HSK 4 Grammar: The 把 Sentence with an Adverbial Before the Verb (主语+把+宾语+状语+动词)
The HSK 4 pattern 主语+把+宾语+状语+动词 places an adverbial between the object and verb. It can describe how the object is handled without requiring a complement after the verb, for example 把话慢慢说 or 把文件仔细检查.

请你把这份文件仔细检查。
The manner adverbial 仔细 (carefully) precedes the disyllabic verb 检查 (inspect), allowing the sentence to be complete without a post-verbal element.
× 你把那封信没仔细看。
Incorrect. The negation word 没 cannot be placed in the adverbial slot after the object; it must precede 把. Replace with Example 8.
Corrected example: 你没把那封信仔细看。

What This Pattern Does
In the HSK 4 outline under Special Sentence Types (特殊句型) and the second group of 把 sentences (“把”字句2), sub-pattern (4) specifies the structure Subject + 把 + Object + Adverbial + Verb (主语+把+宾语+状语+动词).
A 把 predicate often needs support beyond an isolated bare verb. That support does not always have to follow the verb: a meaningful adverbial can supply it, as in 把话慢慢说. Two-syllable verbs such as 检查 are useful examples, but word length is not itself the licensing rule.
请你把这份文件仔细检查。
The manner adverbial 仔细 (carefully) precedes the disyllabic verb 检查 (inspect), allowing the sentence to be complete without a post-verbal element.
Choosing the Adverbial and the Verb
Not every combination of adverb and verb works in a bare-verb ending. Because the sentence has no element after the verb, the pre-verbal adverbial and the verb itself must provide both semantic completeness and rhythmic balance.
- The Object (宾语): As in standard 把 sentences, the object is typically known, definite, or specific to the speaker and listener (such as 'this document' or 'tomorrow's activity').
- The Adverbial (状语): This slot is filled by a manner adverb, a two-syllable adjective acting adverbially (sometimes with 地), or a short prepositional phrase showing method or standard—for example, 仔细 (carefully), 重新 (anew), 互相 (mutually), 简单 (briefly/simply), or 按顺序 (in order).
- Choose a transitive action verb that fits the object and instruction, such as 检查, 安排 or 总结. These are useful two-syllable examples, not an exhaustive or exclusive list.
会议之前,大家把各自的意见互相交流。
The adverb 互相 (mutually) occupies the adverbial slot before the two-syllable verb 交流 (exchange).
我们要把明天的活动重新安排。
要 comes before 把, while 重新 describes the arrangement after the object. This presents a plan, not a claim that rearrangement is already complete. A completed report could say 我们已经把明天的活动重新安排好了.
Situational Use: Statements, Instructions, and Questions
This order is useful in instructions and procedural descriptions because it keeps the object and the way of handling it close together. Some examples have a balanced rhythm, but the sentence does not need a fixed four-syllable ending.
因为时间不够,他们只好把调查报告简单总结。
简单 (briefly/simply) describes the manner of 总结 (summarize) right before the verb.
请把桌上的资料按顺序排列。
A short prepositional phrase like 按顺序 (according to order) can also fill the adverbial slot before a two-syllable verb like 排列 (arrange in order).
In imperative sentences (requests or instructions), the subject (你 or 你们) is frequently omitted or preceded by 请. In yes-no questions about whether an action has been carried out in a specific manner, sentence-final particles like 了吗 can be added at the end of the clause.
你把合同条款认真阅读了吗?
Turns the pattern into a yes-no question about whether the object was handled in the specified manner (认真, conscientiously/carefully).
Crucial Contrast: Where Do Different Adverbials Go?
状语 is a broad category of adverbial function. This lesson focuses on modifiers close to the action, especially manner and method. It is not an exhaustive list of everything that can appear between a 把 object and its verb.
For ordinary negation of the whole action, put 不, 没 or 别 before 把. Modals such as 要 and 应该 also normally precede it. Within the predicate, many adverbials are possible, including manner, repetition or order: 把文件仔细检查, 把合同再看一遍. Scope and the intended meaning matter, not a ban on every non-manner adverb after the object.
× 你把那封信没仔细看。
Incorrect. The negation word 没 cannot be placed in the adverbial slot after the object; it must precede 把. Replace with Example 8.
Corrected example: 你没把那封信仔细看。
你没把那封信仔细看。
Correct replacement for Example 7: 没 precedes 把, while the manner adverbial 仔细 remains between the object and the verb.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't the verb in this pattern need anything after it?
An adverbial can help express how the object is handled, so a following complement is not the only way to support the predicate. Naturalness depends on the verb, meaning and context. Compare instructions such as 把话慢慢说 and 把文件仔细检查; syllable count alone does not decide whether a sentence works.
Can I use the adverbial particle 地 after the manner word in this pattern?
Yes. With two-syllable descriptive adjectives like 仔细, 认真, or 简单, the particle 地 is optional before a two-syllable verb in this construction. In concise formal or instructional sentences, speakers and writers often omit 地 to maintain a clean four-syllable rhythm.
Why does 没 or 不 go before 把 instead of right before the verb?
When denying the whole handling event in this basic pattern, place 没 or 不 before 把. Manner and other action-related adverbials may follow the object. Keep the intended scope clear rather than treating this as a rule that only manner words can ever appear there.
