HSK 5 Causal Complex Sentences: ……,因而…… (yīn'ér)

因而 means “therefore/as a result” and links a stated reason or premise to the speaker’s consequence or conclusion. It is mainly formal or written. The connector itself does not establish that the premise or causal claim is objectively true.

cause clause ,因而 result clause
Example sentence

这家工厂引进了先进的自动化设备,因而生产效率提高了一倍。

Zhè jiā gōngchǎng yǐnjìn le xiānjìn de zìdònghuà shèbèi, yīn'ér shēngchǎn xiàolǜ tígāo le yí bèi.

This factory introduced advanced automation equipment, and as a result, production efficiency doubled.

Correct: The first clause states an objective action, and 因而 introduces the resulting clause with its own subject (生产效率).

A common mistake

× 因而最近原材料价格上涨,产品成本也随之增加了。

Yīn'ér zuìjìn yuáncáiliào jiàgé shàngzhǎng, chǎnpǐn chéngběn yě suízhī zēngjiā le.

Intended: Because raw material prices rose recently, product costs also increased accordingly.

For the stated intended meaning, place 因而 before the resulting increase in product costs: 最近原材料价格上涨,因而产品成本也随之增加了. If earlier context already supplies another cause, sentence-initial 因而 may instead refer back to that context.

Corrected example: 最近原材料价格上涨,因而产品成本也随之增加了。

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

In the HSK 5 grammar syllabus under sentence types and complex sentences, the pattern ……,因而…… (yīn'ér) is classified as a causal complex sentence (因果复句).

因而 introduces a consequence or conclusion from an earlier reason, observation or assumed premise. It is common in reports, analytical prose and formal speech. A statement can be hypothetical or open to disagreement; using 因而 does not turn it into a proven fact.

Sentence Structure and Formation

The standard pattern places the cause in the first clause, followed by a comma, and then 因而 at the beginning of the result clause. It is primarily used in declarative statements to explain how an outcome arose or why a conclusion holds true, rather than in direct questions.

cause clause ,因而 result clause

When the result has a different subject, it commonly follows 因而. When the subject is shared and clear, it can be omitted in the result clause; retaining it for clarity or emphasis is also possible. These are useful default patterns rather than an instruction to delete every repeated subject.

他长期在基层工作,因而非常了解当地居民的实际困难。

Tā chángqī zài jīcéng gōngzuò, yīn'ér fēicháng liǎojiě dāngdì jūmín de shíjì kùnnan.

He has worked at the grassroots level for a long time, and therefore understands the practical difficulties of local residents very well.

Correct: Both clauses share the subject 他, which is omitted after 因而 in the second clause.

To highlight the causal relationship explicitly in formal writing, the first clause often begins with 由于 (yóuyú, due to / because of). Pairing 由于 in the cause clause with 因而 in the result clause is a natural and well-established written pattern.

由于 cause clause ,因而 result clause

由于这一带森林覆盖率高,因而夏季的气候比市区凉爽得多。

Yóuyú zhè yí dài sēnlín fùgàilǜ gāo, yīn'ér xiàjì de qìhòu bǐ shìqū liángshuǎng de duō.

Because the forest coverage rate in this area is high, the summer climate is consequently much cooler than in the urban district.

Correct: 由于 introduces the cause in the first clause, pairing naturally with 因而 in the formal result clause.

Pragmatic Contexts: Objective Outcomes vs. Logical Conclusions

Understanding when to choose ……,因而…… depends on both register and the nature of the link between the two clauses. In practice, it serves two closely related functions:

  • Reporting objective cause and effect: The first clause describes an action, policy, or natural condition, and the second clause reports the measurable or observable result.
  • Stating an analytical conclusion: The first clause presents evidence or a factual observation, and the second clause states the judgment or assessment that follows from that fact.

这项调查的样本数量太少,因而得出的结论缺乏足够的说服力。

Zhè xiàng diàochá de yàngběn shùliàng tài shǎo, yīn'ér déchū de jiélùn quēfá zúgòu de shuōfúlì.

The sample size of this survey is too small, and therefore the conclusion reached lacks sufficient persuasiveness.

Correct: 因而 links an observed limitation in the first clause to an analytical conclusion in the second clause.

Useful Contrasts: 因而 vs. 所以 and 因此

At HSK 5, learners already know several words that translate as "therefore" or "so." Distinguishing 因而 (yīn'ér) from 所以 (suǒyǐ) and 因此 (yīncǐ) helps you select the right connector for the context and avoid structural habits that do not transfer.

  • 所以 works in both everyday and formal language and commonly pairs with 因为. 因而 sounds more written or formal. It can follow a cause introduced by 由于 or 因为; the choice depends on the full sentence, not a ban on 因为……因而…….
  • 因此 and 因而 overlap in meaning. 因此 often works as a separate transition with a pause, while 因而 commonly connects directly to the result clause. Punctuation is a writing choice influenced by rhythm; a comma alone is not a reliable test of their grammar or meaning.
  • In this lesson’s basic two-clause pattern, give the reason first and use 因而 before the result. 因而 can also begin a new sentence when earlier discourse supplies its premise. Do not confuse that with using it to mean 因为.

Common Learner Pitfalls

Because 因而 begins with the character 因 (yīn, cause/because), learners sometimes confuse it with 因为 (yīnwèi, because) or 由于 (yóuyú, due to) and place it at the beginning of the cause clause. Remember that 因而 means "because of this / therefore" and can only introduce the result clause.

× 因而最近原材料价格上涨,产品成本也随之增加了。

Yīn'ér zuìjìn yuáncáiliào jiàgé shàngzhǎng, chǎnpǐn chéngběn yě suízhī zēngjiā le.

Intended: Because raw material prices rose recently, product costs also increased accordingly.

For the stated intended meaning, place 因而 before the resulting increase in product costs: 最近原材料价格上涨,因而产品成本也随之增加了. If earlier context already supplies another cause, sentence-initial 因而 may instead refer back to that context.

Corrected example: 最近原材料价格上涨,因而产品成本也随之增加了。

最近原材料价格上涨,因而产品成本也随之增加了。

Zuìjìn yuáncáiliào jiàgé shàngzhǎng, yīn'ér chǎnpǐn chéngběn yě suízhī zēngjiā le.

Raw material prices rose recently, and consequently product costs also increased accordingly.

Correct: The cause appears in the first clause, and 因而 is placed at the start of the second clause to introduce the consequence.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a comma immediately after 因而?

In the basic examples, connect 因而 directly to the result clause and put the clause boundary before it. A writer may add a pause for a particular rhythm or structure; punctuation alone does not define the causal relationship.

Does ……,因而…… work the same way as deductive markers that mean 'it is evident that'?

No. While ……,因而…… can introduce a logical conclusion, its primary role is to show that fact A caused outcome B or led to assessment B. Other causal patterns in the syllabus focus specifically on deducing a hidden truth from visible evidence, whereas 因而 focuses on direct cause-and-effect progression.

Is it wrong to use 因而 in spoken Chinese?

It is not ungrammatical, but it sounds noticeably formal. It is appropriate in spoken contexts such as presentations, interviews, debates, or news broadcasts, whereas 所以 is much more natural in everyday conversation.
