Meaning: two sides of one topic
一方面……,另一方面…… means “on the one hand…, on the other hand…”. It introduces two aspects, reasons, effects, advantages, disadvantages, or considerations related to the same subject. The speaker presents them as parallel parts of an account, often to give a balanced view or explain a trade-off. The pair does not by itself say that the two sides are equally important, opposite, or exhaustive.
The HSK 4 outline classifies this as coordination. A full sentence may have one shared subject before the pair, as in the course example, or different subjects in the two aspects, as in the rent-and-commute example. What connects them is the topic being considered.
Formation and sentence shape
A useful frame is 一方面 + first aspect, 另一方面 + second aspect. The material after each marker may be a verb phrase, an adjective phrase, or a fuller clause. Keep the two parts grammatically comparable when possible: two benefits, two consequences, or two complete observations are easy to follow. The subject may be stated once before the pair if it clearly applies to both clauses, or repeated when the second clause needs its own subject.
In writing, a comma commonly separates the two parts. Each side may include 也 or another suitable word to make the relationship flow, but neither is required by the pattern. Choose words that express the intended relation; the pair itself does not mean “and also” in every context.
Examples in context
Notice how the two clauses in each example address the same topic while adding distinct information. The second aspect may be favorable, unfavorable, or simply another relevant consideration.

When it fits, and a useful contrast
This pattern suits explanations, evaluations, and discussions where the reader needs to consider two dimensions together. It can introduce a benefit alongside a cost, or two different effects of one choice. It is also natural in spoken discussion when you want to make your reasoning easy to follow.
Do not use the pair merely to number steps in time. For a process such as completing one task and then moving to the next, a sequence expression such as 首先……,然后…… is a better fit. Likewise, a list of separate supporting points may call for a listing expression. The key question is whether the clauses are two aspects of one topic, rather than successive stages or items in a list.
The pattern can appear in a question if the speaker is asking someone to weigh two aspects, but the pair does not itself make a sentence a question. Question meaning comes from the full sentence and its context. In this lesson, the examples are statements that explain or evaluate a situation.
A quick way to build your own sentence
- Name one topic or decision that both clauses will discuss.
- Choose the first aspect and express it as a clear phrase or clause after 一方面.
- Add a genuinely related second aspect after 另一方面; check that it adds information rather than repeating the first side.
- Read the pair together. If it sounds like a timeline or unrelated list, choose a different sentence pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Do the two aspects have to be equally important?
No. The pair presents two relevant sides, but it does not promise that they have equal weight or that they cover every possible consideration.
Must I repeat the subject after 另一方面?
No. If one subject clearly applies to both clauses, it can be stated once. Repeat or change the subject when that makes the second aspect clearer.
Can the second aspect be negative?
Yes. The pattern can present a drawback, limitation, or other less favorable consideration alongside a benefit. The pair itself does not prescribe a positive or negative judgment.
