HSK 5 Grammar: Reverse Progression with 不但不/不但没有……,反而……

不但不/不但没有……,反而…… first denies an expected action or state, then adds a result or reaction contrary to expectation. The second clause strengthens the contrast; it need not be the exact dictionary opposite of the first predicate.

Subject (or Subject 1) 不但不 Expected state, attitude, or action ,反而 Contrary outcome or opposite action
Example sentence

听到我的批评,他不但不生气,反而诚恳地向我道谢。

Tīngdào wǒ de pīpíng, tā búdàn bù shēngqì, fǎn'ér chéngkěn de xiàng wǒ dàoxiè.

Hearing my criticism, he not only did not get angry, but on the contrary thanked me sincerely.

Uses 不但不 before the psychological/emotional predicate 生气; the shared subject 他 stands before 不但不.

A common mistake

× 吃了这种药以后,他的咳嗽不但好转,反而比以前更严重了。

Chīle zhè zhǒng yào yǐhòu, tā de késou búdàn hǎozhuǎn, fǎn'ér bǐ yǐqián gèng yánzhòng le.

Intended: After taking this medicine, his cough not only did not improve, but on the contrary became even more severe than before.

For the intended single outcome, 好转 asserts improvement but the next clause says the cough became worse. Restore 没有好转 to make that intended contrast clear. This is a problem with this example’s intended account, not a rule that 反而 can only follow a negative clause.

Corrected example: 吃了这种药以后,他的咳嗽不但没有好转,反而比以前更严重了。

Core Meaning: Reverse Progression

The HSK 5 outline places 不但不/不但没有……,反而…… under progressive complex sentences (递进复句). Unlike ordinary additive progression, this pattern adds a stronger point that runs against the expectation introduced by the first clause.

The first clause uses 不但不 or 不但没有 to deny an action or state; 反而 then introduces something contrary to the relevant expectation. The outcome can be better or worse than expected. The relation depends on context, not on the predicates forming a literal pair of antonyms.

Choosing Between 不但不 and 不但没有

Choose 不 or 没有 according to the intended negation, not the presence of 反而. 不 commonly negates a state, attitude, habit or intended action; 没有 commonly denies the occurrence or realization of an event or change at a reference time. The same verb can occur with either form in different contexts.

Use 不但不 before adjectives, psychological or emotional verbs, modal verbs (such as 愿意, 敢, or 会), and habitual or intentional actions. Here, the first clause describes an attitude, state, or willingness that fails to hold true.

Subject (or Subject 1) 不但不 Expected state, attitude, or action ,反而 Contrary outcome or opposite action

面对这么复杂的任务,她不但不退缩,反而主动要求负责最难的部分。

Miànduì zhème fùzá de rènwu, tā búdàn bú tuìsuō, fǎn'ér zhǔdòng yāoqiú fùzé zuì nán de bùfen.

Facing such a complicated task, she not only did not back down, but instead volunteered to take charge of the hardest part.

Uses 不但不 to negate an attitude or intentional reaction (退缩) in a present/general context.

Use 不但没有, often 不但没, when an expected event or change has not occurred at the relevant reference time. That time is often in the past, but the construction itself does not set a past tense.

Subject (or Subject 1) 不但没有 Expected event or change of state ,反而 Contrary outcome or opposite action

吃了这种药以后,他的咳嗽不但没有好转,反而比以前更严重了。

Chīle zhè zhǒng yào yǐhòu, tā de késou búdàn méiyǒu hǎozhuǎn, fǎn'ér bǐ yǐqián gèng yánzhòng le.

After taking this medicine, his cough not only did not improve, but on the contrary became even more severe than before.

Uses 不但没有 because getting better (好转) was an expected change of state that failed to occur.

到了傍晚,风不但没有停,反而越刮越大了。

Dàole bàngwǎn, fēng búdàn méiyǒu tíng, fǎn'ér yuè guā yuè dà le.

By evening, the wind had not died down; instead, it was blowing harder and harder.

没有停 says the expected stopping had not occurred by the reference time. 越刮越大 adds the unexpected strengthening of the same wind.

Sentence Formation and Word Order

The following patterns give useful neutral word orders. Subject placement also depends on topic continuity and contrastive focus; identifying 反而 as an adverb does not by itself forbid it from preceding a whole subject–predicate clause.

  • Same subject: a common neutral order is Subject + 不但不/不但没有…,反而…. The subject is usually omitted in the second clause when its reference is clear; repetition may serve emphasis or clarity.
  • Different subjects: placing 不但 before Subject 1 often clearly marks the connection between the two clauses. Use the displayed two-subject pattern as a reliable starting model.
  • In the second clause, Subject 2 + 反而 + Predicate is a useful neutral order. 反而 + Subject 2 + Predicate is also possible when the whole following situation is contrasted. Judge the intended focus rather than marking every pre-subject 反而 as wrong.
  • Statement vs. rhetorical use: This pattern is primarily used in declarative statements to report facts or assessments, though the second clause can occasionally take a rhetorical question to emphasize how absurd the opposite outcome is.
不但 Subject (or Subject 1) 不/没有 Expected event or change of state , Subject 2 反而 Contrary outcome or opposite action

采用新方案后,不但工作效率没有提高,生产成本反而增加了不少。

Cǎiyòng xīn fāng'àn hòu, búdàn gōngzuò xiàolǜ méiyǒu tígāo, shēngchǎn chéngběn fǎn'ér zēngjiāle bùshǎo.

After adopting the new plan, not only did work efficiency not improve, but production costs increased considerably instead.

Two different subjects: 不但 precedes the first subject (工作效率), while the second subject (生产成本) precedes the adverb 反而.

Useful Contrasts and Common Learner Errors

To use 不但不/不但没有……,反而…… accurately, distinguish it from two related patterns: 不但……,而且…… (not only... but also...) and 虽然……,但是…… (although... but...).

  • 不但…而且… adds a stronger related point, whereas the target 不但不/没有…反而… adds a counter-expectation after a denial. The predicates need not be dictionary opposites.
  • 但是 marks general contrast or concession. 反而 more specifically highlights a result contrary to expectation. Outside this target pattern, 反而 can follow an affirmative clause: 花了很多钱,效果反而更差了.

Check that both clauses describe a coherent contrast. In the medicine error below, improvement and worsening are asserted of the same intended result without explanation. For subject placement, compare the two valid cost examples and notice how the focus can shift.

采用新方案后,不但工作效率没有提高,反而生产成本增加了不少。

Cǎiyòng xīn fāng'àn hòu, búdàn gōngzuò xiàolǜ méiyǒu tígāo, fǎn'ér shēngchǎn chéngběn zēngjiāle bùshǎo.

After the new plan was adopted, work efficiency did not improve; instead, production costs rose considerably.

This order can contrast the whole second clause, 生产成本增加了不少. 生产成本反而增加了不少 is another natural order with the subject before 反而. Prefer the latter as a simple starting model, without treating the former as a grammatical error.

Frequently asked questions

Can 不但没有 be shortened to 不但没?

Yes. Before a verb or adjective phrase, 没有 in 不但没有 is very frequently shortened to 没 (不但没……,反而……) in both spoken and written Mandarin without changing the grammatical meaning.

Can 反而 be combined with 还 or 更 in the second clause?

Yes. Writers often add 更 (even more) before adjectives or 还 (still/even) before verbs in the second clause—such as 反而更严重了—to highlight the degree of the unexpected reversal.

Are there other words that work like 不但 in this pattern?

In wider reading you may see 不仅 or 非但 used in similar reverse-progression sentences, as well as neighboring syllabus patterns, but for this specific outline point you should master the exact pairing 不但不/不但没有……,反而…….
