HSK 5 Special Sentence Patterns: The 把 (bǎ) Sentence with Two Objects

At HSK 5, learners expand their command of the 把 (bǎ) construction to handle two distinct objects: one placed before the verb as the target of disposal, and a second placed immediately after the verb as the recipient, destination, or resulting identity.

Subject 把 Object 1 (item / theme) Verb Object 2 (recipient / role)
Example sentence

请你把最新的调查结果告诉王经理。

Qǐng nǐ bǎ zuìxīn de diàochá jiéguǒ gàosu Wáng jīnglǐ.

Please tell Manager Wang the latest survey results.

Polite request using 告诉 (gàosu): Object 1 is the definite survey results, and Object 2 is the recipient, Manager Wang.

A common mistake

× 请把张老师交给这封信。

Qǐng bǎ Zhāng lǎoshī jiāogěi zhè fēng xìn.

Incorrect: Attempts to say 'Please hand this letter over to Teacher Zhang' by reversing the item and the recipient.

Incorrect in this context: placing the recipient in Object 1 and the letter in Object 2 treats Teacher Zhang as the object being handed over to the letter. Replace with the correct order in “请把这封信交给张老师。”.

Corrected example: 请把这封信交给张老师。

Core Pattern and Grammatical Scope

In earlier stages of learning Mandarin, you learn that a 把 (bǎ) sentence moves a direct object before the verb to emphasize how the subject disposes of, affects, or handles that object, and that the verb generally cannot stand bare at the end of the clause. In the HSK 5 grammar outline under Special Sentence Patterns (特殊句型,把字句3), one specific way to complete the verb phrase is by placing a second object directly after the verb.

Subject 把 Object 1 (item / theme) Verb Object 2 (recipient / role)

Object 1 is the entity being handled or interpreted. The phrase after the verb may name a recipient, destination, attributed factor or assigned comparison, depending on the particular construction. Use a verb that licenses this arrangement; simply adding a second noun does not make every verb suitable.

Two Major Semantic Uses

Not every transitive verb can take a second object in a 把 (bǎ) construction. In practice, this pattern is governed by two main groups of verbs: verbs of transfer or communication, and verbs of equivalence, categorization, or transformation.

  • Transfer and Communication: Verbs that convey physical handover or information sharing—such as 告诉 (gàosu, to tell), 交给 (jiāogěi, to hand over to), 送给 (sònggěi, to give as a gift to), 发给 (fāgěi, to send to), or 借给 (jiègěi, to lend to)—place the message or item in the Object 1 slot and the recipient in the Object 2 slot.
  • Equivalence, Categorization, and Metaphor: Verbs or verb-complement compounds that treat, regard, compare, or attribute one thing as another—such as 当作 (dàngzuò, to treat as), 看作 (kànzuò, to regard as), 比作 (bǐzuò, to compare to), or 归结为 (guījié wéi, to sum up or attribute as)—place the original entity in the Object 1 slot and the resulting role, metaphor, or category in the Object 2 slot.

请你把最新的调查结果告诉王经理。

Qǐng nǐ bǎ zuìxīn de diàochá jiéguǒ gàosu Wáng jīnglǐ.

Please tell Manager Wang the latest survey results.

Polite request using 告诉 (gàosu): Object 1 is the definite survey results, and Object 2 is the recipient, Manager Wang.

我已经把那封重要的推荐信交给招生办公室了。

Wǒ yǐjīng bǎ nà fēng zhòngyào de tuījiànxìn jiāogěi zhāoshēng bàngōngshì le.

I have already handed that important recommendation letter over to the admissions office.

Declarative statement showing physical transfer: Object 1 is the specific letter, and Object 2 is the receiving office.

大家一致把这次成功的原因归结为团队的密切合作。

Dàjiā yīzhì bǎ zhè cì chénggōng de yuányīn guījié wéi tuánduì de mìqiè hézuò.

Everyone agreed that the team’s close cooperation was the reason for this success.

归结为 presents an attribution: the first object names the reason being explained and the following phrase states the factor people attribute it to. It reports their interpretation rather than turning an experience into a category.

作家在这部小说里把故乡的河流比作母亲的怀抱。

Zuòjiā zài zhè bù xiǎoshuō lǐ bǎ gùxiāng de héliú bǐzuò mǔqīn de huáibào.

In this novel, the writer compares the river in their hometown to a mother’s embrace.

Metaphorical equivalence using 比作 (bǐzuò): Object 1 is the river, and Object 2 is the image it is compared to.

The first two examples involve a message or document and its recipient. The third attributes the cause of success to cooperation; the fourth creates a metaphor. The following noun phrase therefore has different roles according to the verb, not always a recipient or a literally transformed identity.

Statements, Negation, and Questions

For the basic negative or modal forms, put 不, 没, 别 or a modal such as 应该 before 把. Other adverbials can occur after Object 1 according to scope: 请把这封信亲手交给张老师 places 亲手 directly before 交给. Do not generalize the beginner negation pattern into a ban on every adverb after 把.

你还没把修改后的合同发给客户吗?

Nǐ hái méi bǎ xiūgǎi hòu de hétóng fāgěi kèhù ma?

Haven't you sent the revised contract to the client yet?

Negative yes-no question: the negative adverb 没 (méi) is placed before 把 (bǎ), while Object 2 follows 发给 (fāgěi).

Contrast with Standard Double-Object Sentences

A common question for intermediate and advanced learners is when to use Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object versus Subject + 把 + Object 1 + Verb + Object 2. Both structures can involve a verb like 告诉 (gàosu, to tell), but they package information differently.

他告诉我一个好消息。

Tā gàosu wǒ yī gè hǎo xiāoxi.

He told me a piece of good news.

Contrast example using a standard double-object structure without 把 (bǎ): the direct object is indefinite new information.

The ordinary 告诉 sentence can introduce new information after the recipient. 把 often makes the item being handled identifiable or salient earlier in the clause. Length alone does not make a noun phrase definite. With 比作 or 归结为, do not mechanically use a recipient-first double-object order; constructions with 把 or 将 are natural alternatives.

Avoiding Role Reversal Between Object 1 and Object 2

Because standard double-object sentences place the recipient immediately after the verb, learners sometimes mistakenly move the recipient after 把 (bǎ) and leave the transferred item at the end of the sentence. In the 把 (bǎ) pattern, Object 1 must be the item being transferred or handled, and Object 2 must be the recipient.

请把这封信交给张老师。

Qǐng bǎ zhè fēng xìn jiāogěi Zhāng lǎoshī.

Please hand this letter over to Teacher Zhang.

Correct ordering: Object 1 is the letter being moved, and Object 2 is Teacher Zhang, who receives it.

Always ask yourself which noun is actually being moved, sent, or defined: that noun belongs in the Object 1 position right after 把 (bǎ), while the destination, recipient, or resulting identity stays in the Object 2 position after the verb.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Object 1 and Object 2 in this 把 (bǎ) pattern?

Object 1 (placed right after 把) is the known thing, message, or concept being acted upon or moved. Object 2 (placed after the verb) is the recipient, destination, or the new identity/category assigned to Object 1.

Why use 把 (bǎ) with 告诉 (gàosu) when 告诉 can already take two objects directly?

When the information being told is definite, already known in the context, or has a long modifier (such as 'the latest survey results'), placing it after 把 (bǎ) as Object 1 keeps the post-verbal part balanced and highlights how that specific information is handled.

Where do negation and modal verbs go in 主语 + 把 + 宾语1 + 动词 + 宾语2?

For a straightforward negative or modal sentence, practise Subject + 不 / 没 / 别 / modal + 把 + Object 1 + predicate. This is guidance for those basic forms, not a rule banning all adverbials inside the predicate: 亲手 in 请把信亲手交给他 belongs after the 把 object.
