,他的日子终于有了点儿甜头。

Jīngguò jǐ nián de nǔlì, tā de rìzi zhōngyú yǒu le diǎnr tiántou.

After several years of hard work, he finally began to enjoy some rewards in life.

Attached to the adjective 甜, 甜头 turns a descriptive quality into an abstract noun meaning benefit or reward.

Important Contrasts and Productivity Limits

Words ending in 头 differ in meaning and pronunciation. Compare the neutral-tone suffix in 石头 with full-tone 头 in 源头 (yuántóu, source) or 那头 (nàtóu, that end). Check complete-word pronunciation in a suitable dictionary. Meaning and pronunciation do not create a perfectly sharp boundary between every root and suffix analysis.

经理在电话那头等着你的回复呢。

Jīnglǐ zài diànhuà nàtóu děngzhe nǐ de huífù ne.

The manager is waiting for your reply on the other end of the phone.

Here 那头 (nàtóu) means that end and keeps its full second tone, contrasting with the neutral-tone suffix —头.

The value pattern is partly conventional and partly productive in colloquial or creative use. 看头 and 说头 are useful words to learn; 有吃头 can also be used for appealing food. This does not mean every action verb freely takes 头. With an unfamiliar verb or in neutral explanatory writing, 值得 plus a suitable action phrase is often clearer.

这家新开的饭馆菜做得很地道,很有吃头。

Zhè jiā xīn kāi de fànguǎn cài zuò de hěn dìdao, hěn yǒu chītou.

The dishes at this newly opened restaurant are very authentic and really worth trying.

有吃头 is possible in colloquial or promotional language about appealing food. Its familiarity can vary by region and context. 值得一吃 in the next example is a more general alternative, not a required repair of an ungrammatical word.

这家新开的饭馆菜做得很地道,很值得一吃。

Zhè jiā xīn kāi de fànguǎn cài zuò de hěn dìdao, hěn zhídé yī chī.

The dishes at this newly opened restaurant are very authentic; it is well worth eating at.

A neutral alternative with 值得一吃. It communicates the intended value directly without relying on familiarity with 有吃头.

Frequently asked questions

Is —头 always pronounced in the neutral tone?

The common suffix examples in this lesson, such as 石头, 里头 and 看头, use neutral-tone tou. Other words can use second-tone tóu, such as 源头. Learn and check the whole word; do not decide the tone solely by whether you can recognize a meaning like “head” or “end.”

What is the difference between 里头 / 外头 and 里面 / 外面?

Both pairs mean inside and outside and are grammatically interchangeable in most everyday sentences. However, 里头 and 外头 sound more colloquial and informal, whereas 里面 and 外面 are neutral and work in both spoken and written Chinese.

Does seeing —头 at Level 5 in this outline mean it will appear on my specific test?

No. The Level 5 classification comes from the supplied 2025-11 syllabus outline (labeled for 2026-07 implementation) to define learning scope, but actual test administration depends on the specific exam version used by your test center.
